The first thing that strikes you about Nakamanda is that it is not crowded. True some of the villas are situated along the path to the swimming pool and dining area but we were lucky to have been given Villa 1801 which is in a corner. In fact this and 1901/2 are the most isolated with no passerby overlook.

It is also the only place in Thailand that I know of that charges you for everything tax/service charge inclusive. So you do not have to add 17% to everything as in other places. They also do not charge for room service - the menu is as extensive as at their single dining outlet - the prices no different. We were too lazy to go down to the "Kitchen", as their dining outlet is called, and had two superb dinners with all the trimmings on our own little terrace.

We will certainly make it back there next year.

  • Liked — The beds were super soft and our villa super private
  • Disliked — The aircon blows onto the bed - can get uncomfortably cold.

My wife and I have just spent 10 nights at the Nakamanda and enjoyed it immensely. We stayed in a Sala Villa which was both spacious and extremely comfortable. The staff were friendly and very attentitive, nothing was too much trouble. Immediately outside the accommodation there are a couple of restaurants and an Irish Pub but only a 800m walk you come to the Plaza where a greater choice of restaurant is available plus a few shops. Taxi's were, in my opinion a bit pricey, from the hotel therefore recommend trying a couple of places opposite where a bit haggling will bring the price down.
All in all a beautiful resort in a quiet location but easily accesible to stunning islands and the tourist resort of Ao Nang.

A nice small place with less than forty rooms. Apart from the three villas (the Jacuzzi villas are recommended) the rooms are localised in 'Salas' i.e. one or two (most of them) storeyed small houses. The lower level has basically no view other than towards the outside walkways, and more importantly, whoever walks on these can look into your room. The rooms have large windows on three sides, so your room is pretty exposed! Hence, choose the upper level rooms on these houses or keep the curtains down.

The toilet section of these rooms is not ventilated and otherwise open. The AC-outlet is situated right above the bed which might be disturbing if you need to run it when asleep. Internet is complimentary, also in your room (WiFi) if within reach of one of the routers.

The staff are most helpful and go a long way to secure your needs. The morning/lunch staff at the 'Kitchen' definitively can be improved upon. Most staff at this restaurant are male and the restaurant and guests would very likely profit from changing this gender ratio.

Overall this hotel has adopted a policy to try to keep the guests business within the hotel, having a moderate price level on all services provided rather than overcharging as most luxury hotels. This is most commendable!

The pool is fine and beautifully situated just by the sea shore, which in itself is very nice and very secluded. Around the corner lies a long white beach that stretches for a couple of miles also past the Krabi Sheraton.
By the way - do not walk on the slippery rocks when the tide is out! I wonder how many injure themselves each year? The hotel does unfortunately not provide a warning sign. If you take a boat tour the staff will however meet you on the return landing with a fresh drink and towels - very pleasant!

We tried also the spa, at a reduced rate and this is definitively to be recommended.
For those that do not know Thailand that well; Always start your vacation with a manicure and pedicure treatment, then have a few massages (e.g. starting with feet and legs) during your stay. It does not come better and more affordable than in Thailand.

The guests you will meet here are mainly couples 30 +/- 5 years that do not really seek to interact with others. No disturbing music.

In conclusion, this is a small quite hotel where you can enjoy a high degree of privacy and good service at a reasonable, although not too low, price.
Probably the ideal honeymoon place.
If you want to spend much more money and get much less, go to the Rayavadee!

