I found the climb to the Monastery easier than expected and what a breath taking view from the top. Combined with walking around one of the most beautiful buildings in Petra (in my view) it made the scramble to the top more than worth while. There is a café at the top and plenty of places to sit enjoying your lunch or just some snack.
if you are visiting Petra - don't miss out of this fabulous experience

The Monastery rivals the Treasury in size and magnificence. It is hard to comprehend that a building of this size could be carved directly out of the mountain and with such precision and abundance of detail. The walk up and down is a challenge with some 800 steps of varying sizes but well worth it.

It's so far and so high, it's better to go there in a donkey or take it easy and go up on the upstairs for more than tow hours. If you go to Petra you must visit it.

Make the extra effort and go all the way to the monastery, there is less people and the views of the valleys are amazing.

Definitely worth taking a mule ride up. It will not take you all the way but will allow your feet to rest for a moment and break the back of the climb. Walking down is fine though slippery if there has been rain. Definitely worth the visit and there is a delightful café to sit at while admiring the monastery. I recommend their fresh lemon and mint drink but remember there are no toilet facilities up here.
Walk to the end and admire the views down the valleys.
Worth the climb, however you do it!
