This is a great new lodge. If you don't know where to stay in the Oriente, now you do. The lodge is comfortable, quiet and beautiful. The river is a short walk and there is wildlife to watch from a hammock on the deck. Enjoy!

The Rio Quijos Eco Lodge has thought of everything to the last detail. The grounds are full of fauna and flora that surround many walking trails throughout the property. One of the walking trails leads to a nice beach area on the Quijos River, which is so close you can hear it from the lodge. The trails meander through the forest and provide for plentiful birding sightings. Many types of hummingbirds frequent the plants and feeders throughout the property. The Lodge is a perfect place to spend some relaxing time. Hammocks hang on the porch and the furniture inside is handmade and comfortable. The bar is stocked with coke, beer, and other beverages that make for a nice, relaxing place to sit after a long day on the river or exploring. Frequently I'd sit on the couch to relax and would find a bowl of hot popcorn. The lodge is open with many windows so you can view the sights while relaxing. Fresh water and coffee are also available. The cabin accommodations are top notch. Piping hot showers, beautiful wood floods, and a huge wardrobe are in the rooms. The rooms are quite large with 2 double beds and large windows on each side to allow for spectacular views and fresh air. The decor is festive, cheerful, and fun. Each room has a different color scheme and the sheets and bedspreads add to the atmosphere. There are additional rooms inside the lodge. The lodge is set well off the road so the only noise you hear comes from nature. There are many things to do in the area including mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, San Rafael Falls, hikes to the Oil Bird Cave, and many others. A short $2 cab ride to Borja or El Chaco or the bus runs in front of the property. The caretaker and staff work hard to make sure your needs are met and your stay is enjoyable. A perfect vacation destination in Ecuador.

The Rio Quijos Eco Lodge is a little slice of paradise. The quaint cabins are clean, comfortable, and homey. Look out the window in the morning to see what kinds of tropical birds are hanging around. The property is filled with delightful local plants--from the Reina de la Noche flower that only emits fragrance at night, to banana, avocado, and lime trees. Spectacled bear, gallo de la pena, and other exotic wildlife have been sighted on the property (although I haven't been so lucky as to see them myself). The banks of the Quijos River are just a few steps outside your door. Depending on the section of river you kayak, this is your takeout (how great is that?!?)

And, of course, the best part about this place is Ken, Juliet, and Angel, who treat you like family and make you feel welcome. Paddlers and non-paddlers alike will enjoy this tranquil retreat.

I had no idea what to expect when heading to the Oriente of Ecuador. The beta online is quite sparse, and even the guidebooks brush over it in comparison to the other areas. I discovered the Rio Quijos Eco Lodge (RQEL) through the owners, who are also based in North Carolina. My friends and I signed up for a week long kayaking trip in Ecuador and the RQEL was part of the package. The kayaking was truly world class, but to have a peaceful, beautiful and comfortable - even by American standards-place to return to made the entire experience one that will be hard to duplicate. Ken and Juliet have done a spectacular job respecting the local flora and fauna with the introduction of their lightly placed Lodge. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable, and you have your own bathroom (you can even flush the toilet paper)(this is kind of a big deal in Ecuador). Many an evening was spent on the front porch listening to the forest while talking with the other guests. I felt like I was home. I didn't even get time to walk the gorgeous trails - kayaking can be quite exhausting - and I hope that the next time I am there I will take the time. Just sitting around we saw an entire menagerie of spectacular birds. It's just seconds to the stony beach on the river with a view across to the Cloud Forest Reserve. It's not just a place to go IF you are in the Oriente, it's a place to seek out to introduce you to the Oriente.
