We had an 11 night stay here over the Christmas and New Year holiday and already plan to return. I should agree with most of the other recent reviewers that the staff, from ladies in housekeeping right through to the management, were very friendly and efficient. I couldn't really reply to some of the negative comments on the pool staff since we only ate there once and the service seemed efficient. On the other hand the staff in Hemmingway, the club lounge, deserve a special mention for for their kindness and courtesy. I have read some strong words on the breakfast service around New Year. In defence of the staff, the service at breakfast was wonderful for most of our stay, but I think the breakfast people were hit with a kind of perfect storm at New Year - the hotel was groaning at full capacity, the rooms were filled with families with children and it rained, so with no dash for the pool everyone descended on Maya restaurant at once. New Year is busy and these things happen. Hemmingway's phrase about grace under pressure was chalked up on the wall of the club lounge at the time and I think the staff members displayed this admirably.
For the rest, the place is wonderful. Someone at Sofitel has got something very right with this colonial pastiche - all dark woods and calm, fabrics, fragrances and tinkling wind-chimes. Another writer praises the cheese to which I would add charcuterie and a special word of thanks to the genius who manages to get these things to this corner of the world with the taste still in them. The rooms are spacious and restful, the trip to Hong Island is well worthwhile, a baby elephant puts in the odd appearance by the pool, the massaman curry at the White Lotus is a surprising treat, and many of the staff seem genuinely happy and friendly.
We did some scuba diving which the hotel arranged for us with Kon-Tiki in Krabi and I should advise anyone who is interested in diving or even snorkeling, to do these same.

We arrived at the Sofitel in Krabi after a horrible experience at the Sheraton Krabi, down the street. We immediately noticed the difference between the level of service and management, once at the Sofitel. The front desk staff are quick and efficient, and are also speak English quite impressively. We didn't want to risk booking a standard room after our experience at the Sheraton, so we booked the Prestige Suite, which was beyond massive (similar in size to our entire New York City apartment). There are GREAT perks to booking a suite, and if you are able to, I HIGHLY recommend it. Booking suites entitle you to free wifi in all public areas, including the pool and lobby area, two free pieces of laundry per day and unlimited access to the hotel lounge which offers all day non-alcoholic beverage service, all day snacks and the best part are the cocktails and hors d' oeuvres they serve between the hours of 5:00 to 6:30PM. While enjoying evening cocktails we had the pleasure of meeting the General Manager, Robyn Deb, who was beyond professional and truly takes pride in his job and his property. He upgraded us to the Opera Suite, which had direct access to the swimming, private living room, huge bathroom with standing shower and jacuzzi. The breakfast buffet is amazing with tons of variety including juices, freshly made roti, fluffy pancakes and waffles and an artisanal cheese and meat display. I highly recommend including this in your room rate, because it does not disappoint. What does disappoint is the pool restaurant at the staff. They were extremely slow and lacked a level of service that everyone else at the hotel had. We had to ask several times for menus, silverware, to order more drinks, etc. Since this hotel offers a large pool and does not have a private beach, it would be great if they had waiters walking around the pool to take food and drinks orders--this is one of the only complaints we have of this property. The two restaurants (Italian and Thai) on site were both surprisingly delicious. I would say Sofitel is the very best option in Krabi unless you are SPLURGE and go for the Ritz Carlton Phulay Beach. We were very pleased with our stay. Be advised, that there is really not much to do in Krabi. The hotel offers a few activities, but it's really a place to just lounge by the pool as there are only a limited numbers of hotels directly on the beach.

Room Tip: If you can definitely book a suite--it comes with MANY PERKS!!

Amazing staff especially the General Manager Robin and Sam front desk manager - they really looked after us as it was our honeymoon, we arrived and felt a little flat with the booking our travel agent had made for us for the last part of our honeymoon which included Christmas day, first impressions were not great as the beach has a main road to cross before you reach it and beach is very rocky so not great for swimming, and we had a view of a large Oil Tanker from our room. So we let the above chaps know how we felt and although we paid to update to a suite they helped us out tremendously, the staff are a major asset to the hotel! They looked after us for the rest of our stay! The hotel pool is fab - huge!!! christmas day we went and found a long tail boat and asked them how much to take us all day to a private island with food, beer, sparking wine, fins/snorkels, fishing rods, bbq all provided. They looked after us like royalty the next day - we paid them a large deposit and were placing trust in them they would return the next day, but they went and bought all the supplies for our Xmas day. We went to Hong Island and deep sea fishing, swimming in the lagoon, we had an island that only became an island when the tide went out all to ourselves on Xmas day, and the chap cooked all our fresh food on the BBQ for us. We had an amzing day! I highly recommend doing this anyway - they really look after you out there. Sofitel was faultless-thank you for making our honeymoon perfect also for making such a great effort for Christmas in the hotel. Also only a 15 minute drive to Ao Nang - wow you gotta go out there its brilliant restaurants and bars are wonderful!

So basically if you are traveling to this area of Krabi, you have two choices, the Sheraton or Sofitel. I didn't go to the Sheraton, but our friends were there for one night, were so appalled by the rooms they checked out and checked in at the Sofitel. Apparently the rooms are filthy and fraught of cockroaches. The best part of Sofitel are the rooms and resort amenities, however, the service is lackluster (and that's an understatement). Particularly appalling service at the White Lotus and Poda Pool Bar. I had dinner at Poda twice and each time was memorable (in a bad way). Staff hardly speak english and when they do something wrong they really pretend to not understand you. In fact, all around the staff were less than helpful.

