“Interesting stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

My room was nice with the beautiful Petra view including Aaron's tomb. Wish I could have tried the pool, but time was short and it was difficult to access from my room. Looked like a nice setting.

Service was good and food was among the better options of the dozens of buffets during our trip. Wifi in the lobby worked fairly well; did need help accessing it a couple times, so there are hiccups.

Awful wine and mediocre bar, but that seems standard.

I don't recommend the spa experience. They offered our group half price, which was encouraging. But the service I chose wasn't available and I didn't learn this until it was starting. (Was supposed to be "four hands" - a man and a woman. And the price remained the same for the "two hands." So much for half price.)

And I had a male therapist, which I have never had a problem with anywhere in the world until this. It was somewhat inappropriate, and I wasn't the only one who felt that way, without offering too much detail. I'm also pretty sure he wasn't professionally trained.

I strongly suggest skipping the spa. I would have reported it but had the distinct impression management would have ignored it, so why go through something that upsetting? This seems to right place to extend that caveat.

But otherwise, it was a pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Definitely book a petra-view room

We chose the Marriott based on other Tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed!

The hotel is away from the hubbub of the local town of Wadi Musa, bring located on a hilltop overlooking Petra. As other reviewers have already stated, it really does have a wow factor view. Petra itself is easily walkable but a hilly trek, so would recommend using the hotel shuttle bus that runs a few times daily. We had hired a car so we used that, parking at the visitors centre is cheap and plentiful.

We were offered a soft drink whilst we were checking in and immediately felt that the service was both efficient and friendly. Even the obligatory passing through security was easy and a few packets of snacks and drinks at the bottom of a bag were thankfully ignored. We were thrilled when one of our interconnecting rooms turned out to be a junior suite and both had that famous stunning view!
Our rate included breakfast, buffet style in the main restaurant overlooking the pool and that view! Service was great, we all felt like we were treated as returning friends, however the food choice was not amazing neither was the quality. As it turned out our experience of hotel food in the whole of Jordan was the same if not worse.
We had a dinner at the Italian restaurant and all had very average pizzas. After a long day it was a little disappointing. The meal cost JOD60 for 4 which was based on one glass of wine and 3 soft drinks, no dessert. We didn't think this was a bad price (considering the hotel is a little isolated) it just wasn't great quality. My husband ordered a veggie pizza that had about 3 toppings missing - no explanation or anything. The thing is the Jordanian service was so lovely we couldn't be bothered to complain!
We had a drink afterwards at the adjoining bar, this was 2 for 1 between certain times and was served with a few nibbles. The bar is small but has a nice calm atmosphere which made it relaxing.
Wifi - I struggled for whatever reason to log in to the hotel wifi (free but lobby only) but the hotel desk got me sorted straight away. It seemed to be reliable but wifi in the room would have put icing on the cake!
Check out was fast and friendly. We will likely not be back to Jordan as we have ticked the box now but would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of coming to Petra.

Room Tip: We had an upgrade to a junior suite with a mountain view from a rate with a view of the car park and...

The hotel has an excellent location perched on a hill overlooking Petra itself. If you can get a room facing Petra, you will be rewarded with an excellent view at sunrise over Petra. This view is quite spectacular.

The rooms are pretty basic and for the price, I expected a lot better (shower area drainage was poor and the rooms are not big). However the let down was the service we received on checking in and the SINGLE small bottle of water in the room (to be fair, we did ask for more and they did send another bottle up).

Breakfast at the restaurant was pretty basic but fortunately the staff there provided good service. Dinner again was so-so and I would suggest the hotel improve the quality of their food given that it is a Marriott.

Unfortunately given the type of greeting we received on check-in, it really colored our whole experience and made us feel unwelcome. Whilst we had previously arranged for a night tour to Petra and a car to Aqaba, I also called the hotel twice before canceling these arrangements and were told that it is not a problem. But upon checking in, I was "told off" by the person who check us in that we should've given them 24 hours notice etc and he promptly did not smile etc. What the heck ! I told him that I had called many hours ago and had called two times (just to make sure) and each time was told it was not going to be a problem to cancel and if it was a problem then I would have not have made my own arrangements (which included other trips to Aqaba, Amman, Jerash etc).

Dear Benny L,

We wish to truly thank you for taking the time to share your comments the concerns of your recent stay at Petra Marriott in Trip Advisor.

We are very sorry to hear that at this occasion, we have fell short of meeting your expectations in terms of the quality of food, the room type, and the shower drain.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the attitude of the Front Desk associate, and the unwelcoming treatment at check in, while we assure you that this is an isolated incident that should not have happened at all, and should not reflect on the geniune care and hospitality of the people of Petra.

This issue in addition to your valuable feedback points had been shared and will be appropriately addressed and taken into consideration.

We are glad to hear that you have enjoyed the breathtaking views of the Petra Marriott, due to its unique location, and the attentive services at breakfast.

We are grateful for giving us the opportunity to identify such occasional shortfalls in our services, and to ensure they do not happen again.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Petra in the near future, and to being of service again.

Yours sincerely,

Zovinar Mananian (Ms)

I picked this hotel because of the view and we hired a driver so I didn't mind the location. Its way up on the mountain. The room is nice but it does not have a very good view.

Food is good, we got half board and both breakfast and dinner are very good.

The swimming pool was freezing...I don't think they heat the pool there.

All in all it pretty good I guess I can give it a 4 as not everyroom has the view that I expect. And if you do not have your own transportation you should not pick this hotel.

Dear WVantraveller,

Many thanks for taking the time to share your review in Trip Advisor about your recent stay at Petra Marriort Hotel.

We are very glad to hear that you have enjoyed your stay with us, and that our breakfast and dinner buffets were to your entire satisfaction.

We are sorry to hear that the pool at this occasion was not warm enough, as despite the weather changes, we do arrange to heat the outdoor pool daily, until it is fully closed at end of season during November.

We realize that our hotel is about 10-minute drive from the Site of Petra, and that by providing a shuttle service program, we can minimize the inconvenience to a great extent.

But in the own words of our valuable guests, the unique location of the Petra Marriott and the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, combined with the most magical sunsets, well compensate for the off-site location.

We hope your travel plans will bring you back to this area, and that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back.

Yours sincerely,

Zovinar Mananian (Ms)

We stayed two nights at this hotel and from the moment we were greeted at the front counter we were made to feel very welcome. The hotel has been maintained to a very good standard and I would certainly recommend it for travellers looking for an upper end property to stay. They certainly went the extra mile. The duty manager noticed that it was my husband's birthday when recording our passport details and offered to arrange for a surprise birthday cake and for happy birthday to be sung to him. Very touching and unexpected. Breakfast was delicious, with a good range and we ate with a view looking past the pool to the hills surrounding Petra - stunning! I would certainly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road as the rooms on the other side of the hotel have views to the hill...

If visiting Petra then consider The Petra Marriott Hotel. It is a small hotel overlooking the mountains about five minutes drive from the main Petra site. If you do not have your own transport then there is a shuttle bus that you can book.
It's a lovely intimate hotel with light airy rooms - book a premium room with a mountain view and you will not be disappointed.
The service is excellent and everyone is very attentive. We had a couple of issues on our first night here but they were dealt with efficiently and the remainder of our stay was wonderful.
If returning to Petra then I would most certainly return.
