As a city with millenia of history, Petra is loaded with relics for various cultures, though this is not necessarily well-known to those who know little about Petra. This applies to this amazing Byzantine Church, which is still under excavation. It always amazes me to see what has been unearth in Petra; when I visited in November 2019, one half of the church showed the mosiac tile floors that had been restore, and the other side had not been restored. It really put things in context...and reminded me of Petra's vast and diverse history well beyond its original architects.

The old Byzantine church has remains of some of the pillars and colonades as well as some of the capitols that had been on them. There are some mosaic floors original to Petra there for excellent viewing. A nice view from there across the way gives you a beautiful view down the colonaded street and the city gates.

This church has Byzantine mosaics that are still visible. Amazing to see how the structure was reappropriated as a church.

The site is still much work in progress but a part can already be visited. The former interior of the church shows major mosaics on both sides of the church interior. Difficult to take photos.

The mosaics on the floor of the Byzantine Church in Petra are a must see. They are so vibrant still after all this time and are remarkably well preserved.
The chuch is located under an awning- style roof up the hill from the colonnaded street. Access is by a few small drainage bridges that span the Wadi followed by a short winding path uphill.
Its hard to get a good look at the mosaics as the church has a pretty heavy footfall. Fantastic views from up there though of the Great Temole, the Outer Siq, the Wadi and the Royal Tombs.
