“Excellent place for families with small children”
Reviewed January 17, 2014

Beautiful hotel, lovely clean rooms which were not ready when we arrived (maybe due to New Year). So we had to wait for rooms for an hour. Hotel kindly promised to offer us something to eat in the reastaurant while waiting but then they added to our bill. This hotel is favored by families with small children so the pool area resembels a kinder garden.

We spent our holiday at this hotel in december and the situation at this hotel with the sunbeds is not acceptable! They should really do something to make people not reserve sunbeds, in other hotels i have been the pool staff has taken away the towels to sunbeds wich is reserved before 9.am and put them aside! Is not acceptable that you have to set your alarm clock before 6.am to get a sunbed when you are at holiday! This experience truly wreecked our vacation! If it had not been for this problem i truly would have reccomend this hotel, but because of this problem i cannot! I think they would make their guest truly more happy if they solved this problem!

Room Tip: Ask to get away from the mosque

We are a family of 5 wich spent 2 weeks at this hotel. The hotel is beautiful and the food is good, but the vacation was ruined by the stress in the morgning to find a sunbed. When you have to set the alarm clock in your vacation with 3 kids, it is not a vacation. Even if you are by the pool 7 o clock this is to late to get a bed!!! Thats unbearable! I saw the pool guys reserved beds for guest, maybe you have to pay them to get a bed, but it cannot be like that!! I will not recommend this hotel until they do something about thw sunbed issue!!

Rooms: Large room with nice furniture and large bathroom, well cleaned by courteous and friendly housekeeping staff. Bed was too hard for my taste but pillows and bed linen of good quality.

Food: Nice buffet breakfast with a good variety of western and Asian dishes. Very cold indoors. Other dining was over priced and of average quality and not really worth the effort.

Pool: Large pool area with plenty of space, the annoying habit of booking sun chairs in the early morning is prevalent at this hotel also and although against hotel rules not really enforced. Come later than 9 am and you will lay in the grass.

Spa: Good facial in a relaxing atmosphere, manicure below par and not price worthy.

Swedish travel agent Fritidsresor has started their kiddie club Bamseklubben at the hotel, in my book that is not a good thing and shows that the hotel has to "cave in" to requests from large agents to fill the hotel, this means that the hotel clientele will change over time, more kids and more noice.

This is a great resort, about six years old, in a secluded area, 60kms from Krabi, 166kms from Phuket. If you want a "bar scene", don't stay here. If you are on a package deal, don't stay here. If you have a family, this is a perfect place.
The White Lotus is the best place to eat, followed maybe by the pool cafe. Try ou the Thai or the Indian set menu at the Lotus, our choice was the Thai The buffets are for those with their snout in the trough, they take heaps, they waste heaps.
Venezia restaurant was a little overrated, but good.
Enough people have had their say about the reserving of sunbeds. It's a farce.
The beach is ok, you'll always get a sunbed (we did), only thing missing is a little service. Perhaps the hotel could organise some cold drinks etc to be brought around in a cart periodically?
Gold Course is thirsty, and the rough is ROUGH!, Still fun.
Gym rule need looking at. Allowing 12 year olds (and under) unsupervised, to use gym equipment is ridiculous. They'll hurt themselves, and SUE! Make it 16, get real! This isn't a creche, kick 'em out!

People shouldn't stay here if they have allowed / expended every last cent just getting here. It does cost money to eat and drink at a resort hotel, more than a local shanty shack with dodgy food hygiene, wake up!

