Visually stunning property kept in pristine condition throughout. Large grounds and pool area add to the feeling of "away from it all". Staff are ultra friendly and helpful. Large well maintained rooms. Our only problem, as with other Sofitel hotels, is that the beds are way too hard for our liking and after a couple of nights cause shoulder and hip discomfort.

Just returned after 9 days in Phokeethra Sofitel. Wonderful grounds - amazing large sparklingly clean pool. Sunbeds galore both in and out of shade with abundant towels and service excellent. Rooms spacious and well appointed. bottles of water were complimentary each day with tea and coffee making facilities in each room. The mini bar was well stocked and not overly priced. Breakfast had a wonderful variety of foods - all well prepared. Staff were5* all the way from our gracious welcome to our departure. Spotlessly clean resort with happy workers - who wanted to please. Great activities programme, lovely spa and first rate gym. We used all the restaurants and the ambiance in all was super. Don't particularly like Italian so more my taste than poor restaurant and not a great fan of buffets but the food was good and there was good variety. The Thai/ Indian was fabulous making curries of varying strengths to suit individual palates. It was expensive to eat in the hotel compared to lical restaurants but it is a 5* hotel and they're expensive everywhere We had a superb break here. Would thoroughly recommend for anyone wanting a luxurious quiet holiday.

Location: 20 minutes by taxi from Ao Nang, on a quiet beach with a not-so quiet country road in between with ore trucks going in and out to the nearby ore pier. The beach is practically private, but could use some tlc; the beaches in this area have some litter and broken glass but only Sheraton seems to clean its beachfront daily. I'd recommend Sofitel to do the same. Village center, supermarkets and some very nice restaurants are a short walk away, some of them are reachable by the beach. Taxi stop is right by the beach, 20 meters from the hotel. Fare to Ao Nang is 400 baht, can be haggled down to 300. Krabi Town is 500-600 baht and about 35 minutes away.

Hotel: Reception area looks fantastic and check-in is very pleasant with with drinks and cold towels while lounging in the shade, no need to get up since you sign in with an ipad. The activity center in the lobby has boards with the daily activities and trips to the region with the hotel speed boats. We compared the pricing with tour operators in the area and our own travel agency and Sofitel is the one of the cheaper ones. And their boat is no longtail.

Room: We had a luxury room with a view to the spa and could see some sea as well. The bathroom was big enough with a tub and a separate shower area. No complaints there, 2 people fit in nicely and there was enough complimentary cosmetics to keep my sunburns moistened. The minibar was expensive (as they always are) and closet space limited (but at 38C wardrobe options are limited anyways). Fresh ice and fruit was delivered to the room every night (very nice). And yes, the wifi should be free, it's 2012.

Grounds: The pool is great. Really. And huge. A bar in the middle and a separate jacuzzi area, infinity pool, kids pool, water polo, bridge with a water fall, sun bathing seats with bubble ports... it's great. We got great service by the pool, a couple of Singhas do wonders in the afternoon heat. Food is expensive but good if you decide to eat by the pool. There are hammocks in the garden, but in the sun so not for my pale face, great to watch the sun set tho.

Activities: The gym is very small and not heavy enough for the serious lifter. But the equipment is good quality (Leoko) and everything works. Sadly I didnt have the time for the complimentary thai boxing lessons. The staff at the gym was very helpful.

Staff was very helpful in the activity center also; it was very easy to book trips and things to do even with the slight language barrier. The Hong Island trip is a must, a short and comfy ride to the island paradise, we took the total package 1600 baht each with food, snorkels, kajacks and beach towels. Snorkeling was so much fun but the best was the trip to the lagoon, the place was absolutely beatiful, we stopped at a nearby secluded beach and found a cave with stalagmites and a meter-long lizard, I felt like a little kid.

We also took the bike tour to the nearby mountain for 700 baht each. The bikes were pretty banged up and could use some maintenance to say the least. But the trekking to the mountain was an unforgettable experience. The rainforest was full of sounds and smells and plants and streams and our guide Mr. Big kept sure we dont pass out (it was 38c in the shade mind you) by supplying us with bottled water every 10 minutes. The view from the peak was breath taking ( not that we had too much breath left).

Food: The breakfast is awesome, you can eat yourself senseless and find something new every morning. Could use some more thaifood tho. Eat outside, there was a funky smell indoors the first couple of days.
We only ate twice at the hotel restaurants, once by the pool and once in the White Lotus. Pool bar was okay but a bit pricy, but the Lotus was very expensive, food a bit bland and the service was just bad. I had to ask 3 times for my drink and when it finally came, I was already finished with the main course. We didn't see the point of an italian restaurant in our thai hotel so nothing to report on that.
There are nice and way cheaper restaurants towards the village, the closest 600 meters down the beach with a superb view.

