“A true paradise; beautiful villas, lush gardens, incredible food and impeccable service.”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

It is hard to put into words how much we loved our stay at A Beach Symphony. Even before we arrived, Jan had helped me organise much of our trip; a never ending source of information and guidance. Every one of the many emails I sent were responded to, swiftly and knowledgeably.
Our villa/cottage was called Nagasarwem, an incredible dark wood structure, with a lovely veranda looking out to a palm tree filled garden and the white sand and sea beyond. The bathrooms were open air and very tastefully designed. The bedroom, blissfully air conditioned.
The pool is fantastic, refreshing and immaculately looked after. Perfect to laze away the day reading on a lounger and cooling off in the pool.
Walking on the beach and swimming in the sea were also a popular past time for us. Dolphin spotting and laughing at the crabs running in and out of the sea, whilst sitting under a palm was really quite lovely!
The service was great; non obtrusive, but always there when you need it! Such friendly and attentive staff - thank you! The food was superb, from the wonderful Kerelan dishes, to the yummy sandwiches and eggs. Chatting with the chef to decide on dinner was really useful and fun!
This is the most amazing and wonderful place I have ever stayed in - a magical experience. A huge thank you to all the staff for providing our family with an experience of a life time!

We picked a beach symphony as we wanted a few days to adjust after our long haul flight and before we started our tour of Kerala. It exceeded our expectations, with excellent food and excellent hospitality.

My wife and I stayed here a part of our honeymoon last year. It was slightly out of season (October) and we had the private pool hut for 7000rs.

Accomodation was amazing, private pool excellent, out door bathroom and shower honetmoon material but most impressive was the food and service!

Great food served on our balcony every night. Great keralan thoran, fish and prawns. Also, the beer and wine is served without a menu and prices and I was dreading getting a bill at the end - surprisingly low mark up (large beer was 150rs!).

All in all excellent and would highly recommend.

We spent the first few days of our holiday at Beach Symphony and it was the perfect way to completely relax and unwind. There was no tv or other noise. The cottage we stayed in was lovely and I was quite shocked at first to see the bathroom was outdoors, but by the second day I was feeling free and at one with the beautiful surroundings (by-the-way it is completely private!).
All the staff were lovely and nothing too much trouble. They seemed to appear when you needed something but never saw them the rest of the time. There were no restrictions of when you had to be ready for breakfast or dinner and each day the chef, Beepu, would come round and ask what we would like for dinner, and WHAT food he produced each day! It was utterly delicious! I intend to go back there for a cooking course with him, he really is their secret weapon.
The whole experience was something we were looking for to start our holiday, from there we travelled around and saw more, but we were able to properly unwind at Beach Symphony.
Thank you to Jan for recommending the houseboat cruise, Shalimar and for organising such a star driver, Saiju!

Room Tip: There were four chalets, each have something to offer.

lovely secluded luxuriously designed cottages, special staff made us feel very spoilt. Beautiful gardens and heavenly swimming pool. Delicious food served in the total privacy of your own home at Marari Beach. The beach is great, unspoilt with Dolphins to watch and fishermen. Never bothered by anyone on the beach on endless walks. Looking forward to returning. Thank you everyone.

Room Tip: Violin cottage for absolute romance - all cottages are great.

We stayed here for 4 nights and to be completely honest, this was probably the most disappointing stay of the trip.

The good:
- The cottage itself was lovely. Whoever decorated it has great taste. Loved the verandah in particular.
- Private. There are only 4 cottages on the property and the cottage we stayed in had a private garden+pool so we almost never saw other guests. We consider this a good thing.
- The beach is unspoilt and not too crowded.

The bad:
- The constant waiting. Food is brought to you whenever they feel like it so you constantly feel like you're 'on-call'. By this, I mean, lets say if you agree with the staff that lunch will be at 1p.m., you go out and sit on the verandah at lets say 12.50 p.m. (can't help it, we usually eat at 12 haha) because they might think you don't want to be disturbed. So you wait. And wait. Come 1.30-ish, someone finally walks by and asks if you're ready for lunch and then you wait again until it arrives at 1.50. Breakfast and dinner are the same. Other examples: you arrive and a staff says the manager will come by shortly to explain the place. So you don't relax and wait for 45 minutes. Then on the last night, the manager says he'll drop by after dinner to do the billing. We say sure so we wait until 10p.m. and he never turns up. So in short, it didn't REALLY feel like a holiday.

ii) On the 2nd night, a pack of wild dogs came onto our verandah and tore one of my new sandals to pieces. 40 euros gone. The breakfast staff noticed it and said he will tell the manager. No news so I told the manager myself what happened. Apparently, there's a hole in the fence. No apology and certainly no replacement/compensation. Would have been nice to get a new pair of flip flops (doesn't even have to be special, just some cheap random pair so I have something to walk in) as the resort is not exactly located in a central location.

iii) You get woken up at 6 a.m. in the morning by a church (I think). The singing/chanting/ sermon lasts til 8am. However, this was not present on our last morning.

iv) Service was a little strange. Don't get me wrong, the staff were never once rude and are quite pleasant but operationally not quite all there. Examples (other than the waiting and such): no housekeeping on the day before we checked out (also means no towels/no toilet paper etc.!), there's a menu but there's only one chef so when he is not working, you cannot order most things from the already limited menu.

On a positive note, we stayed at Vismaya (a villa also managed by Beach Symphony) at the end of our trip and we enjoyed it throughly.

Most of us dream sometimes of a resort by the beach with the sound of lapping waves and absolutely nothing to do. This is that resort. Exclusive well appointed bungalows, a chef who comes to you and sees what you want to eat that night, a pool, plenty of books: all the characteristics of the dream.

The reality however can be different. It is very hot here and there's nothing else to do (excursions are offered, but they are a bit contrived), and frankly we got a bit bored. Okay this may just be us and there's some learning for us here, and indeed everyone else seemed content to do absolutely nothing all day, but is probably is worth considering exactly what it is you want from a holiday before booking the Beach Symphony.

For us, dinner was extra, but there was nowhere else to go and it was slightly pricey, so why not just make everyone take a package? The choice of food was also fairly limited (the chef gives you a big steer), good, but limited. There is free wifi (hurrah), but it was down one of the three days we were there and everyone seemed in denial about it. This exposed a further issue here - the model is 'light touch' i.e. no reception and minimal management, but when something goes wrong it's difficult to get it sorted. The rooms don't have a phone and you are given the owners phone numbers in case of an emergency - we weren't sure this was enough given the price we were paying. This was highlighted when the car we'd booked for the airport didn't turn up and we had to resolve it.

To summarise: if this is your bag then fine, it does what it says on the can, but we left feeling that what was supposed to be a treat after a two week tour of southern India turned out to be an expensive mistake. Think what you look for in a holiday before booking.

Room Tip: There are only four!
