Magnificent building. Our room was stunning (room no 8) so can't really relate to other reviews. No problems with either water or heating - bathroom was fine with piping hot water.
Open fire in lounge was great place for pre or post dinner drink. Food was better than we have had elsewhere in Ecuador so far although still not hugely memorable. Breakfast was fine - fruits and breads plus eggs cooked to order.
We really liked it and had a great stay.

Great spot near Cotapaxi. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. We had laundry done and it was cheap and delivered to our room by evening. The horseback riding was not great, my horse was very difficult and tried twice to throw me. The ride was mostly on paved roads through a village with lots of angry dogs nipping at the horses.....
Meals:
Breakfast was very good with fruit and eggs and bread (meat available but we are vegetarian)
Dinner for vegetarians was just so so nothing special to write about but not bad. The picnic lunch provided for us one afternoon was a bit lame with slices of cheese between white bread and yogurt and fruit.
This place seems to cater to large groups of mountain climbers, and students.
The room was chilly but the heaters kept us comfortable and we do not like to sleep in a warm room so we were fine since the covers were warm.
WiFi available in lobby was sketchy, cell service OK

Room Tip: We were in Room #7 a suite under the Humboldt suite very nice with views front and back. Our only co...

We didn't stay here, only had one lunch, but it was some of the best food and service in our entire trip to Ecuador. The hotel is stunningly beautiful, the grounds are amazing, it reeks with charm and history. The entire wait staff made us feel right at home, the food was really fresh and wonderful. We will stay here on our next visit!!

Although we found the hacienda surrounded by beautiful gardens, we were disapponted somewhat by some little annoyances. For one we would have loved to sit amongst the flowers but only one seat with cushions saturated by rain.

The dining rooms were cold especially for eating dinner in the evening. Hot water took an eternity to arrive in the bathroom. Fires in the salon and corridors were often let to die down-cold again.

Breakfasts were very limited though sufficient in quantity; coffee on the other hand we thought undrinkable, by being presented concentrated and then the waiter asked how much hot water to dilute in the cups. And at +9000 ft the hot water is certainly not boiling.

So all in all good stay but I wouldn't return in a hurry!

STopped here unexpectedly after cutting our trekking short in Cotapaxi. The hacienda was quite old and charming. The chapel in particular.

Rooms were comfortable if not a bit cool. Thankfully they made a fire in our room, plus we had a space heater. This did the trick to keep us warm.

Shower was fine, but took 5-10 minutes until the warm water came through the pipes. Once it did, we were fine.

Breakfast was tasty with fruit, eggs, good coffee, etc.

Dinner was a bit staid and not as tasty, but fine since we had been used to trekking food.

The waiters, etc were friendly and helpful with a rigid old world persona. The woman at the front desk was less so making our arrival a bit awkward and rude towards our guide.

This place seems to get some food traffic, could get a bit more and needs to update ssome of its service/charm and personality a bit. But that said, its good for a night if you want a southern Hacienda stay.

Beautiful old hacienda with a great garden and a wonderful view of the Cotopaxi Volcano.
This place with a "gothic" charm is an excellent restaurant with a good quality typical ecuatorian food. It's a little bit more expensive than the average, but deserves at least a stop for lunch.
I tried only the restaurant, but I think it may be also a perfect base for visiting the most important attractions of the central ecuatorian Andes, like Cotopaxi National
Park and Laguna Quilotoa.

If you are heading south from Quito to the Avenue of the Volcanoes, you must stay at the long-historied La Cienega Hacienda in Lasso, Ecuador, whose family-owners date back to Ecuador's Spanish colonial times. The grounds are lovely, the rooms are comfortable and clean, and the food is good "typica" Ecuadorean. The hotel main building is almost 300 years old, so there was hiccup with plumbing, but the staff was on top of the problem quickly. It is one of the most well-known haciendas in the south and well worth a visit. If you can arrange a visit to a nearby Rose Plantation, that is impressive as well.