Service: the staff was incredibly nice and helpful and wanted to chat about where we were from and how they lived and our plans and their plans... we felt very welcome from the moment we stepped from the bus.

Area: Ao Nang has had some nasty headlines lately but we felt safe everywhere we went, day and night. Ao Nang is a typical tourist town but the outskirts are "farang-free" and it is possible to get a glimpse of normal thai living on the taxi drives.
You can easily book trips all over the bay area from Ao Nang and we took a few longtail trips to the legendary Railay beach, better go see it quick before it's developed into oblivion.

We recently stayed at the Sofitel. We had been booked into another local hotel but on arrival found it to be well below our expectations. The manager of the unnamed hotel was exceptional he accepted we were very unhappy and arranged for us to transfer to the Sofitel, we were given one of their 'opera' suites which was stunning, with two rooms, fantastic bathroom and direct access from our balcony straight into the pool. Although I agree with some of the comments regarding slow service and slightly pricey food (in comparison to that offered outside the hotel), the hotel is clean and the staff are very friendly. The road to the beach is hardly worth mentioning - there are good sun beds available with staff on hand with towels all day. There are several lovely local restaurants which are worth visiting. Final mention for the spa at the hotel, I know you can get very cheap massages outside the hotel but if you get the chance you really should have a treatment in the spa,it is absolutely beautiful and worth that little bit extra. Special thanks to Robin, the GM who was so very helpful even though it was his day off!

We read fantastic reviews about the service , kids activity centre and the resort, and it definitely scored in the activity centre, but nothing extra ordinary on the other two fronts, specially after the fantastic stay at Pullman Bangkok, we had great expectations from Sofitel Krabi. Checkin was great, but a lot of their staff did not have all info as they claimed to have recently joined. Communication was a real issue as English is not understood v well. To start with, we were not informed that their shuttle is a paid service and it's not mentioned anywhere legible either as we kept waiting for a return and if we knew we wld simply have taken another means. Must mention, they did not charge us for the same due to the miscommunication . We ate at the White Lotus their Thai, Indian restaurant, excellent food, great service one day, the next day we had to wait 45 mins, inspire of 2 reminders as our 5 yr old was starving, not v nice. Their Italian restaurant was ok, took us 5 mins to explain Tabasco ! The Explorer Bar was good, so was their Pool side, but wouldn't advice for their Wed nite Thai buffet.... The Hong Island trip was great, also enjoyed their great tai chi and other programmes, v gd. Our daughter had a great time at their activity centre, must commend the staff there. In all we had a good stay but not v pleasant as desired. They should have complimentary wifi in this age and time, everything is an extra at this hotel. The in room tea bags did not have green tea which is provided everywhere, it was not filled up on use, so had to call for it, the service at the pool is v inadequate, specially if u r not near the bar, one has to keep walking to the bar to be served, def not 5 star, inadequately staffed and even though they have it on their lips the bonjour and swasdee kha, most of the times it's robotic, few times genuine. There is a v nice restaurant outside! Simanta, with great food, better cutlery than the hotel , great massage too, small but great pricing. The cups are not ergonomical in use.... Must mention we had a great view in the room, classy lights, nice bath room, some bath salt next to the tub would be a great addition. That's all!

We are a family of four with a two-year old and a four-year old. We very much enjoyed our three-day stay at the Sofitel and would recommend it to other families.

The pool was never crowded, the kids' club was wonderful and had lots of in-and-outdoor facilities to keep the little ones amused for hours, and the hotel offered a good range of activities for adults too: yoga, aquarobics, mountain biking, pilates etc. The gym is conveniently located next-door to the kids club. The beach is across a road but there were always guards there to safely get us across so that was no problem.

The breakfast buffet had a lot to choose from and they had a good children's menu.

A few things to note though:

- If you don't want the children to be fed or to be put in front of a DVD at kids' club, let the staff know. After leaving ours there for an hour while getting dinner organised, we found ours lounging in front of the TV and full of chocolate just before dinner: not what we had in mind...

- The hotel charges a hefty fee for extra beds and cots even for small children. It all adds up!

- If you choose to dine in your room, there is only one chair to sit on (this was in a standard room, pool facing) so you have to use either an upholstered lounge chair, a footstool, or drag the garden furniture from the balcony (or if you have two kids: all of the above!)

- Service in the restaurants is very slow and room service even more so: plan your kids' meals at least one hour before you actually want to eat to avoid ending up with children who are cranky/already asleep by the time your food appears.

- Internet in the room is 250 Baht ++ per day. Always disappointing when hotels can't offer this service for free.

- TV channels are limited, no kids' entertainment at all.

- There is a good tour company on the beach for going by longtail to Hong Island (paradise before 10am, horribly overrun after that) and many other spots near Krabi.
