In a spot (Petra) where rip-off is the only game in town the Cleopetra was an oasis of good food in generous portions (all you can eat- in fact) and the manager and owner both made us welcome and listened to our gripes about the cost of entry to Petra without criticism. The owner did point out that a second day was only 10% more than a one day ticket and he tried to soften our critique of the 'amenities' on the site but as I pointed out only a fanatic or student of that particular site would want to spend more than one day there and 50JD or almost €60,- is a huge hole an most peoples budget. Especially as it's for entry only - no map no explanation nothing else offered. The guys offering "free" horse rides were the most aggressive operators I've ever come across and that's saying something.
The food was great in Cleopetra. My friend had a kebab that he described as "really good" and had lots of trimmings. I had the veggie "all you can eat" option (there's meat too in this selection. The café was in fairness a bit of a throw-back to a 1960's greasy spoon style joint and not the sort of place you'd take your mother to but it and the staff had buckets of character. It was the only thing about Petra to make me smile.
