Petra is one of the 7 wonders for a reason. It is spectacular. I did not realize ahead of time, just how enormous an area it is, and would have spent a few days here in order to fully enjoy it. There is a lot of walking - so be sure to be prepared for that. We took the horses which are "free" with an entrance ticket into Petra, but they will expect a gracious tip at the end of the ride (we gave them about 5USD per horse). Be forewarned that there are other people with donkeys and horses who offer to give you rides vs. walking - if you don't want to ride, be upfront and tell them so directly and they will move on.
The actual ruins in Petra are spectacular - we hired a guide at the ticket office who was very knowledgable and we felt that had we went on our own, we would have missed out on a lot. Overall it was an excellent experience. Our kids even enjoyed the experience, and it was a LONG day!

Wonderful to see and great hike. Please be prepared for a lot of begging and pushy locals trying to get to to buy things or ride camel/horse/donkeys. The economy is struggling right now and tourism is low....just be polite....very safe there.

Been to Petra twice. The wow effect was just as impactful the second time around.Your bucket list must include this. Absolutely breathtaking!
You've not been to Jordan if you've not been to Petra. Just be careful of those who offer the horse, camel and donkey rides. They ask for more money at the end of the trip.

No matter how many pictures you see of Petra, nothing quite compares you for the view of the Treasury as you walk out of the Siq, or the way the sun looks like it set the Monastery on fire as it sets.

Hhhm where to start. I am not sure if I expected it to be like in the Indiana Jones movie, but it was definitely not! When you initially enter Petra there is no WOW factor you will do a lot of walking past rocks that may have or may not have been something historical. The ground is rocky and uneven so if you have trouble walking or traversing these kinds of terrains I would recommend using a horse carriage to get to the main parts. One of the most beautiful parts for me was when we entered the rose colored sandstone canyon. It kind of makes you feel like you’re in something magical. Pace yourself there is a lot of walking ahead of you. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing as well as shoes. There are some cafes and shops along the way but I would recommend you bring your own water as their prices are higher due to there not being any other option once you enter the site. There will be a lot of locals around you trying to sell you stuff or get you to ride their camel or donkey for a price. If you don't feel like bothering with them don't look their way or say anything to them and they will leave you alone. Go there as early as possible in the day to make it a more pleasant trip as once the sun is up the temperatures soar. I took a camel ride back up and it was definitely an experience. Just make sure to haggle with the price. All in all Petra was a lovely journey just come prepared for non-paved terrain and some heat and it can be an enjoyable experience.
