“A lovely 'boutique' style hotel”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

Just returned from 10 night stay at the Beyond Resort after travelling from Vietnam and Bangkok and as the 'relaxing' part of our travels. After reading several reviews we were a little concerned about this hotel. Please, don't be worried if you are planning or have already planned your stay here. This is a lovely hotel and on a beautiful beach with stunning views. Service is fine; a little slow sometimes but, hey, you're on holiday so relax and take a chill pill.

Check in was fast and efficient. However, we had booked into the cottage rooms and make no mistake, these rooms are without doubt the 'poor relation'. They are situated away from the main building, close to the main road, and bare no resemblance to the Beyond Resort. The rooms are spacious but poorly fitted. I could have tolerated that but the location was the main issue for us. We spoke to Oliver in reception and negotiated a room upgrade to the main building. This added a hefty chunk to our bill but was worth, in our opinion, every penny. Once settled into our new rooms (the next day) our holiday 'began' for us.

Other reviewers had mentioned poor selection at breakfast. I can only assume that they must eat breakfast at the 'Ritz'!! There was as much, if not more, choice than any of the hotels I have stayed in, and I have stayed in smart hotels all over the world. There is something to suit every taste. We had lunch several times in the pooside restaurant and it was of good quality. There is a nice restaurant on the beach towards the Sheraton which has a cooling breeze during the day. We had lunch there several times and the food and service was always good.

One word of caution (and I think the hotel need to make this clear) - wine is not included in the 'happy hour' deals. We did not realise this and no one bothered to point it out whenever we ordered wine! Our bill reflected this! Wine is generally very expensive in Thailand so check the prices (about £30 for a bottle of very average chardonney). There is a 7-11 near the hotel so stock up with your favourite tipple and put it in the fridge in your room. We had pre-dinner drinks on the balcony every evening before going out. The hotel don't seem to mind this and will even give you limes and ice if you ask nicely (and give a little tip now and then).

The pool area is beautiful and we did not have a problem getting beds. I loved the pool; it was wonderful to sit in the jucuzzi and read a book - heaven.

If you prefer to eat away from the hotel, as we did, there are plenty of restaurants on the main road in front of the hotel. I can highly recommend 'Coconut' and 'Mothers'. Both service and quality of food was very good in both these restaurants. If you want a change get a taxi (negotiate the return fare) into Ao Nang. We were told this resort is a 'dump' but that's a bit harsh; it's just very busy and comprises one long road full of restaurants/clubs etc. I would say, more for the young than us 50 somethings! It made a change and there is a good selection of goods to take back home.

Take a trip on a long-tail boat in front of the hotel - it's not expensive and well worth it. Hong Island and Pappaya Island are the closest and beautiful.

Given all the pro's and cons I would happily go back to this hotel tomorrow and as I sit here writing this review and looking out of the window at the rain and sleet, I wish I was there now!

Room Tip: Avoid the cottages!

Dear Gill,

Many thanks for your recent stay with and for having taken the time to post an extensive review.

We have started an upgrade of the Cottage rooms. This includes partitions on the balcony to offer more privacy, additional lighting in the recessed ceiling and replacing the existing shower curtain with a glass door and glass panel. This will give the room and the bathroom a much better feel.
I am sorry to read about the Happy Hour incident. The 50% discount during Happy Hour is applicable to all beverages on the drink list which does not include the wines. Please accept my apologies for this. I will ensure the staffs explain this to our guests.

Thank you for all your kind comments about our resort and also for the detailed description of the surrounding area.

Should your travel plans bring you back to Thailand, please do feel to contact us directly and we will be pleased to assist with the necessary arrangements. We would be delighted to welcome you back to Beyond Resort Krabi in the future.

Kind regards,
Claude & the Beyond Resort Krabi Team

we spend ten days in this resort and it was very nice. The staff are freindly and many speak so much english thet you can explain what you need.
We stayed in a villa and after having a problem in the first one we had no problem getting another room.
The guest relation agent Oliver was very nice and helpful and present moust of the day. The hotel manager were also seen all over the grounds,

The villas provide you with toiletrees like bodysoap and shampoo and bodylotion, and nice fluffy towels, you also get towels for the beach.

We have nothing but good to say about this resort and can recormend it

Room Tip: we had a villa first up and then we mooved down but both were okay

We chose this hotel after an onsite inspection, as the one we were staying was not a beach resort. The first night we stayed at a cottage room. Reaaally basic in all aspects (room size, bathroom and almost not existing amenities). To be honest it didn't worth the price we paid (almost 100 Euro).

The next day our travel agent back home found us a garden villa costing much less than the cottage room, so we immediately moved into this room type and we didn't regret it. It was big, more amenities, nice view and close to the beach. A real catch.

The sea and the pool are just AMAZING. We enjoyed every moment in the clear waters and when that was not possible we ...had to move the the impressive pool.

