Reviewed March 23, 2013

My husband and I just got back from a trip to Punta Cana. I booked this trip through Expedia, though did some research first with trip advisor and cheap caribbean. Iberostar Dominicana seemed to get good reviews, and the price was right; so I decided to book. We were not disappointed. The employees were very nice and most spoke English. The facility is very clean and our room was recently refurbished it seems (much better looking than the pictures). We were on the top floor, which was pretty nice except for when the elevator was broken (there were other elevators farther down if you needed one, otherwise the stairs were right there too). Our room had a nice balcony with table / chairs and a rack to hang your wet bathing suites (nice touch). The room was a family suite (had a separate room with two additional beds, it's own tv and and it's own balcony). Our building was set up in a courtyard style, which was very nice, gardens in the middle under open sky. The bathroom was nicely done and plenty of shampoo / bath soap etc (but no conditioner, so bring your own as the water is very hard). We had no problem with the air conditioning, but I could see how the rooms could get humid if it was not functioning properly.

The food is good, nothing to rave home about, but good none-the-less. Be sure to make reservations at the specialty restaurants as soon as possible ~ they fill up quickly and you are only given 'so many' depending on the length of your stay. Also remember that men need to wear LONG PANTS in these restaurants, and no tank tops at the buffet!!! We saw people turned away because of dress code - but this dress code is in the informational literature if you read it, and it is pretty much the same for every resort in every country!!

The pool is an interesting shape, allowing for plenty of space for chairs around it. There are also straw hut / cabanas surrounding the pool and on the beach, for those that want (or need) shade. They fill up quickly, so go out early to put your towel and book on to reserve (though you are not supposed to). There is a kiddie pool as well as shallow and deep areas in the main pool, so something for everyone. Near the pool is a restaurant that does a late breakfast and decent buffet lunch ~ much nicer than other resorts where they only offer burgers and simple snack foods near the pool / beach.

Iberostar Dominicana is right next to Iberostar Punta Cana resort, once past the check-in/registration area, the resorts share everything - restaurants, pools, activities, gym, shops etc ~ not sure why, but even with 2 resorts, you never felt like it was too big or there were too many people. There is even the Iberostar Bavaro on the other side, some of those amenities were shared as well.

I would recommend this resort! Bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray (bugs were not horrible when we were there, but having it was helpful).

Room Tip: upper level rooms have better views and probably get better breezes. lower level rooms have less privacy.

We vcationed fron March11-18 2013.This is our 5th time to the Dominica and we were not disappointed. The grounds are so clean and well kept.Tha anamination team, especially by the pool does a fantastic job,and the staff is friendly and helpful. The food at the buffet can be a little redundant but be sure to tray the specality restaurants and make sure you tray a momawana drink.
We asked for a specific room and they were able to help us out.You can spend more at other places in Punta cana, but we are already planning out trip back next Year.

Property:
Beautiful property, very well kept. One of the nicest I've seen.

Staff:
Friendly. Most speak decent English. The bar-staff/wait-staff were especially cheerful.

Rooms/Hospitality:
Room was ok. We were on the first floor, and room was very humid. The slider door didn't close all the way, so we had frequent mosquitos each day.
Sheets always felt wet at night, which made sleeping tough. Housekeeping did a fairly good job. TV at this resort, and every DR resort, is awful. Our remote control never worked properly the entire time.
Water pressure in the shower, and hot water supply was awesome!
Hair dryer worked intermittently, and after day 3 never blew hot air again.

Food:
Food was below average. Same thing, day after day. Bizarre choices. Beach buffets were often better than the main buffet, and there was nothing 'special' about the 'special' retaurants. The food was ok, but none of it stood out as excellent.

Entertainment:
This was our 3rd stay in DR, and our 3rd resort. Entertainment at IB Dominicana was the poorest I've seen.
The Star-Friends staff tries hard, but they should really invest in the entertainment, because once the sun goes down, there is nothing to do.
The live music available nightly at the Punta Cana resort was the best entertainment available. The Star-Friends band was quite good.

Beach:
The beach was awesome. Beautiful. No issues.

Pool:
The pool was nice, but had daily maintenance issues. The towel game is in full effect, so don't be afraid to return someones towel that hasn't been back to their spot for at least an hour. 'Reserving Chairs' is prohibited by the resort, but it's not enforced.

Excursions:
Beware of the 'free shopping trip'...It's a tourist trap that eats up 3 hours of valuable vacation time. We found the prices for items in the gift shops were often better than in-town.
Avoid any 'package' excursions, or 2-for-1 excursion packages. The combinations I've seen are very difficult to pull off in the same day.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is NOT on the first floor. There is no direct control over the air-conditioning.

