Overall a lovely relaxing stay at this beautiful hotel. As it is a large hotel there is plenty of space particularly in the beautiful pool. The staff were very friendly, always stopping to greet you. We ate at all the restaurants and the pool and the food was excellent. As members of Accor Advantage Plus we received discounted food and drink so the pricing was great. The room was spacious and clean. We selected this resort as we prefer not to be in a noisy crowded town - so the location was perfect.
There are restaurants and mini marts within walking distance if you prefer to eat elsewhere. The Sofitel has a boat cruise to Hong Island. We just went to the beach across the road and hired a long boat for afternoon instead. We spent a few hours on the beach at Hong Island - crowded but pleasant. Then went around to the lagoon - and were the only ones there. 2000 baht for a beautiful afternoon.
We hired a car for 24 hrs and were able to get around the area for some sight seeing and shopping - it's easy to drive yourself and we prefer that to a guided tour.
I had no issue with sunbeds - we would get them whenever we arrived at the pool. I did like to have a morning coffee by the pool around 8am - and I could see plenty available then. Some guests reserved beds with a book or goggles but I did see other guests just move them to the side if the bed wasn't obviously being used.
There is a gym which I used several times, plus daily activities which were fun.
One suggestion to the hotel - there were quite a few young children staying and perhaps they could discreetly have the families more in one area and the couples in another. As we had left our 4 children at home we didn't really want to eat next to crying children or have them screeching next to us in the pool. Most parents were good and aware but others had their kids jumping into the pool right next to you whilst you were eating. Some parents are very loud! The rooms next to us had two rooms with the parents and the kids and they were constantly knocking to get into each other's rooms. Just a small suggestion that would push my review of 9/10 to a 10/10.
Overall a great relaxing stay and we would certainly come again.

A well managed, beautiful resort overlooking the beach with extensive gardens, huge pools 3 or 4 restaurants to choose from and an adjoining golf course. The service throughout the resort was oustanding. We had a very minor housekeeping issue on the day of our arrival which was quickly remedied and then a huge spray of flowers arrived from the housekeeping manager with a warm note of apology. The quality of the spa treatment was first class and reasonably priced for a resort of this standard. We took the option of a Thai cooking class with leading chef Phak Phoom, who made Thai cooking look so easy. On the final day we returned to our room to a wonderful farewell from the housekeeping staff with hundreds of rose petals laid out across the bed making up the words "See you later" and a huge heart of rose petals. We will be back to "see" this outstanding team again.

We arrived at hotel on 26.02.14 at 10.30 and although the room was not available we were offered facilities in gym/spa. The staff were always helpful and the hotel was spotlessly clean. The pool was great and the gardens very pretty. Breakfast had everything required plus more. The negatives, we were forced to set the alarm at 0630 in order to secure a pool bed as everybody ignored the sign stating beds cannot be reserved! It was not the English who were in a minority but the Russian, French, and either Latvian or Scandinavian clients. They all secured on average 4 beds as most had 3-4 children some as young as 7 yrs who did not require a bed! We found towels were placed on early but some people never got to the pool until 11am or they would leave for lunch at 12pm and not return until 3pm wasting the beds. The management need to supply more beds or smaller children size pillows to encourage them to leave the beds for the adults. The only other negative was there was a great bar with live singers but to hear them you had to sit in an air conditioned room rather than sitting outside in the lovely warm night. For all Brits avoid the 10 nights we went as it was the European children's break so the hotel was packed to the rafters with kids in the adult pool! There is a lovely shack 3 min walk away for lunch and further away near the Sheridan the terrace restaurant which was great. The beach is poor and when the tide is out rocky. It cost £10.00 to Ao Nang and the same back so quite pricey, the hotel bus was £2.00 cheaper and restricted on the times there and back. The Sheridan had a nice beach and was nearer the main town. So all in all the beds issue needs to be addressed and the bar in the evening needs bi-fold doors to allow people to have entertainment sitting outside. It was a lovely hotel and a great holiday but these things were disappointing as we were a couple with time on our hands and wanted to remain in the hotel in the evening but they seemed to only cater for families so it all died down after 2000.

We have just returned from Thailand and stayed at this hotel for 11 nights half board. When we arrived it was early evening and went to the Maya (buffet restaurant) for a meal at about 8pm having been told that we would have to book a table and when we got there the restaurant was empty! The food was awful, dried up, cold and tasteless. However, it did improve over the following week and the breakfasts were very nice. Being seasoned travellers we were not impressed with the hidden costs and service. Whether you were all inclusive or half board there was a set menu in the Venezia and White Lotus restaurants the a la carte menu had to be paid for as an extra and also coffee had to be paid for in these two restaurants. On every occasion that we had coffee at this hotel the milk jug was either cracked or chipped and the used plates were not cleared from the tables. The drinks were very expensive and no water supplied with the meals unless purchased.

The sunbeds appear to be an ongoing problem as on several occasions there were towels and personal items left on beds all day with no-one using them. Nothing was done about this and many guests complained. On the beach, which is extremely hot, there were no umbrellas just seats with hoods on that could be pulled up and were not effective in keeping the sun off.