Thought the breakfast is average and the servive - especially around the pool - which is the epicenter of the resort life, is at least poor. Most of the times we had to go to the bar and order. There were at least 5-6 empolyees who were either talking to each other or looking at their phones but nobody bothered to walk along the pool area and see if anyone wanted something. Another amazing example: 4 ouf of our 6 nights stay, the pool shower was "decorated" with 1 shampoo and 1 shower gel that a guest used infront of me and NOBODY by the staff cared for 4 days and nights to remove it.

Bottom line, I would go back because of the location, the superb waters and the pool.

Room Tip: 1. There is a great Thai restaurant on the beach. Just turn left on the beach exit and you will find...

Please be assured that we continue to work hard to improve the service standards. We have more new staff in the restaurant. If you are looking for beautiful beach, swimming pool, great views with 4 star service in a tranquil settin then this is the place to book!! From the moment we arrived we knew we had booked the right place. The reception is on the 5th floow with stunning views. We were greeted by the manager as well as a much needed cool drink. We booked a cottage room which is the cheapest available. The room was fine, big size and a large bed. We had a fridge with complimentary water replensihed daily. A large, clean bathroom and working aircon which was quiet. The hotel also provides towels for the pool/beach area. The cottage rooms are a bit far away from the main hotel but they are closest to the entrance which was great for us as we had most of our meals outside of the hotel.

The pool and beach area is clean and with many loungers and umbrellas. You can have a massage at the hotel by the beach but the price is quite high. Just next door to the hotel is a local massage place with much cheaper rates, and it seemed everyone knew about it.

The breakfast offers a large selection from Thai dishes, fresh fruit, cereals, pastries, eggs, bacon etc. Definitely something for everyone and very good too! Meals at the hotel can be a bit pricey for Thailand but there are many restaurants nearby.

Ao Nang is around 20 minutes drive away from the hotel so close enough for a night out but not too close!

Very idylic resort and perfect for a a week stay!

Having read previous trip advisor reviews and being aware that this was a fairly new resort, we decided to give it a chance anyway as it looked pretty from the photos, and a lot of people can be overly fussy and critical. Unfortunately, pretty was all the Beyond Resort Krabi had to offer, and all the negative reviews were spot on. Our whole time there was characterised by frustration and let downs, due to the appalling service unworthy of a supposedly 4* hotel. There was even a letter on our dressing table when we arrived in our room basically saying that as the resort was new they were having some teething issues with the service and to please bear with them, so even by their own admission, service isn’t as it should be. From what I’ve read the resort has been open more than 6months now anyway so this shouldn’t still be a valid excuse.

Our problems began shortly after check in, when we noticed long splits in the wooden door to our villa, the door having apparently warped and weathered in the short space of time since it was built. These cracks ran all the way though the door letting in the light from outside, as the photo shows. We mentioned this to reception, who instead of dealing with the problem, gave us a slip of paper with an email address on, and advised us to send an email to the engineers ourselves who would come take a look at it. This then prompted us to ask how we could get wifi access. We were told there was a 400bht charge for the duration of our stay, which grated, as this is supposedly a 4* resort, and even road-side shack type restaurants and massage parlours widely offer free wifi across Thailand. Several days later we learned from tripadvisor reviews that this charge only applied if you wanted high speed wifi, in your room, and wifi was in fact free in public areas in the resort, which we hadn’t been informed of, and we would not have paid extra for wifi access in our rooms had we been aware of this. We mentioned this to the manager who said he would remove this charge from our bill. When we checked out however, it was still on there, and we had to ask reception again to remove it. We also decided during our stay to go horse riding and, as this was not an excursion the hotel offered themselves, figured it would be ok to ask if they would mind making the call to book this for us in case the riding centre didn’t speak good English. This request was refused by the staff.

In general, the staff seemed to have no concept of what 4* service means. For example, it is necessary to sign a bill (annoying and unjustifiably always containing a 10% service charge already added on) every time you order a drink by the pool/have something to eat. We had a lunch deal one day that included a dessert, and our main courses arrived so long apart that I had finished mine completely before my partner’s had even made an appearance, which was interesting because it was only a club sandwich and was the lunch option on offer that day so you’d think they’d have plenty ready to go. Having spent so long waiting for our mains, as soon as we had both finished, we wandered back to the pool, forgetting about the dessert that was supposed to be included. One of the staff then chased and shouted for us across the pool and we had to walk back to the bar area to sign the bill. Upon noticing on the bill that we should’ve had the dessert which they hadn’t given us and pointing this out, the waitress returned with a plate of fruit, shoved it at us, without any cutlery or a napkin, for us to carry back to our sunloungers ourselves. One day, the bar even ran out of coconuts, which is almost an achievement in Thailand. It took 10minutes from ordering one to having someone return to tell us this. We did wonder why they couldn’t have simply bought one from the place next door on the beach at a fraction of the price the resort charges and give us those instead, as they would’ve still made a profit. As the management has previously admitted in response to another review, they get massage girls in from the local parlours across the road where the same massage is offered for a fraction of the price when they need extra staff in the spa, so if they’re happy to do this with actual human beings you’d think it’d occur to them to do the same with coconuts too. Whilst on the subject of the bar, I was happy to find that the bar offers frozen cocktails, puzzlingly from a separate menu you have to request if you’re fortunate enough to know from other guests it exists – the staff never give it you along with the main drinks menu. On another occasion, we asked reception what time the evening shuttle to Ao-Nang was, and whether we just turn up in the lobby at the pick up time, which they confirmed. When we arrived, we discovered that the shuttle bus was full, and we were supposed to have booked a space – none of which had been mentioned to us earlier when we asked. After a bit of shuffling around by the other guests on the bus we managed to squeeze in but again we were caused unnecessary stress and annoyance at a time when we were paying good money to relax and be looked after. As others have noted the English levels of the staff is poor – most bar girls/waiters in Ao Nang had far superior language skills so I cannot understand why it was not possible to find better qualified staff at Beyond Krabi.

