in general you can visit Petra in one day tour but if you want to really enjoy and explore every thing you need three days as you need at least one complete day to finish this amazing monastery visit

When visiting Petra, it's worth the extra effort to visit the Monastery as long as you're not afraid of a little exercise. It's about 800 steps up and the footing is generally pretty good as long as you have decent walking shoes. The scenery on the hike itself is beautiful. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a facade similar to that of the Treasury in an even more spectacular setting with far fewer people around. Climbing just a bit higher offers up some amazing views. There are plenty of photo opportunities on the hike and around the Monastery. This was one of the highlights of our visit to Petra.

On the walk up, there are many bedouin merchants selling gifts and souvenirs. They're persistent, but pleasant, and they seem to be able to tell the tourists' nationality from far away, switching their sales pitch effortlessly from English to Italian to German! There are also folks offering rides up and down on donkeys, but our excellent guide advised that this was dangerous and should be avoided.

The Monastery at Petra is just as amazing as every other part of Petra. With it's amazing carvings and grand features it's a must see.

If you're are staying in Egypt then the trip here is so worth it and really shouldn't be missed.

Our group was made up of people 50 and older and this was a challenging hike. Some of us had to grab a donkey mid way up but it seems you can always find one. The vendors along the way are pleasant and helpful. We stopped in for a cup of tea.
The great thing about the Monastery is that it is not too crowded. You can get that picture with just you standing in front of the Monastery

I travelled her in Sept 1998.... Yes a very long time ago.... A lot has changed but the magnificent views have not .... Lovely historic and picturesque country, would love to go again, as now reading up on the history of the country etc... Makes a big difference even though we had a lively tour guide.

Please make sure you have suitable footware it is a long treck thought the soft sandy hills! Mounts rocks village....
