Loved the hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful. Room in block 5 was great over looking the pool and towards the sea. Pools were great and very big. I booked a privilege club room. Was constantly being approached to attend the VIP breakfast which was annoying. I am not sure if the cost was worth it although I did like the a la carte breakfast on the beach each morning. I thought the food at all the restaurants was good, although the buffet food was always just warm. Big shout out to Joelle who seemed to be working non stop in each and every restaurant. My only disappointment was the beach, the big ugly tanks spoil the view and the huge amount of seaweed was very off putting.

This was my first time out of the country and it was an all girls trip (9 of us to be exact). Everyone was extremely welcoming and helpful. They all had smiles on their faces and would sing all day. The language barrier was only slightly tough but they would never get frustrated when you didn't understand. Our first day there we met Peter, pictured below, and he was by far the best. He was always checking on us making sure our drinks were full as well as making us laugh until we had tears coming down our faces. Even when we weren't at his table, or just walking around, he made it a point to stop and say hello. Our entire group is already planning our trip for next year. Thank you to everyone who made us feel welcome. Especially, Peter. See you soon !

The resort is beautiful and what you’d expect for the price point. The food is great and the rooms are nice and clean. It’s nice being able to do a different restaurant every night. Sitting at the beach for lunch was the highlight of my days.

My issue is that every weeekend a couple hundred locals check in to the hotel and suddenly the service goes down. There’s now long waits at the bar for drinks and they serve locals first. The sports bar ran actually ran out of drinks our first night there and ignored us over locals. The buffet is over crowded and it’s difficult to find seating.

It was great during the week when you weren’t crowded and you easily order drinks/food. The weekend over crowded and really impacted my experience and is what will have me booking another resort when I go back.

My wife, Donna & I stayed at the Ocean Blue & Sand for 2 weeks between 11 October 2017 – 25 October 2017.
We flew with Thomson/TUI from Gatwick and used the ‘Premium Club’ upgrade as usual and have no complaints whatsoever about both flights

HOTEL - The hotel is set back roughly 1km from the main road, which gives a hint to wonderful landscaping of the grounds (after passing the security gate) before reaching the hotel, with the rooms situated in 10 buildings with three floors but still manages to have a nice & friendly atmosphere about the place.

ROOMS – We stayed in a double room on an All Inclusive basis, on the 3rd (top) floor of block 9 – we were in 9311. The room was spacious with two double beds, Jacuzzi bath with shower, fridge that was restocked on a daily basis with water, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi & beer, large flat screen TV and a iron/board. The room was cleaned on a daily basis - and the maid kept our room nice and tidy each day for us.

Block 9 was pretty handy for both of the pools which were only a few steps away after leaving the building and the beach.

FOOD - All the meals were served in either of the two buffet restaurants or the 6 other a la carte restaurants – the food in all of the restaurants was excellent/good for the two weeks we were there and one thing is sure, you would never starve at this hotel (we preferred using the a la carte restaurants in the evenings) and the best thing about the a la carte restaurants is that you don’t have to book them – you just have to turn up at your chosen restaurant at roughly 17:45/17:50 if you want eat at the first sitting which was 18:00 & there is no limit to the amount of visits to each (as long as they are open of course)

‘El Carey & La Tortuga’ - Buffet - Breakfast was served in this restaurant in a buffet style - eggs made to order, omelettes, hot food ie sausages, bacon etc, smoked salmon, bagels, doughnuts, toast, cereals, yoghurt, fresh fruit, fruit/vegetable smoothies and if you wanted one a Bloody Mary!!!

Lunch – Again served in ‘El Carey & La Tortuga’ restaurant with a large selection of hot items to choose from as well as a range of desserts

Evening meals – This restaurant also served meals in the evening which had various ‘themes’ whilst we were there including Mexican, Oriental, Hollywood etc plus different areas where items were cooked to order including pasta, steaks, fish & Chinese

We only ate there once in the evening and although the food was good it was our least favourite place for an evening meal

‘Villa Marina’ – Buffet – is set at the edge of the beach down by the party pool and provides lovely natural A/C with the sea breeze blowing through the restaurant. Privilege guests can have their breakfasts here in the morning.

Lunch – served here as well with a similar selection available at ‘El Carey & La Tortuga’ buffet restaurant.

All of the below a la carte restaurants, apart from the Sensai, are located at the hotels courtyard overlooking the lake which contains fish and various waterfowl which is actually very pretty & relaxing especially during the day when there is hardly anyone around

‘El Bodegon’ – Steak House - This is the steak restaurant which has various ‘cowboy’ related items on the walls and as with the rest of the a la carte restaurants the food served in here was excellent – the steaks were large and cooked perfectly - along with the service we received on the three occasions we ate there

‘Il Mascherati’ – Italian – This is the Italian restaurant which has various Venice Carnival masks on the walls and as with the rest of the a la carte restaurants the food served in here was excellent – the fillet mignon is recommended - along with the service we received on the three occasions we ate there

‘Route 66’ – American – This is the American themed restaurant, which is decorated with various pictures from the 1950’s & 1960’s plus models of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean & Elvis plus a replica of the motorbike from ‘Easy Rider’ – all good for photo opportunities – again the food here was excellent but we only managed to eat here once during our stay

‘Margarita’ – Mexican - This is the Mexican themed restaurant - the food was again excellent with very little spices used to accommodate the palates of tourists but spices could be added to the food if required
We ate here twice in the evening during our stay.

