“We had a fantastic holiday”
Reviewed January 15, 2014

We stayed at the Avalon in December 2013 in a two family group and had a fantastic holiday.
James the Proprietor and his Bulgarian wife Vania we're passionate about making sure we enjoyed every aspect of our holiday. They helped sort out ski hire, lessons and taxis making sure that we got good prices.
The hotel was friendly and welcoming it felt like a home from home.
The grub was fantastic and varied from home made burgers to a range of curries.
The great thing about the hotel is that it is handy for the gonadal but also in the old town.
I can not recommend it enough to anyone who wants something a bit more personal than a package tour but wants the reassurance of genuine local knowledge.

The Avalon has a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. James, Vanya and their staff do all they can to ensure the stay is a happy one. The curry night is not to be missed and the gourmet burgers are delicious. In addition to this on return from the slopes there was often tasty little treats to greet you and enjoy sat by the roaring fire and before hitting the sauna. My family and I will definitely return. The beds are really comfortable and I slept really well. Lovely views of the mountain.

Room Tip: If you talk to the owners they will advise on the best type of room for your party.

The first time and every time you walk through the door to the Avalon you are greeted with the kind of welcome you normally receive from walking into your own family home. Whether its from the funny, witty James, the lovely smiling helpful Vanya or the unbelievably helpful reception crew, we always felt as if we were the biggest VIP guests not just in the Avalon but in the whole of Bansko. Every whim of our 15 strong group was catered for and more, but there was also lots of little gems from treats on the bar to nibble on the return from skiing to arranging everything that would be possible to be required to get our group onto the slopes and back again. Then there is the food, whether its the normal bar menu or the extremely tasty homemade gourmet burgers to unbelievable curry nights again not one of the 15 strong group which included vegetarians were disappointed. The rooms are comfortable, roomy and clean with lovely hot showers and ours had an amazing view over the town to the mountain slopes beyond. All in all the Avalon is in my opinion a first rate hotel with first rate staff, quality rooms and outstanding food. The question for me is not would I stay there again but I cant wait to stay there again the sooner the better, trust me stay here you will not regret it.

The welcome is great, not just on arrival but every time you come back to the hotel or come down for breakfast. Avalon is not a luxury hotel but James, Vanya and their team provide all those little personal touches that make you feel sometimes that you are in a 5 star hotel, the home made biscuits on reception when you come in from skiing, postcards stamped and posted for you, superb standard home made curry, decent wine, comfortable rooms and everything clean, efficient and done with a genuine smile.
James in particular balances providing a very high standard of service with a quite casual, laid back manner, your drink is served in seconds but he always has time for a chat and has a great sense of humour. He is a mine of useful information about Bansko and Bulgaria and will make sure you get the most out of your stay.
The spa area in the basement is unusual in that the hot tub is quite public and not enormous, you can just about fit two people in but is very relaxing after a hard days skiing. The sauna again smallish but very clean and very hot. Had a massage with Anna for 30 Levs for an hour and it was really good and did wonders for my aching calf muscles.
I really can't recommend this hotel enough, it is fabulous.
One big tip for all skiers in Bansko, in the morning there is often a big queue for the gondala, which at peak times could take you more than an hour. If you go to the VIP entrance at the back of the building, wave your ski pass around and say you are with George (Giorgi) from the ski school and they should wave you through. Although as an Englishman it does not feel right to push in, there is a certain pleasure in walking up the left hand stair case whilst all the people on the right wonder what VIP you are!

We changed travel plans at the last minute and phoned to ask for accommodation for 5 of us.
Hospitality flowed and we were welcomed in, all the staff were friendly and the bar/reception felt like a hub of activity with local people calling by. The fire and living area was relaxed and homely we were able to ask for cups of tea at any time always a good sign for Brits abroad! Phone calls were made to help arrange car hire on a public holiday, all went well and we had a great stay...