We stayed at Iberostar Dominicana Hotel March 12- March 18. Our overall impression was this is a 4 star all-inclusive resort. We don't have kids but I would definitely recommend this resort to both couples with\without kids. It's a very clean resort from the room to the restaurants to the beach\pool area to the path ways in the resort (They could light up the path ways little bit more during evening hours). It has the best beach front real estate compared to the next door resorts. They had enough chairs both around the pool and by the beach. However, the ones that are under the palapas were reserved in the early hours. If you are looking for one by the beach area after 9am, good luck. I didn't like that people reserved the chairs. If people just used it when they needed it instead of reserving them for the whole day, there wouldn't be any problems looking for chairs under the palapas. The food selection was decent but could be a bit better. The ocean had more waves then I have seen in other Caribbean islands and it was mostly windy. It got really windy and cold one day during our stay where we just walked on the beach instead of going into the water. Regardless, the waves were fun but be careful, it could knock you out if you are not watching out. We were very happy with our room, we ended up staying on a second floor with the view of the pool area and a small pieces of ocean. The room was clean and the bathroom shower area was very nice and clean. The only thing is we hunted down a few mosquitoes in our room during our stay. I suspect the cleaning lady let a couple of them in while she was cleaning the room every day. The entertainment at the resort was decent. The best one was the circus show by the beach. Don't miss that show. If you are a big pizza fan, don't expect a good deal. They try but it's not even close to the ones we have here in the States. Overall I would definitely recommend this resort, also it's not worth to pay the extra money for the Bavaro and Grand Bavaro, I think both Dominicana and Punta Cana resort are enough to enjoy the Punta Cana beach and the good weather.

Reviewed March 19, 2013

We stayed here the first two weeks of March. This was our 4th Iberostar resort after staying in Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Plata. First the positives, and they far outweigh the negatives.

We had made a specific room request when we booked and were very happy with the location. The room was in great shape with very comfortables beds, nice walk-in shower and minibar stocked every two days. The room was very clean. One issue was that the maid often didn't come to the room until about 5pm when we were already back from the beach. The person who stocked the fridge also arrived late in the day and would enter withour knocking. I give the room and service 9/10.

The beach is amazing. We found the water warm, the beach cleaned every morning, the sand very soft and fine, and perfect walking for what seemed like miles in both directions. The RIU next door had zero umbrellas and little shade. We used the sailboat one day but they are very careful about the wind. The red flag seemed to go up with the slightest breeze and most days you could not use the watercraft. Also, the towel game is extreme here. The first couple rows of umbrellas are gone by 7am and the rest by 830am. What irritated me was the number of reserved umbrellas where no one came until 3 or 4 pm just to collect thier towel. The most selfish people were reserving umbrellas at the pool and the beach using t-shirts or thier own towels. I think it would help a lot if the resort did not allow any reservations with anything other than a hotel issued towel. Fortunately we are early risers and never had a problem. Overall I have to give the beach a solid 9.5/10.

The towel game exists at the pool as well but not nearly to the same level as the beach. You can find something up to about 9am. The pool was OK but not as nice and welcoming as the beach. We spent a couple days at the pool when the wind was just a little too strong for us at the beach. I give the pool 7/10.

The food was good but not spectacular. We were there for 2 week and it started to get pretty repetative. We ate breakfast and supper at the buffet and lunch at the pool restaurant. We went to the Mexican restaurant one night but really it was no better than the buffet. We skipped the other restaurants as everyone we talked to said they were just OK. Getting reservations is very difficut and you need to do it as soon as you arrive. I did get a bug or food poisoning which knocked me flat for 24 hours. The next day we heard of a few other people with the same ailment. Don't let this scare you as we only heard of a couple people sick out of the 100s that passed through there in our 2 week. At the airport on the way home we heard countless stories of other resorts where there were a lot of stomach problems. I give the food 8/10

The bars were ok. The beach bar and pool bar were good during the day. The lobby bar was ok but pretty busy at night with not a lot of character. We didn't find out until the 2nd week that at 8pm every night there is live music and dancing with a cooler atmosphere at the Iberostar Punta Cana right next door. Whether you stay at the Punta Cana or Dominicana you can use the facilites for both resorts. The booze was ok but unless you ask you will always get the lower quality domestic alcohols. I give the bars 7/10.

The entertainment was generally bad. The star friends work hard and do a good job during the day around the pool and beach to keep people entertained. We appreciated Emilio Sexy Man who made my fiancee's mother feel special every day. Unfortunately the night shows were not very good. Lots of dance routines and lip-sinqing and generally inappropriate jokes. At 8pm there was a kids show at the mainstage which was followed immediately by the star friends entertainment. While there were still kids around we found the manager of the entertainment team (and the host for the evening) crude with too many sexual jokes and too much grabbing of other mens crotches. This even happened during the best show of the trip when there was a acrobatic team at the beach in the afternoon and the entertainment team manager had his pants stuffed and kept commenting about all the men's 'sexy positions. The beach was full of kids. I give the daytime activities 8/10 but the night time entertainment a solid 3/10.

The grounds were always clean and the place is very well maintained. It is probably the cleanest and safest feeling resort we have been to so far. Everywhere you looked there were gardeners, cleaners and security. I give the hotel grounds and buildings a 10/10. One negative. Some of the vendors located right on the resort sell pipes. When one of our party picked one up to look at it the vendor said they could get "anything" we wanted by 4pm the next day. We were quite shocked at this offer of drugs right on a high end resort like this. This was our 2nd day there and we did not report it as we didn't want any trouble from the staff or other vendors we would have to walk by every day.

This review sounds negative but I only highlighted the couple of negatives. It is a beautiful resort with good food, great staff, excellent rooms and the best beach we have seen so far. It is a solid 4.5 star resort and one of the best in the area. We may return but generally like to try somwhere new each year. You cannot go too wrong with the Iberostar chain.

Room Tip: Ask in advance and you should be satisfied. We asked for a room close to the beach and pool. Also, if you are at the end of the building it is quieter at night when people are coming home from the bars and making noise.