‘Blue Moon’ – Romantic - This is the romantic restaurant where men have to wear long trousers. We ate there 2 times during our stay and the service was impeccable. On both occasions the food was excellent – no complaints whatsoever

‘Sensai’ – Japanese/Asian - This is the Oriental restaurant where meals are served at the Hibachi tables for the show cooking. We ate there 2 times during our stay.
The show cooking was good but apart from some slight variations it is nothing we haven’t seen before and the food was excellent

This is the only restaurant that guests have to book to get in – the doors open at 11:00 am for bookings so it is best to start queuing outside at about 10:30/10:40 am to make sure you get a place for the time you want – I believe there are 3 different times 18:00, 19:15 & 20:30 (we always had the 18:00 slot)

DRINKS - As we were All Inclusive, the drinks were fine for us – a beer for Donna & I, a rum or two for me and cocktails for Donna, there is a large selection of drinks available at all three bars & the main lobby bar which were nice but during the day as it was so hot we usually stuck to soft drinks all of which quenched our thirsts by the pools.

They also have a coffee shop called ‘Mike’s Coffee’ – which is open from 09:00 until 23:00 - which serves various kinds of coffee, iced teas and cakes, cookies & snacks. It’s a nice place to visit to get out of the sunshine as its very cool inside or to visit after you have had your evening meal

There is also the ‘Overtime Sports Bar’ which opens in the evening until 05:00 I believe – a nice little spot to have a late night drink or snack and catch up on the sport being shown on various screens on the walls – there are also sporting items on the walls

POOLS – There are two pools at the hotel the ‘Party Pool’ and the ‘Quiet Pool’
The party pool is where all of the action happened from roughly 11:00/11:30 with the likes of water aerobics & then at 16:00 the music ramped up & the pools games began and of course the (in)famous foam party on a Saturday afternoon

The quiet pool was just to the left after leaving building 9 & they played music at this pool ever day which wasn’t too loud – the shallowest part of this pool was less than 1 foot so ideal for sitting in to cool down from the sun

DAYTIME ACTIVITIES – Not really a lot going on around the ‘quiet’ pool during the day – not that we are complaining – there was always music playing so not too bad
The ‘party’ pool was where the aerobics took place every day at around 11:30 and in the afternoons the music ramped up for the usual pool games plus on a Saturday there was the ‘foam party’ at 16:00

During the day the photographer would go around the pool areas asking if you wanted photos taking & there was also a guy going around with parrots, an iguana, a snake & a monkey for photo opportunities with them which were available to buy individually or on a cd of photos

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT – Can’t comment on this as we never saw any of it as we were always in bed before it started as we were so tired from cooking in the sun all day & eating lots of food that we tended to go to bed after our evening meal

There is a casino and a nightclub onsite but we never went to either so can’t comment on them

STAFF – 100% of the staff at the hotel that we had interactions with are both a credit to the Dominican Republic and the hotel itself (apart from the H10 Premium staff), nothing was ever a problem for any of them when asked – the management should be proud of these people for the efforts they put in to make sure guests fully enjoy their stay – and at no time did we ever feel that they were looking for a tip

THOMSON REP – I would have to say that we thought this young man was a good rep. He wasn’t pushy in any way to buy tours/excursions from him

He has also has space under the Thomson/TUI desk at the entrance to building 9 for guests to leave any unwanted sun tan lotions, after sun creams, mosquito repellent etc before leaving for the journey home to help cut down on the luggage weight.

This is for all guests to use at any time so just in case you still have a few days of your holiday left you could go in there and get what you need instead of paying for those items in the shop.

WEATHER - The weather we had for the two weeks we were there was hot, hot, hot – considering that it was the rainy season and Hurricane season, there was a quick 10 minute shower when we arrived and one or two very quick showers the first week and no rain at all during the day in the second - but hey, you’re in the Caribbean after all, what can you do about the weather (it rained occasionally during the night but who cares!!!).

SHOPPING – At the hotel there were two stores on site – a mini market type selling small gifts, t-shirts, hats, sun tan lotions, snacks etc. And there is also a duty free store which sells jewellery, watches, perfumes, sports wear etc at reasonable prices.

THINGS THAT WE WOULD CHANGE ABOUT THE O B & S – There are a few suggestions, and they aren’t overly major, that would make a stay at the Ocean Blue & Sand even better for future guests –

1 If the hotel states on notices outside every a la carte restaurant that for evening meals in the ‘Blue Moon’ a la carte restaurant the attire for men must be long trousers then they really must stick to this – but turning up at a restaurant in the evening wearing shorts & being allowed to enter isn’t fair on those who were turned away on occasion (myself included) or is it a case of tipping the member of staff who takes your table request when you arrive?

So basically if there is a dress code then stick to it or just do away with it altogether (I didn’t personally mind wearing trousers to this restaurant)

2 A point regarding the ‘H10 Premium’ staff (who have by the way now changed from yellow shirts to white shirts) who constantly harass guests for the first few days of their holidays – if guests wish to either find out more about this program or even sign up for it then let them go to the H10 Premium staff but don’t allow these staff members to hassle the guests – in fact it happened to us twice within 50 yards despite both members of staff seeing each other approach us and being told no thank you!!! – they stopped approaching us when our tans started to develop – bear in mind they are trying to sell you a timeshare package

3 The vendors who are allowed to come into the hotel at night a couple of times a week – they pitch up their tables on all approaches to the courtyard where the a la carte restaurants are so you cannot avoid them when you are either going for a meal, the stores or the Casino – they can be very persistent & very pushy despite being told no several times – again the management must curtail this behaviour towards their guests – if guests want to look then allow them to do so at their own free will but don’t force them to look at what you are selling

All in all would we recommend this hotel for a holiday – yes we would & would we return – mmmmmm maybe at some point in the future.