Interestingly they had a courtesy/shuttle bus but this cost 199bhts each way per person to go to Ao Nang. It was easier to go by taxi. There was a lack of entertainment unless you paid to go to the events - another hidden extra.

We used the golf course early one morning and this was great. The hotel was very clean and the staff lovely but did not seem to be very well supervised. The management just haven't got it right and it is such a shame as the hotel is lovely. It was very quiet at night and this is one of the reasons we chose it. We intend to return to Thailand but would we use this hotel again? No. For a 5 star hotel it is somewhat lacking. These irritations could be resolved very easily and it is unfortunate that management do not appear to be listening to their guests.

I stayed at this property over Christmas 2013. The hotel was overcrowded with package tourists from Scandinavia.

Breakfast was unacceptably busy each morning and an extremely unpleasant experience. It was impossible to get a sun lounger after about 08:30 in the morning with guests resorting to lying on towels across the hotels grounds giving the impression that the hotel was more of a refugee camp than a luxury resort.

On Christmas Eve it was impossible to relax as the hotel had organised games for the children outdoors with loud music. I would not have minded had I been booked at a ClubMed, but I expected more from a Sofitel, especially as I had booked directly with the hotel and was not travelling as a package tourist.

The staff tried to address my concerns, but were clearly overwhelmed by the sheer number of residents.

I wrote to Accor head office, asking them to reevaluate their business plan or downgrade its status from a Sofitel (it should be a Mercure or even an Ibis) but have yet to receive any response in spite of my writing at the beginning of January.

I am a Le Club Platinum Member, but after this experience am considering re-evaluating my loyalty to the Accor Group, especially as they have not been courteous enough to respond to my complaint.

Wifey and I stayed here for 2 weeks late Feb/March and enjoyed our stay and liked the hotel very much. It has a few failings which really are managerial issues and could easily be sorted, but since they relate mainly to problems that have been reported here for many months, I dont expect they will be unfortunately.

There are really only three main problems, the major one being the sunbeds as reported many times before. It would be so easy to have a member of the pool staff remove items from sunbeds that were not used for say 30mins to release them for others, but dont hold your breath for that to happen, after 8pm you wont get a sunbed if the hotel is busy.

The other irritation for us was the unacceptably high price of drinks, we were on half-board but not even water included with the meal and the cost of a small bottle was 10x that in the beach bar nearby and 3x that of the 4* hotel 5 mins down the road and another 4* on Railey beach we spent 3 nights at. We dont mind and expect to pay a premium for hotel drinks but there is a limit as to what is reasonable and it was far exceeded. As a result many people just bought drinks outside the hotel and brought them back which no one would have bothered about if the prices were reasonable.

The only other possible minus, which is also a plus if you like peace and quite like us, is the somewhat isolated hotels position necessitating a 20 min taxi ride to get anywhere. Taxis were reasonable 500baht to Ao Nang and always available new and clean just outside the hotel.

The beach is 30 seconds away across a small road which is nt busy. We quite liked it, its narrow but virtually empty and the hotel provides a couple of dozen free sunloungers with head shades for guests. We did nt use them as it was far too hot for us 39- 40C and 90% humidity most days.

Some people have moaned about lorries going by, honestly you cant hear them from the pool over the usual noises there, ( lots of very well behaved Scandanavian kids whilst we were there ) and whilst they are fairly frequent they travel very slowly and certainly are not at all intrusive.

The hotel is VERY clean, the toilets near reception were exceptional could have eaten your dinner off the floor! The staff are lovely if somewhat disorganized at times but always have a smile and welcome for you something we did not experience in some parts of Railey beach when we stayed there.

The restaurants we found very good, all three in fact though the buffet Maya was nt up to standard on one night and closed early on another at 9pm. The hotel is very quite in the evenings after 9 which suited us. The buffet breakfast at the Maya was as has been mentioned excellent.

The Spa is beautiful, we had a Thai massage there that was excellent and professional but expensive ( 1800Baht ), a nice treat. We also had several massages in the one two minutes walk outside the hotel to the left opposite the beach bar, not the ambiance or professionalism but the massages were just as good and the ladies very friendly, so a more fun and relaxed holiday atmosphere that we actually preferred.( much preferred the price 250Baht for the same 1 hr Thai massage! )

There is little near the hotel outside, a very friendly small beach bar two minutes to the left that has cheap drinks and good cheap food ( does takeaways ) unfortunately right on the road so the traffic can be a nuisance. There is supposed to be another good bar/restaurant 5 mins to the right but we did nt go there so cant comment. Its supposed to be a favorite with aircrew staying at the hotel.

Another couple of minutes further to the left is an excellent attractive bar/restaurant with a "thatched", roof part of a hotel, set back a bit from the road and overlooking an attractive part of the beach where a small river joins the sea. The food there was excellent and the prices very good as was the service. We ate there 3 times despite being on half board at the Sofitel and enjoyed it each time, our bills were only slightly more than just our drinks bills at the Sofitel!

All in all an enjoyable stay and if you like a quiet holiday recommended. Probably best to stay bed and breakfast though and eat mostly out unless you dont mind the very high prices in the hotel.

Room Tip: 3rs floor garden/pool view rooms have excellent views.
