We were advised by the park guide that this was a strenuous climb (800 steps) and that you shouldn't take a donkey up as this was quite dangerous.

We set off in the nearly morning (8am) to avoid the heat of hthe day - highly recommended in June! While you definitely need to be fit to make this climb it is not as arduous as they make out, especially if you take your time.

Takes 1hr to climb up, 30-40 min return. Gift shop and drinks at the top. You can easily spend another hour walking around the top.

IMO you cold take a donkey up the stairs as, unlike the Place of High Sacrifice which is quite steep, most of e route has a gentle slope. So if you're unfit take a donkey for 5JOD. I'd walk down though!

On the way up and down there are plenty of places to buy souvenirs and the traders are not too pushy and are very friendly.

Several hundred steps up a hillside will bring you to the most awesome tomb of all - the so-called Monastery. It did become a monastery in the Byzantine period, long after the city's height of power. Be warned, if you are not in good health - don't attempt the walk. It's longer than you'll expect and can be pretty tough in the heat. There is an option to go by mule - that could be pricey and frankly I'd avoid. Either walk it or don't. Also, at the top, you can get a breath taking view of a canyon that forms part of the great geological rift that cuts through Africa.

The Monastery looks like the Treasury but requires you to walk uphill up 800 steps to get to it, it is definately worth seeing, but would recommend getting a donkey uphill (5JD) and then walking back down.

The building is impressive. Add to this the sense of achievement in climbing up there, and the fact of escaping some of the day trippers and you can see why you shouldn't miss this.

Don't take the donkey ride. You can walk. Take lots of stops. Haggle. People want your money, unless you are strongwilled, be prepared to spend some. At least buy waters along the way and it is worth it to TALK to the people. Very friendly and you can learn much from listening to them, stop and have tea. Consider it part of the experience. The view is a must-do. Put it on your bucketlist. PS friends took the donkey ride and liked it.
