If you don't mind the workout, this is a good hike up, or you can take the scary donkey ride up and/or down. No matter what, this is worth seeing. It is another facade like the Treasury, and very impressive.

It’s a fair trek (800 odd steps apparently) to reach the Monastery (Al Dayr) but worthwhile. Views from there are great but it is the monastery that makes it all worthwhile. The room was ‘guarded’ by a soldier when I was there – he hauled me in for a closer look and then took me off to see further nearby pictographs.

We trekked to the top in Petra to see the Monastery and we were not disappointed. It is so huge ,it looks like something out of a film set. Took pictures of my daughter in the doorway and she looks tiny despite being a very tall girl.Loved the Monastery.

Loved it! It is difficult to decide which is more rewarding, the climb or the actual sight of the Monastery. Please go past the Monastery and go see the ' End of the World' and the view from the vantage point as well. A must do is to have a glass of fresh promegranate juice as well. The cafe at the top has the most comfortable benches - maybe after the mammoth climb, it just felt so good to sit down. Never counted the steps to the top, I was so engrosed in the view!

Take the extra time and effort needed to climb to the Monastery. The construction itself is not that different from the Treasury, but the location is stunning. There is also a lovely café there to get some tea and sit facing the Monastery. Really worth it.
