“Magical!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2012

As locals we wanted a different experience ..the camp was a wonderful surprise! The location was very serene and the ambiance in the evening was magical. The food was great and the staff very attentive. Our kids had a great time; they took short hikes right before sunset nearby and even went on a short night hike! The site itself is also very significan and contains a Nabatean winery and water channels! The tents were super clean and nicely decorated. The weather was fine and with two blankets each we were more than fine! I would definitely go there again soon!

Room Tip: Bring warm sweaters incase it gets cold at night!

Me, my wife and 2-year-old daughter recently stayed at The Rock Camp for 2 nights and staff were without doubt the most friendliest and welcoming people we came across in Jordan. The day we arrived was my daughter's birthday and the fuss and spread the staff laid on for her was so lovely and made the day magical. She loved it, and so did we. They also upgraded us free of charge.

The camp itself is very nice. It is what it is, a camp site, but we stayed in the luxury tent and they even moved in an extra bed to accommodate our daughter. The food was excellent and the conditions in the showers were very good. A short 10-minute drive away from the entrance of Petra with stunning views along the way.

The evenings were cold but the staff provided us with plenty of blankets to keep us warm.

I would recommend this place for people travelling with young children, while you can also get alcoholic drinks there in the evening to watch the sun go down.

They also have a volleyball court which is awesome.

Thank you for a lovely 2 days. We hope to come back again one day.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for luxury tent.

I have traveled to 40 countries and stayed in all types of hotels, but I would have to say that The Rock Camp is a unique experience that I will always remember. It is set in the desert with rocky hills behind it. As the sun sets, the rocks turn a beautiful rosy color. You can take a walk into the canyon just behind the camp, which is spectacular by itself. As you return for dinner, the camp fire is going with someone strumming a local instrument while serving delicious hot tea. Fatima than makes local bread under a tree and asks kids to join her in making the bread. This is all followed by a delicious dinner - amazing lentil soup, lamp, roasted veggies, hummus, salads, etc. After dinner Fatima offers to put charcoal on everyone's eyes and henna on their hands.

We thought we would freeze in the tents at night, but we each had two thick wool blankets on the four single beds inside the tent. All very cozy.

The location is also great. The Rock Camp is just 14 kilometers north of Petra so you can get an early start the next morning and be at the gate by 6 AM.

As for the price, it was only $60 a night for a single and about $140 for our family of four (not including dinner). All very reasonable for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

We had dinner at the Rock Camp. The food was excellent and the staff really friendly. We were even able to try our hand at bread making on the open domed hot-plate. Some of the food had been cooked underground! It was a great evening although very cold on the occasion of our visit in March.

Room Tip: Not really a hotel. You can stay there under canvas but we just visited for dinner.

At this camp they have some nice-looking American-Indian-like white tents with a whole bed(?) and bedsheets inside. Lots of candles, carpets etc. All nice, however, at night it got much colder inside the tent than outside - had I not been cautious for any potential living oganisms out there I would have much more preferred to sleep outside of the tent; and when I say cold I mean fridge-cold;and on top of it, in the morning, there was barely any air in the tent and one hurried to get out. We complained, but were advised to use more blankets (to be fair they had plenty simple ones available, but I ended up sleeping with 4(!), my jacket, gloves, hat etc etc and still got a cold which took me a couple days to cure) and, funnily, the next morning we heard other people complaining about the same and also being recommended to use more blankets. The point being is that there is just something wrong about the tents, because it was not THAT cold outside and we had a much better and more comforable experience when staying at more traditional unpretentious bedouin style camp. I think therefore that they have gone too much for "the look" rather than functionality.
I must add though, that the staff were very attentive in general and we had there the first and only tasty oven-baked zucchini bread during the whole trip but I would suggest that they get back to their bedouin basics regarding tent-building.
Another plus is that the road to Petra was very easy and good.
Overall, it was not "the worst place ever", but having in mind that it was not cheap and that I barely slept and sneezed through my visit to Petra, I would not call it a success.

This is a Bedouin camp for people who really want to have the experience but might be worried about the details. It is obviously run with great pride by its owners. We stayed in one of the luxury tents, which has comfortable beds, plenty of blankets, and a small sitting area. Electricity by generator from sundown to 10pm. They were generous with this as well, since several people needed to charge their cameras, so they left the generator on for extra time. The communal showers and bathrooms were absolutely spotlessly clean, the linens were fresh, and the mattresses were very comfortable. We opted for the dinner show as well, with great music, great food, and warm hospitality. Our children considered it one of the highlights of our trip to Petra. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Luxury tents. Just be aware that these overlook a gorge. It has a fence, but pay...

Like many others, I went as an extra excursion on a VJV trip. The henna and kohl experiences were pathetic and the drink was at least as expensive as in the 5-star hotels where we stayed. Watch out for rip-off trick - bar claimed to have no change and said that they would give it to me later in the evening. Went back after meal - still no change, so I took it in the form of another drink, which I didn't really want. The food was good, but my overall experience was really only pretty average.