When we first arrive at the Nakamanda, it just seem like any other boutique hotels.. But after we slept through the night and we settled in nicely, Nakamanda seem to grow more beautiful by the hour...Its like a quiet, unassuming little creature...This place is indeed so quiet and peaceful that we can hear crickets and water driping in the water pipes at night.. Even the sea that seemed so rocky and uninviting became so beautiful when the tide came in the next day.. the little fishermen long tails were lovely. There is this little island that obstructs the entire sea view in front of the Nakamanda, but it is not a major concern as the view is still magnificant. If you expect white, soft sandy beaches with clear turquiose sea, this place may not be for you.
The breakfast offer a decent selection of western and thai food. The coffee is acceptable though not fantastic. For lunch, we ate at this quaint little beach hut beside the Sheraton.(turn left at the Nakamanda beach, it is only abt 8 mins away.. the walk along the beach is extremely therapeutic..) This beach restuarant serves the best deep dried squid with garlic and pepper! wash that down with ice cold Thai beer..wow! My boyfriend and i ate so much - 6 main dishes, 3 plates of rice, 2 coconuts, and 4 bottles of water- at very reasonable prices..There is also a good restuarant outside the Nakamanda by the main road- Mother's House..as usual we stuff ourselves with food again -delicious and authentic Pat thai noodles and Rat Na noodles! We did have one lunch at the hotel as we were by the pool, it was only average..
Now to the spa - i think Naga spa is one of the best spa i ever had ( having been to a couple ard the world in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore ..) The ambience of the spa again bearing the Nakamdana peace and quiet trademark. The spa lady - though she cannot speak English - is warm and accomodating and also gives above average massage.. I have very sensitive skin and as i may be allergic to each treatment, they gave me ample time to test out each treatment concoction on my arms for 15 mins before commencing..and patiently explained to me what each concoction contains... a smattering of ' tomotoes..honey...milk' . The only thing that may need some adjustment here is the bright bright treatment room..it will be a little more cosy if the spa rooms were dimmer...I had the Sense package, it was on 30% discount.. very very reasonable prices for 2 hours of heavenly bliss!
The Nakamanda bedroom, though not ultra luxurious, serves us well.. We love the His and Her washing basin and of cos the little sala terrace where we lazed during the day.. However, it would be nice if the room is fitted with some proper reading lights for bed time reading and bigger television...But then again, who will spend much time with the TV on a romatic getaway..so there is no real issue here...
Overall..the best parts abt the hotel : Lovely pool/lovely view if you are not the white.sandy beach type/quiet and peaceful/terrific spa/good conceirge service/good food within reach/reasonable rates
Some cons (but not really major cons either..) - Dimmer spa rooms/steps to get to anywhere in the hotel/small old tv/no reading lights in room
We will definitely return to Nakamanda!

The Nakamanda is a fabulous hotel in a superb location. [I'm afraid my review might be a slighty biaised by the fact that we had stayed in a couple of other hotels which were outstanding beforehand (so the bar had been set high!). This is a good hotel, but it could be excellent with just a little tiny bit more attention to detail! ]

We arrived just before high season was due to start, and being super critical we felt that the hotel was a little tired in places. A lick of paint (and/or a more intense clean) and a tidy of the garden areas would have definitely improved our first impressions of the hotel. To clarify, the rooms were very clean, but there were hand prints on the walls of our room, and tea/coffee had been splashed on the door frames (all that was needed were for these to have been wiped off, or a touch up with some paint)

Nevertheless, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and went on excursions (speed boat trips to Phi Phi, elephant trekking, scuba diving (with Manta Point Dive Center) and a long boat trip to Hong Island) - all of which were well organised and excellent.

The service was on the whole excellent, but I from time to time we felt that the staff could have been a little more friendly. Initially they seemed a little bit formal and even perhaps a bit surly, and service was quite slow but they seemed to get more friendly and accommodating towards the end of our stay which helped us to warm to the hotel more.

In the first part of our stay breakfast was a menu based service, which then switched to a buffet style breakfast (which was extensive, varied and good, and allows you to try things you perhaps otherwise wouldn't, but on the flip side inevitably some of the food was getting cold by the time we got to it!). The menu style was better from that point of view. Noodles are delicious when it's fresh out of a pan, but not so great once it's cooled down. Dinner was excellent and we loved the Loy Krathong Festival evening which was absolutely incredible.

We also ate at a restaurant between the Nakamanda and the Sheraton which served great food - a good spot for lunch) they also do excellent thai massages on the beach too for just 250 Baht! We also visited a few of the bars and another restaurant on the road-side, which was also very good!

The views from this hotel are stunning, and look out over a bay which is ever changing with the tides. If you are looking for white sandy beaches which go on for miles, this isn't for you, but the landscape is simply breathtaking (the beach is sandy, with some rocks etc - so fine if you are happy to do a little bit of clambering). There are a few hotels along this stretch, but if you are looking for nightlife, this isn't the hotel for you. It's quiet and serene, but you can take a taxi for more action if that's what you're after.

There are loads of steps here, so this could be tricky if you have a push chair, or find steps a bit of a trial this wouldn't be the right hotel for you.

I'm so excited to write this review because they deserve a true review from me. My husband, my little precious and I spent 5 days 4 nights at Nakamanda last week. It was a fabulous holiday for the 3 of us from accommodation, the superb services and the place itself. And 5 days 4 nights is just not enough!

Let me start with the resort.

