“Friendly place, great view.”
Reviewed March 11, 2012

My wife and I just came back from a week vacation at the Hostal Faros del Sur in the city of Ancud, island of Chiloe. We were there as part of a large group and our package included all 3 meals.
Faros del Sur is a new small hostel; it has approximately 24 rooms, all with private bathrooms and all of them with a beautiful ocean view. It is located in a very quiet neighborhood, only 15-20 minutes walk from downtown Ancud.
Some parts of the hostel are still under construction. The rooms are fine but a little tasteless, missing some decorations, pictures or whatever but I imagine it is because of the fact that it is still unfinished. By far the best room and also the one with the best view is their premium room number 14.
The rooms have a small flat TV, beds with duvet comforter, central heating, bathroom quite basic but kept clean. Soap and shampoo were provided.
The lobby area is very nice and it has WiFi available. The garden is well kept and the view is marvelous.
The meals were top notch home cooking. All the staff was extremely nice and Marcos the host very helpful.
The one thing I definitely didn’t like was the fact that the bed had a mattress cover with a plastic layer that made for a noisy bed and gave the bed a plasticky feeling. I heard a couple of other members of the group complaining about the same. Also the pillows could have been better.
In a nutshell a nice, warm welcoming place to stay.
We made 2 worthwhile tours; one that the hotel staff arranged for us to the penguin hatching grounds and another one we took with the rest of the group to visit a series of wooden churches that Unesco has declared World Heritage including one that was build in 1730 where the wood was linked, joined and spliced using only pegs and dowels and no nails.

Room Tip: If you are prepared to pay a little more pick room 14.

For the price of a Motel6, the Hostal/Boutique Faros del Sur is in a lovely location with an unencumbered NW view of the Pacific Ocean from the picture windows of each private room. The facility, set in the midst of a lush garden, manages to be quite comfortable; odorless, clean, peaceful and charming despite its vaguely Scandanavian cabin-like construction of stamped glazed cement floors, lacquered plywood walls and abundant construction flaws. Awaiting the arrival of hot water to the showers in the rooms requires some patience and in keeping with the practice one will find all over Chile, toilet paper is not to be flushed but is tossed into a waste can. Marco, the host and his staff were uniformly pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was simple but fresh. The town of Ancud, which is located on the northwestern tip of the Isle of Chiloe can be reached from the Chilean mainland via one of the ferry boats between Pargua and Chacao. Simply drive onboard and pay one of the ferrymen who will come by each car to collect the@$20 US fare ($10,000 CLP) after the ferry embarks.

Rooms are simple but cozy. Breakfast is rich and served by a wide window over the Pacific. The atmosphere is so relaxing that you will tend to change your trip schedule to stay a few days. To be perfect, we will suggest a better signing to get the hostal by car

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Pacific. It's more expensive but you won't regret it.

I agree with hungrydogie that Marco is a blue eyed smooth talker with a iphone... but this is a hostal not a boutique hotel as the name tries to make you believe! Marco was relaxed as he discovered that it's a good business to arrange half-board packages for elderly guests (retired persons) - we had full house in early December (pre-season)...

rooms are very simple and "soul-less" and the cleaning standards are according to South America standards (mould in bathroom, simply repaired things) but you pay what you get (27.000 CLP for 2 with breakfast - so what do you think you can expect?)

Yes I wouldn't have liked to pay much more (offical rates were around 30k CLP) but you'll get a good night sleep and wake up with a view to the sea.

Recommended for the price!! Above average because the value is acceptable and the views are great!

Room Tip: all rooms face to sea, try to get upper floor (nobody walking on you)

The hotel has lovely views but the manager/operator is smooath talker who will give you all kinds of excuses for not having hot water in the mornings for shower or the fact that the staff were collecting leftovers ( cut cheese and quince paste) from the breakfast tables and putting them back in the fridge. I know because we kept our personal things in the kitchen fridge. The breakfast consisted of a sugary drink -called juice - no fresh fruit, except when I brought up the subject with him and only because on our second night there were more guests. The breakfast ham and cheese were pre-cut the night before on several little plates depending on the amount of guests and left all night on top of the kitchen table. The pillows were flat and LUMPY. For that same money we had much better service throughout the two months we were travelling in Chile.

The worst part is his attitude!!! he is rude an very unprofessional.

We stayed 4 nights in this lovely B&B. Marco and the service was very helpful and welcoming. The breakfast was very good and the view from each room over the changeable pazific is fantastic.
If we come to Chiloe-Ancud again we will of course stay here.

We very much enjoyed a night at this simple but comfortable hostal (small hotel). Each room has a view of the water, breakfast was great, and the owner speaks English, if that is a concern.
