“Nice place to stay, not a jewel”
Reviewed September 20, 2010

After a night in Cucao, we wanted to go back to Palafito Hostel and get one of the double rooms with private room. Unfortunately, the hostel was full so we finally ended in Unicornio Azul. It is a nice place to stay but certainly not a hidden gem like Palafitos. Correct but nothing special. We paid 67 USD for one night and both my girlfriend and me would have paid 3 USD more to get one of the lovely rooms of Palafito.

My advice: book in Palafito Hostel with time. That should be your first choice whether backpacking or with a more comfortable budget. Unicornio Azul is a nice second-best choice but lacks everything that makes Palafito an unforgettable experience. Lol, my review sounds like I am the owner of the latter!

We stayed 2 nights and the hotel needs to be fixed it looks run down.
We didn't dare to go out on the balcony it looked old and not secure.
The lady at the reception was nice but charged us for a printout. Breakfast ok

Yes it does have character and interesting architecture, yes the owners are very nice people, but the facilities are just not worth the $60/night. I stayed in the top floor and practically froze the night I spent there. Problems with the heater, they said. I will not stay here again.

After a pleasant enough drive through the rolling hills of Chiloe, we reached the hotel late afternoon. It wasn't very difficult to spot, being bright, bright pink, and one of the larger builings along its particular street. It's not in the best part of town, although the view across from it of the bay is not horrible. It's one of the priciest places to stay in Castro, so lets just say that we were expecting a little more. Okay, it's got character, and architecturally it IS interesting, but we felt more like we were staying at someone's old cottage than in the nicest hotel in Castro. The bathrooms were very old, ours was positively tiny, the blankets were thin, and the pillows almost nonexistent. I think the tv was a 14", and there was no air conditioning, which was a bit of a problem, seeing as how we were on the third floor, right under the eaves. I openned the windows to get a breeze through, but we let some flies in too.
In its defense, the staff did all they could to make our stay as comfortable as they could. The Chileans are a warm people and they take their jobs seriously. They carted in an extra table when we wanted to play cards with our friends (in their slightly larger room), and delivered drinks for us (it took a little while).
I wouldn't recommend it as THE best place to stay on Chiloe. I don't know what that might be, but for myself, the next time I'll just do a day trip and drive back to Puerto Varas.

Was the most expensive hotel we stayed in while on Chiloe. The view was the best thing as we had a top floor room (quite a walk!). There is a nice little area above reception to have an evening drink or read.

  • Liked — View from the room over the inlet.
  • Disliked — The price was way too high for Chiloe
  • Tips/Secrets — Probably best in town but be aware it is certainly the most expensive.

Manipulated pictures of Hotels became rare- but in Unicornio Azul this is standard procedure of advertisment. For good reasons.
Though architecture was great, some 15 years ago, the word maintenance is unknown to the management. So you finish up in designed rooms that have not been kept up to date for 15 years. All is made of wood, which is nice but you hear the neighbour better than your own partner.
staff is friendly. no doubt. but out of a planned stay of 3 days we left after one day. there is nothing in castro or unicornio azul you would not find somewhere else 10 times better (but for the same price)