We were picked up at the airport and it took us about 40 minutes to reach the resort. We were given cold towel and mineral water when we were in the car. By the way it was a new Camry. Check in process is very good. We were greeted by the Chief Concierge-Rit and he suggested some programs for us during our stay. And we decided to join the 4 islands tour. Trust me....it was superb and the islands are so beautiful!

The whole ambiance in the resort is so relaxing, comfortable and we are kind of having the whole resort by ourselves during our stay due to the low season. We had our lunch and dinner in the resort and we still find the food at The Kitchen (name of the restaurant) is the best. Don't be confused by other reviews mentioning the price is high. It is not and you will find that even the restaurants outside or at Ao Nang town also charging about the same price. But in terms of taste and quality, they are not compatible with The Kitchen. So we decided to have all our meals in the restaurant during the last day of our stay. We went to Ao Nang seafood and Koh Bua for our dinner. They are good but not as good as The Kitchen. If you want really good Thai food or Western food, The Kitchen is your best choice. The chef also baked nice cookies!

The Sala Villa we had is partially sea facing. Although there are many stairs in the resort and may not be so friendly to elder people. But you can always ask for the villa located at the ground floor. It's not a problem at all. Spacious room and great bathroom! I love the bath tub that you can have a hot bath and looking into the sky. Isn't that romantic.....

Our room rate inclusive of breakfast and kid is free. Some reviews mentioned that choices are limited for breakfast, lunch and dinner if you eat at the restaurant everyday. But we don't feel that cos there are lots of things you can keep on trying. E.g. fried noodles, fried rice, rice congee, western breakfast, or even sometimes if you request item not in the menu, they will try to fulfill. We love their boiled eggs (4 mins). So tasty and so delicious that we had it every day. We request BBQ chicken for our girl's dinner n they did it so good. My girl finish everything on her plate!

Now let's talk about their spa. Yes, you can find some spa outside the hotel but we dare not try due to the hygiene issues and the environment. We had our spa at the resort for 2 days. They even took care our daughter for us while we enjoy the spa. My little princess was so happy and showed us the nail&toe color they put for her!

We also went to Krabi town for a half day shopping with Rit. He is so kind to offer us the trip at a very good deal. We had a wonderful shopping at the outlet village. But you must remember to ask the staff to fill up the VAT refund form so you can get your refund at the Krabi international airport. We asked them a few times and they keep saying there isn't VAT refund at the Krabi Int'l Airport. This is not true! So please make sure you did it. We were so angry with them and lodged a complain at the VAT refund service counter.

Rit also took us to the famous fish noodles shop at Krabi town. The noodles is delicious. Rit is just so professional, friendly and kind. He even entertain our girl while we shop. What else can I say about his service!

We also went to the Ao Nang night market but there wasn't much to see. So I would suggest that if you want to do some shopping...go to outlet village, big C or even Tesco.
But if you do not fancy shopping...then just relax yourself at the resort or go for islands hopping.

I am so glad that I made the right choice. At first I was struggling whether to stay at Sheraton or Nakamanda. Because there were lots of review about Sheraton but don't let those affect your decision. We walked to the beach in front of Sheraton from Nakamanda and is just a short walk about 10mins. After the walk, I can tell you....go with Nakamanda!! You will be amazed and experience the true thai friendliness. I want to thank you all the staff at the Nakamanda for making our holiday a memorable one and we will be back with our other family members!

We stayed here in July 2009 for three nights on a full board basis in a basic sala villa.
The resort collected us from our other hotel and had a day room ready for us as we arrived at 10am. The villas are big and spacey and very clean. The bathrooms are very big and have a massive bath big enough for two people with a glass roof so you can sit in it at night and watch the stars!
We were full board and the choices were good but I think if we were staying for any longer it would have become a bit repetitive but the breakfast was great and a nice change to have a menu rather than traditional mass catered buffet style breakfasts which all taste the same!
The pool area was massive and as it was monsoon season, there were hardly any other guests so we had the whole place to ourselves on most days. The weather was great every day - no rain at all!
Views from the pool, beach and pool area are stunning.
Staff were friendly and courteous - maybe a bit lapse in the evenings but no major issues here.
On the whole, for the £400 we paid for three nights plus all our meals we felt we had great value for money and hardly spent a penny otherwise - the drinks are very well priced and a nice touch is that everything includes the standard 17% extra so no nasty suprises when we had our final bill (unlike at the Amari vogue where everything had the 17% added on afterwards!)

I'd def recommend this hotel. The staff are good, the rooms very nice and the whole surrounding is excellent. We never left the resort in three days - we didn't need to!
