“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2009

The hotel is a short walk to Petra, runs a restaurant in the grounds of Petra and as a Night Bar in the area of the Petra Visitors Centre and these are the main advantages.
The hotel is quite dated and the rooms are small and "overfurnished" with nothing newer than 20 years old but it isn't falling apart not really worth the five stars.
We were there for 2 nights with meals included in the package, the breakfast was very good, with a lot of healthy choices and good variety and also the dinner. The location advantage is everything here.

We arrived at the Crowne Plaza very early in the morning and as they were very quiet we were are able to lcheck in straight away. We left our luggage and walked the 100m to the Petra Visitors Centre and spent the rest of that day in Petra. The hotel runs a restaurant in the grounds of Petra and we charged our lunch to the room.

On our return to the hotel we took a dip in the heated pool. We then went back to the room for a shower. Whilst I was still in the shower, my husband left the bathroom only to find a staff member in our room!! Delivering a fruit basket!. He was quickly asked to leave the room. Clearly he had knocked on the room door and as we hadn't heard him, he had entered the room thinking we weren't in but I can't believe he didn't hear the shower going and us talking. He had to pass the bathroom door to get into the room. It was only luck that my husband had a towel round him and that it wasn't me who had left the bathroom first!!

Staffing was a strange problem. We had 4 staff members come to our hotel room door within 20 mins - fruit basket man, turn down service man (at 7pm??!!), want anything for the room man, man with milk cartons. We had someone wanting to check the contents of the minibar and then cleaning at our door both before 8am on the day we were to check out. We hadn't even been for breakfast and check out wasn't until 12noon.

Breafast and dinner were buffet style as you would expect with a 4 star hotel.

The main issue we had came at checkout. We had booked a last minute deal on the internet for dinner, bed and breakfast at the Crowne Plaza. We were quoted a price and the price rate said "for one or two people" but the room could have three people in it. When we came to checkout the reception staff said that the price quoted for only for one of us and we would have to pay an "additional guest fee" for the second person. We disputed this and produced our copy of the confirmation email. The reception staff just said the internet rate was wrong!! Anyway, we asked for the duty manager who agreed with us within 3 minutes flat and told the reception staff to refund the extra person charge but they kept trying to show us we were wrong. We finally had 69JDs refunded in cash to us. Now we are not saying that we had a problem with all the staff. The consierge staff were vey helpful (got us tickets for Petra by Night tour and left the tickets in out room for us) as were the restaurant staff.

I'm sure if you were part of a tour group then you would have no problems at all with this hotel. If not part of a group, just be sure of what you are paying and don't be afraid to question them. Oh and lock your bedroom door while in the bathroom!!

The hotel is a short walk to Petra however the Movenpick is a nicer hotel and actually nearer despite what people say on here.

The hotel is quite dated and the rooms are small and furnished with nothing newer than 20 years old. But it isn't tatty or falling apart and the service and advice is good throughout the hotel.

Hotel has a nice pool and amazing views from the sun terraces and restaurant but again the prices for drinks are quite pricey.
Soft drinks 1.5 dinars
Beer 4.5 dinars
half bottle of wine 11 dinars
full bottle of wine 22 dinars
tea/coffee 1.5 dinars

The restaurant food can vary but was actually a good couple of days when we were there, but if it is slack it certainly isn't worth the money and can be very unvaried.

Petra is walking distance, little petra is 10-15 minutes away but wouldn't stay too long as once you have explored, this hotel has a 3-4night MAX shelf life with me as there is only so much to see and this hotel isn't the best around.

Important Note:
Throughout Jordan there is a 5% service charge and a 16% Tax on all food and drinks.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Petra for 2 nights. It is clearly the place to stay in order to see Petra itself as it is so close (a 2 minute walk from the gates). The service was ok as well. Breakfast had a good range. Where the hotel is let down is the rooms. You couldn't swing a cat in the bathroom, the bed was shocking and the air conditioning didn't work. It was freezing outside but the room was really stuffy. So we kept getting up in the middle of the night to open the window and then to close it again. Good views though.

We stayed at the Petra Guesthouse , which is actually part of the Crown Plaza but in a separate building. The location is really great, just about inside the gate to Petra itself. The Guesthouse has recently been refurbiushed so the fittings and fixtures are all new, however this does not make up for the size of the rooms which are really small. All rooms overlook the roof of the restaurant, kitchen and public areas. There are noisy air conditioning units on the roof which turn on and off 24 hours a day. The noise is not conducive to sleeping. I like a bit of fresh air so opened the window which results in the air conditioner in the room turning off, making the room very hot. I complained about this at about 10pm and I must say that the mainetenance person arrived very quickly. We were moved to one of the villas the following day. The Villas are much larger and quiet and you can open the windows. They have not been refurbished yet, so are a bit dated.

We asked to use the wi fi and were told that this could only be done at the Crown Plaza in the lobby. Crown Plaza wanted to charge for the use of Wi fi. This was the only hotel in the whole 5 week trip through Egypt and Jordan that wanted to charge for the use of Wi fi. We did use the pool at the Crown Plaza which was reasonably pleasant although a bit small for the size hotel so gets quite busy late in the afternoons.
The breakfast ws OK , but the restaurant was a bit hot and I had to ask for the airconditioning to be turned on.
My advice would be to book a villa even though they are a bit dated but the location is excellent after a long day walking in Petra. We stayed for three days and walked all day every day , so were exhausted by the end of each day, but it was well worth the visit.

I would agree with other reviews about the state of the hotel. It is definitely tired, and not really worth the five stars. The beds were comfortable, amenities provided, all as it should be in a five-star, but it definitely needs refurbishment. However, I again agree with the other reviews about the location - it's so close to the entrance gate that it's worth it just for that, and the views of the rocks from the main dining room were magic.
We were there for such a short time that I can only comment on the breakfast - it was excellent, with a lot of healthy choices and good variety.
Tips: Remember how you got from the hotel to the entrance gate! You will get back from Petra totally worn out, and there are nameless paths leading everywhere from the entrance, with no sign for the Hotel. Alas, Hansel, breadcrumbs will probably disappear...
Naughty tip: Bring your backpack down to breakfast, with a couple of plastic bags inside, and then surreptitiously make up some snacks to take with you to Petra...

The main benefit of this hotel is its location within walking distance of Petra.
The rooms are mainly ouside on several levels and if raining one would get wet going to the reception and dining room areas. The rooms were comfortable but the carpet in the room had not been vacuumed prior to our visit.
Bathrobes were provided, but slippers should have been given as the marble floor in the bathroom was very cold !
The construction was poor , the edges of the many outdoor steps were crumbling.
The room safes were temperamental - ours was poor but another guest in our party had to call the manager twice in order to retrieve their possessions.
The food was good, but too many chairs were set out on the tables meaning the guests were crammed together, The layout of the buffet resulted in long queues.