People should also make sure they first thing they pack for holidays is MANNERS! Geez, the staff aren't dogs , they're people, treat them with some dignity. Remember please and thank you.

special mention to the girls in the ice=cream / coffee shop, job well done, and little Sao, who was just learning, and Epsie, and Chart.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel from 25 December until 8 January on AI basis. We always have our main holiday at this time of year but this was our first time to Thailand.
The hotel and location if like us you want to chill out in a quieter resort but close enough to get a taxi to a busier resort ie Ao Nang which costs 400B is perfect, however if you want to spend your time on an idealic beach I would recommend a hotel closer to Tub Kaek beach which is a further 5 mins from here by Taxi. The hotel beach is across a road but no issues crossing and there is a security guy to ensure no problem in crossing. The beach has limited loungers from the hotel, the main issue is it is not the largest beach and there is lots of broken coral and shells etc so quite awkward to enter sea if no sea shoes.
Ok, so the hotel has the largest pool in Thailand - however they have not provided enough sun loungers which as you will see from previous reviews is the main negative. We were told there are 200 beds for 600 guests, therefore you have to get up by 7am to try and get a sunbed, this was not such an issue as we were in room 395 which is very close to the local mosque so at 5am we were woken by the call to prayer which is broadcast by speaker, it was defining on our balcony! What bothered us is many people were reserving beds including pool staff for guests and they were not using them until 3pm some days, despite having a sign stating if you do not use bed within 45 mins your belongings will be removed this was never enforced.
AI is clearly a newer concept here and has some strange rules, you can only get drinks with your package 11am to 11pm even a bottle of water from the pool bar! There are restrictions on what drinks are included, no branded spirits only Thai. Also the measures are particularly small, make sure you don't get served in the Explorer Bar by the girl with her hair in a bun as she gives the smallest measures of alcohol I have ever experienced. The Explorer Bar is off the main lobby has Karaoke every evening for 2 hours, this is the only bar in the evenings so if you don't like Karoke you need to sit in the Lobby listening to piano music, however you need to get your own drinks from the Explorer Bar. We felt the hotel lacked atmosphere in the evenings, with only 1 bar and compulsory Karoke every night! Only the guests who were staying on an AI basis seemed to be around in the evenings, anyone else went out of hotel for cheaper food and drinks.
There are 3 restaurants, Maya Buffet good for breakfast and we always ate lunch here which was a small buffet with no change on menu every day, pasta made to order, Thai dishes, salad or burger and chips. However we did like the buffet as we enjoyed the food. We tried the pool bar once, quite busy alongside pool area and service was slow. Italian restaurant was ok, quite cool in there with air con so ladies may want a wrap etc, the main issue is the service was quite slow. Our favourite restaurant was the White Lotus which we eat in most evenings, the menu offers tasting menus for Thai and Indian which we enjoyed trying different dishes and once you know what you like and don't they will vary for you. Again service could be slow on the evenings Tar was not working, Tar is a great member of staff who always made us feel welcome and valued. On our last evening we booked a table and he asked which table we would like, the Indian menu was not available as they had a Indian/ Italian buffet event but he asked me what dishes I liked and arranged for me to have dishes provided especially for me so I was not disappointed on my last evening.
The hotel is lovely in a quiet location, however for us as a couple there were too many families particularly with young children from Scandinavia etc. we felt this is one of the reasons it lacked atmosphere in the evenings as many were in bed early and smaller number of couples etc.
The hotel offers lots of activities some free some chargeable, they also have an excursion office and have daily boat trips etc. We went on the Hong Island trip which is only 15 mins across the sea by speedboat you stay for 4 hours and have a picnic lunch served to you on the picnic benches by the Sofitel staff, we enjoyed the trip and beach and sea were lovely however it does get busy with lots of day trips. We also walked the nature trail where you will find ship wrecked boats from the Tsunami.
The hotel has a shuttle bus service which takes you to Ao Nang, however it is the same price as a taxi and you are restricted to times and you have to book in advance, don't make the mistake we did and book the 10.30 return and stay later getting a red taxi back as the hotel still charge you for the shuttle.
Overall we had a lovely time, the hotel is well appointed, staff are friendly - there can be language issues but we are in Thailand do we know much Thai? However they really need to sort the sunbed issue as I don't want to come on holiday to stress over getting a sunbed.