The one saving grace of the hotel was that the pool was well designed, warm, with shallow areas to wade through/sit in, sunken jaccuzzi areas etc. The rooms however were incredibly badly designed, bad lighting in the bathroom as other reviewers have noted, no plug sockets anywhere near the bed which means people using their mobile phones as alarm clocks and wishing to charge them overnight (i.e. everyone nowadays) has to get up as soon as the the alarm sounds off and walk across the room to wherever the nearest plug socket was to turn it off instead of having the phone to hand by the bed. Not the most pleasant wake up experience. The mattress is placed on a wooden platform much wider than the mattress itself, which makes getting in and out of bed really awkward, and we did bang ourselves on the wooden ledge several times. Finally, there was no master light switch anywhere in the room, which meant every bedtime involved an irritating trek to and fro multiple switches across the room to turn all the lights off.

Breakfast was average at best, nothing much to look forward to. The location of the hotel, while picturesque, is quite far from Ao Nang so unless you pay for a taxi or risk the shuttle service you could end up feeling a bit bored and trapped.

None of these problems individually would’ve been much of an issue, but altogether demonstrate how the general service levels made for a very unhappy stay. I was eager to leave by the end of my stay, would recommend everyone to avoid this resort. The Sheraton and Nakamanda (both next door either side) would be much better options. From previous management responses I’ve read here, I’m anticipating that they will say that some of these issues weren’t raised with them at the time so they could’ve rectified them, but we did raise several of them and there comes a point when you just can’t be bothered to keep complaining. It’s annoying when a problem occurs and even more inconvenient to complain about it afterwards, and paying guests are there to enjoy themselves, not to be in effect free mystery shoppers/guinea pigs there to provide feedback on teething issues to help improve things.

All,

This is probably the GEM in Nong Thale area, if you are looking for a property in a peaceful and tranquil location – this is THE place to go.

Here is how I detail it out!

1) Quality of rooms – Amazing, a delight. If you want to experience luxury. Please book Deluxe Sea-facing rooms. I got a one on 4th floor. Clear and unobstructed views of the sea. Good Morning with a cup of coffee & Good Night with a glass of wine/beer

2) Food & restaurant – In my package the breakfast was included, a huge variety of spread from salads to dishes. Whereas, I hardly ate any other meal here. There were a couple of options (in order of awesomeness) – Baan Thai (across the hotel), Ruem Siam (sea-side , left 10 minute walk), Mother’s House (across the hotel on the left)

3) Sightseeing/optional tours – I booked it from the hotel itself, they had a bus till the mini-port and back. 4 Island Tour & Phi Phi is a must!

4) Daily needs – Mini-mart: Yes, there is one ideally situated just outside the hotel. Frieda Laundry (across the hotel), a home-run shop, ironed clothes (what else you need)

A must to carry

1) Some extra patience, a 10 minute delay is fine as language is a huge barrier. But, we are on vacation. Just chill! But, remember they are eager to help tourists

2) Toiletries – specially!

Lastly, a special mention to the Leader of All – Claude (GM), he is always there and he is continually trying to improve the services!

I would definitely come back and just stay here!

Room Tip: Deluxe sea facing room! No questions about it! (go for 4th floor)

We stayed in a garden Villa which have big round bedrooms and a separate round shower room, really nice, the staff are so very friendly and there is a good substantial buffet breakfast. The meals at the hotel are expensive but there are plenty of restaurants outside, one in particular is just opposite the main entrance to the hotel, to the right, called Bai Tang (Banana leaf) their chicken and cashew nut is to die for. Pay 100 Bahts and a taxi or Tut tut will take you to the Sheriton where there are more restaurants, Here Le Cafe is very good with the Jazz bar opposite.
The whole holiday was totally relaxing, The pool and the beach are are so clean and inviting.
Taxi to Aonang was 1000TB return, not cheap but the hotel do a bus service from 5pm to 9pm for 200TB .
The hotel do not change the beach towels every day, they have to be put on the balcony rail to dry overnight, this needs sorting but this is our only complaint!!!!

Room Tip: The bungalows looked a little out of the way from the main facilities, the villas were excellant.
