“Brilliant Holiday!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2008

When i read the reviews on this site about the Hotel Lion i was worried (to say the least), but as the holiday was already booked i just put them to the back of my mind and hoped it wasn't as bad as everyone was saying it was!
All i can say is if you go expecting Britain you will be disappointed! Bankso itself is undergoing a lot of building work and the roads and pavements aren't great, but the building work happens during the day, so if you are skiing/boarding you don't see it anyway and it stops when it gets dark.
Right, back to the hotel...'The Nightclub' I can honestly say I didn't hear it apart from when i was in it!! My room was on floor five however and it is on floor one. But i think the restaurant is above it anyway so i don't understand how you could hear it unless it's the bar music and not actually the nightclub?!
Bulgaria hasn't banned smoking in bars/clubs etc so if you don't like people smoking then it's not for you. I believe however that the smoke in the lobby comes from the open fire as well as cigerettes, out of our group (of twelve) only 3 of us smoked and no-one else in the group complained about the smoke in the lobby!
The food was fine, I would suggest you get there early doors though, we did go later one night and although the food hadn't run out we did have to wait fifteen minutes for fresh to be made, but all of us found something we liked out of the selection and all left each night full! Again please remember they aren't British chefs but they do try (and succeed) to make food that we like.
The first day we went to the slopes the Gondola queue was massive!! However it was about 10am when we got there and we queued about 45 minutes to get on. It is the only way to get to the slopes and other chair lifts! The next day we went for half eight when it opened and we walked straight on, needless to say we did this again every day and it was fine. We even skiied down just after lunch and got straight back on. The worst time to go on the gondola is between 9am and 10.30am.
We didn't have any money taken from the hotel, but i would never leave money or valuables laying around in any hotel room and that includes here!! They do have a safety deposit box that can be rented for 4 lev per day. I only ever once had a problem with change in the hotel bar and it was for 1 lev! The only thing to be careful of is beer can vary alot in price depending on the brewer! The bulgarian beer is the cheapest and is actually very nice. The price in the hotel bar is the same for Stella though!!
The slopes can get busy in the afternoons and because there is NO green runs, ski school generally go up about the third/fourth day onto the nearest blue runs, so my advice would be to go further afield if you are competent towards the back end of the week which are quieter. We didn't have any injuries and that's not bad for twelve people. It is defiantely better for intermediates.
The hotel is warm, but we just turned the radiators off!!
There are dogs but they were all friendly and considering they live on a mountain don't look that bad!
I had a brilliant time in Bansko and would definately go back to The Hotel Lion.

  • Liked — Clean and brilliant location for slopes.

stayed in the hotel over the new year. looks the part when you arrive. prices in the bar and the mini bar are very good and not highly over inflated. the room was nicely presented, the brochure online gave option to book small double -it wasn't infact quite large with a chair that could pull out as a bed HOWEVER the only window was a skylight-which was not mentioned in the literature. asked rep to move us but said not possible. when it snowed we were cacooned-spolit it, as no view around the town and hills. the pool a little cool, the lifeguard has 1 rule for the brits and another for the russians-they can jump, dive in and splash about, the british residents were told to stop doing all of those! the worst part of hotel is the food-breakfast good and supply plentiful HOWEVER dinner was extremely poor on atleast 3 nights there was NO food left by 7.45 and dinner should have bben served till 9.30. staff in the hotel are not friendly except the staff cleaning the rooms. would not recommend. BIGGEST WARNING-the gondola, queing dreadful, far too many people to get up to the slopes-(takes 2,500 per hr & they had sold 10,000 passes) had to wait up to 2 1/2 hrs to get on. slopes cannot cope with that many more people and there is a HUGE amount of building work in the town.

Fab hotel with really helpful waiting staff.

The rooms are reasonable quality, clean and VERY warm. The only down sides are the constant banging from the night club that runs 'till 3am....get a room on a high floor on the other side of the hotel, and it is smokey...but then most places are the same as they do not have any smoking bans in place.

All in all a decent hotel to stay in given it's location to the gondola.

The skiing for begininer is great. I went to Bansko following a trip to Cham, this is much better for a learner. The ski instructors are really helpful and attentive. The local people are great, v friendly. The old town has a certain charm but there's loads of development so this wont last.

I have just booked to go back to Bansko (staying at the Grand Arena) for the 3rd yr on the bounce so it must have something going for it.

Where do i start. First impresions of the resort, what a dump!! The whole resort was like a building site, dusty, dirty and rubbish everywhere. The hotel itself was nice. However the food was an absolute discrace. Our xmas "gala" dinner was pickled cabbage and a piece of chicken i wouldn't feed to my dog (and we were waiting and hour and half after sitting down before we got that!!)
we went half board and had to eat out every night 'cus the food
was so discusting!!

The place is run my the maffia and money went missing from our room everyday!! we spoke to other people that were staying in the same hotel and their money and phones had also been going missing. we reported this to the hotel manager who said that "he knew our sort" and that "we just wanted compensation". Then threatened to throw us all out of the hotel if we didn't stop saying this. We also reported it to the rep who was not interested at all. The staff in the hotel were rude and unhelpful and conviently never had any change when you bought a drink(so if the drinks came to 15 leve and you only had a 20 leve note you wouldn't get any change) wouldn't have minded once or twice but we stayed for 2 weeks and this happened everytime we went to the bar!!!

There was not enough snow to accomodate the ram-packed slopes that i can only describe and extremely dangerous. with people pushing and shoving all over the place this resulted in my brother breaking his wrist and my step father breaking his ribs and having to fly home early.

This entire holiday was a complete nightmare. If you are considering a skiing holiday my only advise is DO NOT go to Bansko and DO NOt stay in the lion hotel!!!!

Where do I start????
The journey to the hotel was long, but fortunately we had a big luxury coach, so we didn't feel the pot holes that much.
We were a bit concerned when we got to the resort as there was no snow to be seen.
First impressions of the hotel was nice, new & clean, a bit smokey in Reception, but not unbearable. Our room was large, modern & clean. Our view was of a building site, so no chance of laying in due to noise & if that didn't wake you the barking of the dogs will keep you awake all night. The room was unbearably hot; there wasn't any room temperature control so it was like an oven and if we opened the window we would hear the constant barking of the dogs!!!!
We were told to meet for ski lessons at 8.30 & didn't get going until after 10.30! It was not a good start to the week & it didn't get any better. Our ski instructor was useless. We had a 7yr old boy in our group who she had to baby sit & didn't give us the guidence we had paid for.
The queues to the gondola were ridiculous, epsecially as it was the only way up to the slopes.
The Bulgarian people were extremely rude & had no manners. They obviously forget that it is us tourist that brings money into their country so they should be a little courteous. Be careful of being ripped off with the price of drinks. A bottle of sprite was about £1 one day & £2 the next. You wouldn't even expect to pay that much in London!!!
We went to Borovets last year and although, it isn't as modern as Bansko the people, resort & instructors were of a much better standard.
Our journey back to the airport in the middle of the night was ridiculous. We had a tiny mini bus which was very cramped & uncomfortable. At that time of night when all you wanted to do was sleep, it wasn't ideal.
Needless to say, I won't be going back to Bansko. I would however recommend Borovets to anyone.
