Took the taxi from Wadi Musa, but I believe there is a 2-3 hour walk possible from the Monastery. That sounds like a must-do if one were there for 2-3 days.

If you go, see little Petra first. It will give you some small idea of what the real Petra is like. It is a very small version of Petra, but it is still authentic.

Not to far from Petra , you will find a quite place between rocks , it deserve to see it , also there is a neolithic village there which give us a hint for the old settlements in Petra .

We were told to visit Little Petra by the owner of the hotel we stayed in (Valley Stars Inn) and it was very much worth it. We went about an hour before sunset so it was nice and cool and not a lot of people at the site. The site is easy to walk and can be seen within an hour or two. I recommend making the trek up the narrow walkway because the views on the other side are exceptional.

Our driver took us to see "little Petra" after we had spent 2 days at the awsome main Petra site. Little Petra is a 20 minute drive, and you had great views of the mountain ranges that contain Petra on the way to Little Petra.
Once there, there were no fees, no buggie rides and no hassles. The site is larger than we expected(although much much smaller than the main Petra site) but no less interesting. You can spend an hour here and see everything and be back for a cold beer in the late afternoon.
