“Very good yet not perfect”
Reviewed August 11, 2012 via mobile

Having read through the reviews we expected a lot. Presentation of the dishes was very playful and refreshing (the vine with amuses, gin tonic dessert...) but the the taste is not always at the same level. And waiting times between the many dishes were a bit long at times. During our holiday in Slovenia we remember at least one restaurant that was still a lot better.

But maybe I'm a bit too severe, we had a wonderful afternoon lunch, our young kids were treated very well and the bill of 140 euro for 2 adult diners was extremely good value compared to what you pay in northern Europe.

“Jewel on a hill”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

The old aristocratic villa settings are ideal for a truly relaxed dinner in late spring or early fall. Everything is close to perfection as one would expect in a house of international repute. The place is packed during the weekends, book your table a month in advance. Big parking lot. Nice and well-kept bathrooms, though drainage for one is the one point less than perfect, reflecting sometimes in odors that should not be there.

Creativity is the name of the game. We have indeed tried some dished and seen some acts a few times in the past years, but there again, we do visit more than once a year... Tomaž Kavčič, the chef, is chatting at every table, smiling, inquiring, explaining, and most of all - telling the story of each of the dishes. Lovely stories. Great food. Most dishes are relatively simple, but combination of different tastes and textures in just the right number and just the right ratios is as persuasive as can be. Do not miss his gin tonic. 16+ for the food alone out of 20.

It is the one place in Slovenia where I have never asked either for menu or for the wine list. Obviously one should never come for a quick lunch or dinner, unless by chance, travelling along the highway. It is a half day event. Thus you best allow yourself to be spoiled according to chef's choice, and he matches the dishes with wines from his well stocked cellar with uncanny precision. No mistake till now, ever.

Of course you need to take your time, even if there are no embarassingly long intermezzos between dishes. Anything from 3 to 5 hours for a serious meal. You will have no illusion regarding prices upon entering the place. It is a luxury restaurant. But you will be very pleasantly suprised when you get the bill - almost certainly it will be less than you will have expected. Add chef's cordial friendliness, the feeling you have been taken care of with all possible respect and help, and you will surely try to be back as soon as possible. Total experience is unique also well outside Slovenian borders.

If Michelin stars ever appear upon this small country, Pri Lojzetu will undoubtedly be one of the first two to shimmer in the sky.

“Wonderful lunch”
Reviewed June 27, 2012

We had a lovely lunch on a Saturday at this beautiful setting. The presentation is unique and somewhat surprising. A weeding party came up for drinks and musicians that all added to the ambiance. Our waiter spoke excellent English and had a great sense of humor. The owner speaks little English but does express his appreciation for your visit.
