It's a bit of a hike to get there, but the scenery is beautiful when you reach the crag and on the trail there.

What can be said about a place so well know all over the world. You see it in all kinds of places and a lot in well know art. But to see it yourself, you understand what's so wonderful about this place.

I have been many times and I never tire of going back. It is an easy hike and well worth the view! There are also several other sights along the way that are worthwhile. Make sure you have a map or GPS, but the trail is marked pretty good.

Hawksbill Crag - South-west corner of Newton County, Arkansas.
Although the trailhead to the Hawksbill Crag rock, is somehow a bit difficult to find, it is definitely worth it to step up to the challenge. Hopefully with the following directions, you'll find it easier to find.
Once you do, the loop trail of about 2.2 miles is quite well marked and very easy to follow. It's a relatively easy walk that can be done also with young children. But be sure to watch your kids, once you approach the cliffs.
So here go the directions: From I-40 head north on #23 (State Road). Then take #16 East, until you reach the tiny "Red Star" (about 3 houses). Turn left (North) on Country Road #5. It's a dirt road, but a good one, so don't worry. Stay on #5 without getting off while driving about 5-6 miles (best to look at odometer, when you get off #16 to #5). You will pass another small "village" (a few houses with lots of old cars and tractors in the yard) by the name of Ryke. About 1-1.5 later, you will see a small parking lot within the forest, on your left side. There will be a wooden bulletin board there, and possibly a few parked cars (depending on your hour of arrival). Park the car there. A brown attraction sign will display: "Access to Wilderness". On the other side of the dirt road, is the trailhead marked by a rock, the size of a low table, with different writings carved on it.
As mentioned above, the trail itself is easily marked with red plastic triangles on the trees and also some black arrows at trail junctions. Besides the famous rock there will be additional spots which will allow most beautiful views on rocks formations, and the fantastic dense, Ozark National Forest. Needless to say, that during the relevant weeks betweeen the end of September and November, those views will be even more signficant and impressive due to the automn leaves' colors.
Afterwards, when coming back you will continue on #5 and reach State Road #21 after about 6 additional miles. Straight ahead will be the entrance to the "Lost Valley" and the valley of the Buffalo River. Enjoy.

Unbelievable scenery and views. The drive to Hawksbill Crag takes you through the Boxley Valley and past the Buffalo National River.
