A lot and I mean a LOT of very personable and friendly people bending over backwards to make sure everything was enjoyable. The resort was pristine, the service was excellent and the restaurants were all 5 star in our book. We knew we were coming back after day one.

Walking into this resort, you instantly feel relaxed. The property has a spacious, luxurious feel with beautiful views all around. Even though the resort was busy during our stay, we never felt crowded. We were able to lounge in the comfortable cabana by the pool and under the shade of an umbrella with a beautiful view, on the beach.

The staff are plentiful, friendly, and helpful, although our translator app did come in handy at times. The food was also lovely.

We've been on several beach vacations around the Caribbean, and this experience was head and shoulders above the rest. The weather was perfect, warmer than Puerto Rico and The Bahamas. The resort was paradise. We would definitely consider coming back; a huge statement for us.

Room tip: We selected a swim-out room because that is what was available through Expedia (same price as "lower tier" room), but I would not recommend paying extra for this type of room. However, it was extremely conveniently located on the first floor, right by the pool exit, on the quiet side of the resort. So despite barely using the swim-out pool, there were still benefits.

We recently completed at 5-day stay at Iberostar Grand Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our entire stay. The staff was very accommodating with all our requests, including a bottle of wine each evening and specialty beers in our room. We chose the beach over the pool for some quiet time and waiters were always available to order drinks or bottled water. Each evening we dined in specialty restaurants with ease and if we did not like the location of our table a new table was offered. Highly recommend dining later rather than earlier if you want a less crowded experience. This gave us time to enjoy wine and cheese on our patio each early evening. Enjoyed the yoga class offered. The breakfast and lunch buffet have anything you want each day including fresh orange juice and eggs made to order.

The resort is spotless and even more beautiful in the evening. We really enjoyed the adults only experience at this resort and highly recommend this for other adults looking for rest and relaxation.

Room tip: Looking over the lake and pool area is beautiful, especially at night.

This review is a comparison of the Iberostar Grand hotels in Punta Cana (Grand Bavaro), Montego Bay (Grand Rose Hall) and the Mayan Riviera (Grand Paraiso), for those looking to try other places.

My wife and I (mid 50’s) have been to all three within the last 36 months. I will not give pros and cons, but instead try and identify the differences between the three.

First of all, they are Iberostar Grand hotels, so you can’t go wrong with any of the three. I would enjoy going back to any and all of them again. All three are beautiful properties, and all have that Iberostar feel to them. Lush gardens, great staff, outstanding facilities….so don't beat yourself up trying to decide.

Here are the differences.

All three resorts are relatively close to the airport, with Montego Bay being the shortest (10-15 minutes), Punta Cana in the middle (20-30 minutes) and the Mayan the longest (30-40 minutes).

The buildings in Punta Cana and Montego Bay are built in a horseshoe shape and are essentially one structure, while the Mayan is in a horseshoe shape, but there are multiple buildings.

The rooms are all very similar at all three properties. The only real difference is that very few rooms at the Mayan have any view of the water, where most rooms in Montego Bay and Punta Cana have some view (however, you may have to crane your neck a bit from some rooms).

The a la carte restaurants are similar at all three properties, however, the Mayan has better quality food, by far. Having said that, the Punta Cana facility has more options to sit outside on a nice evening.

The breakfast buffet facilities are exceptionally well laid out, with plenty of fruit, eggs, juices, breads, etc. The lunch buffets are again, very similar in what they offer to eat. However, the Mayan has very limited outside sitting for either breakfast or lunch. I for one enjoy being outside, and the Mayan was a little disappointing in that regard. The buffet for breakfast in the Mayan is not located close to the water, where Montego Bay and Punta Cana are right near the beach….a great way to start the day.

The staff is fantastic at all three resorts. The differences that we noticed were that Montego Bay and Punta Cana were similar, while the staff at the Mayan was a cut above. The English (if that’s important to you) is very good at all three resorts, but exceptional good in the Mayan. Because the guests are little more mature in the Mayan (by that I mean a little older vs the other resorts…however, this maybe just timing on our part) the staff are also a little less rambunctious. They are just as likely to sit and chat with you, as they are to ask if you want to play beach volleyball.

We have played the golf courses in the Mayan, and Punta Cana, but not Montego Bay. The two we played were designed by PB Dye, and have many similarities in style of course design. However, the Punta Cana course is far more forgiving (and for me, more enjoyable) than the Mayan course. Both are onsite and only take a couple of minutes to get to for your tee time.

The pools are smaller in Punta Cana and Montego Bay. However, the Mayan pool is salt water, and is quite cool compared to the other two. Consequently, this big pool gets far less activity. The Mayan also has a quiet pool for those that like that sort of thing. The Punta Cana and Montego Bay swim up bars get a lot of activity on most days, while the Mayan tends to be quieter.

All three have excellent beaches. You will not find a better beach than Punta Cana…it goes on for 40+ kilometers, while Montego Bay and the Mayan are more or less 1 kilometer in length. All three have soft sand and the beaches are very wide. The Mayan has a bit of coral in one small section, but it does not affect your ability to walk the beach or swim in the sea. Beach volleyball is active at all three resorts, usually twice a day.

Room tip: They are all good

Very nice hotel with good service and nice beach. The food was not very good because they dont use good quality and fresh food. A lot of semifinished product has been used and offered as delicates. Meals from seafood was sometimes uneatable. Majority of guest were americans and everything was focused on their needs (type of food, tips, during dinner you can seat only inside with strong AC). The personnel at bars really dont know how to shake basic drinks, they just use mixed ice with lot of sweet sirups. Prices for trips, massages cigars and others are to high in comparison with their quality and the level of living in DR. Personnel was very friendly and they made good job.
