Mid week lunch with extended family. Food was very good - presentation is basic but the ingredients are all top class. I had Venison cooked in Guinness and Port and an Elderflower cheesecake, and both were fantastic. But what makes the Anvil stand out is Fred, the proprietor. Hearing our accents, he proceeded to launch into Dublin related song, but he was equally entertaining on explaining each dish, recommending the desserts, showing us a photo album of the original building work etc. The rest of the staff are very good, but the man is a star, and the Anvil reflects his personality and taste. If you want 'serious' rather than hearty food using excellent ingredients, maybe you should look elsewhere but I absolutely loved it.