The beach is small and across the street. However, Id definitely recommend doing day trips to the surrounding islands. That's where the best beaches are, anyways. The Sofitel does have nice rooms for the $$$, just don't expect good service. If you go in with that expectation, you should be fine!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the beach or pool have the best views. Ask for third floor.

Dramatic lobby and good first impression with welcome drinks and scented wet towels: a nice touch after a flight from Bangkok and a long taxi ride from Krabi airport. Great breakfast buffet with huge selections of high quality; including some Thai dishes. Love the tropical fruits they serve like mango, mangosteen, and litchees. Although sign in the hallway says "all day dining" the main restaurant only serves breakfast! The pool bar serves lunch up until 6 pm which could be an easy option for early dinner. The menu is quite limited, however. After 6 pm, the pool bar turns into a grilled seafood restaurant. The pool itself is very large and very enjoyable to be in. On 2 out of 3 days that we were hanging out by the pool, we had a visit from a baby elephant (4 year old) which was a big hit for kids and just about everyone. We dined twice at the Italian restaurant which was very good. Wine selections were way overpriced so we had local beers instead. We didn't try the Thai restaurant because the menu was very basic and selections limited. We found that dinner options are too limited. We decided to go to nearby Sheraton twice for dinner at their international restaurant. The beach is not particularly beautiful. This is the weak point. The Sheraton has a much nicer beach and beautiful grounds leading up to the beach. At the Sofitel, you have to cross the street to get to the beach. Very few people did during our stay and that's probably the norm. We paid for a package that includes breakfast and internet. Unfortunately, they will not give additional passwords for your multiple devices. You can only use one device at a time. There is an extra charge if you want to use your additional devices. For the high price we paid (high season), it felt like being nickel and dime. It took away from the generally good feeling we had about this hotel. The services were great in general. The staff were polite and quick to respond to your needs and inquiry. We had no problem with our sleep. My partner's parents however, found the bed too stiff and was unable to get a good sleep. They got extra duvet covers the second and more the third night then finally they could sleep through the night. We chartered speed boat from an outside company for Phi Phi tour (1 day) and Pang Nga Bay tour (another day). The cost for each tour is about half the hotel charges. These tours are highly recommended. There is so much beauty out there just within 1 hour of boat ride.

My title says it all. The main restuarant which serves breakfast is only open for breakfast. The only option at lunch time is the pool bar.

For dinner: The Italian restaurant has to be reserved - we were turned away at 6.15pm (with two infants) as it was fully booked until 9pm (although only 4 tables were occupied at that time). The pool bar in the evening only serves a seafood buffet, and the other choice is a very expensive Thai restaurant. I spoke to the F&B manager on the evening of being turned away but all i received was a 'sorry' we should have let you have a table (yes, we would have been out in 1hr) . We ended up getting room service most nights. I have never experienced a hotel of this size which has a pretty isolated location not having a better choice of dining. We tried to book the Italian restaurant another night at 7pm ony to be called back to be told it was full until 8.30pm....surely this tells the hotel that they need a better approach to their F&B service.....

Besides that, we had issues with constantly being told no highchairs were available....yet after insisting they find some 4 would turned up. Staff appeared slightly lazy in doing things, felt like you always had to insist or ask for management before they took action.

On a positive note, the kids club facilities were good and the pool was great...although they could do with a few more loungers on the grassed areas. The maid service was also prompt and efficient.

This is our first time back to thailand in 22 years, somethings changed but the friendly nature of the Thai people is still very much there. It is true they do not want to say no I.e. You have to ask the right questions :). Some people might expect a more proffesional and trained staff in a five star hotel, you can still sense the fatalistic Thai way of thinking in the way the staff operates bars and restaurant a bit unstructured but they are real charming and very helpful.
We stayed over new years eve with our daughter which means we booked a larger room that included the use of the lounge Hemmingway, that was a golden gem. Selfishly I don't want everyone to book it because than the lounge might be over crowded next time we are there but I have to recommend it.

The arrangements for the new years eve party was really good, food tables etc. However the entertainment was not really what a seasoned western traveler would be looking for. The did it the Asian way let's party ! Music way too load and quite frankly the singing was more out of tone than in tone, honestly unbareable. We actually left for an hour, we were not alone in doing so. But great seafood and fireworks and really nice people made the evening for us anyhow.

We enjoyed our stay and would come back, I agree with other comments on that the road just outside the hotel wasn't very nice to walk on and the roadside looked like crap but if you did take a strol there were actually some really good restaurants. Looked like nothing, typical Thai, but the food and service outstanding as soon as you sat down. We actually left our favorite snack place the lounge Hemmingway and went for one of these mere holes in the walls called Simanta on more than occasion, worth the effort.

If you do come to this sofitel please do not just take the 10 min Boat ride to Hong island, spend some more and do the more extensive and private trip to phi phi islands, snorkel on several places, enjoy first class lunch on the beach at bamboo Island, have a beer in the very busy and over crowded phi phi island just to feel the pulse.
