Stayed here for 4 nights at the end of a week in Kerala. Booked direct with Jan who was helpful and efficient, including laying on transfers from/to Cochin. We stayed in Violin cottage which is beautifully modernised and a delight to stay in. The addition of a private pool is a big plus although we used the communal pool every morning and loved that too. Its slightly disappointing that it has been necessary to screen the rear of the cottage with a plastic sheet but the outdoor shower probably demands protection from inquisitive eyes (it also allows you to sunbathe privately which is quite nice!). The room is large, the bed is comfortable and the bathroom is pleasant. The best part of our trip was the ability to dine together privately on our terrace every night. The food is excellent although the choice is fairly limited. The day bed on the terrace was great too when we wanted a break from the intensity of the sun. We had an ayurvedic treatment but were disappointed with the ambiance of the treatment room and the rather functional massage technique. The grounds of Beach Symphony open directly onto the beach which stretches for miles in each direction. We walked on the beach every morning and at sunset. It is a 'working' beach so has fishermen and their dogs every few hundred yards, and in common with many places in India the beach is also used for daily ablutions. This means you need to watch your step in the mornings and although swimming is safe, I would always choose to use the pool! In summary:

The Good - Violin cottage, the communal pool, the cooking and the quiet
The Bad - The ayurvedic treatment room
The Ugly - morning ablutions on the beach

That said, we are experienced India travellers and found our stay here extremely relaxing and would definately stay here again for a peaceful break.

My husband and I arrived on Christmas Day and stayed for 4 nights. What a special place this, created totally by Jan, Cristel and their wonderful team. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and then advised to go out to the beach for the sunset. As it was Christmas Day the beach was full of locals and it was a fantastic atmosphere.

We stayed in Khombu which is one of the 2 front cottages (and the only one with 2 bedrooms so good if you’re travelling with children). From the veranda you have a wonderful view through the sandy garden and out to the beach. The cottage was huge and beautifully decorated with wooden furniture, silk fabrics and huge cushions. There was a separate changing area with an espresso maker (a big hit with the Hubby), a gorgeous bathroom with a big double sink and a massive walk-in shower (a room in itself) which was part open to the sky. There was also a small seating area next to the bed but we always sat on the veranda - why wouldn’t you with 2 rattan loungers to relax in?

The food - well, I am still dreaming about the fish. Everything is cooked for you and the menu is chatted through in the morning with the chef. The food was some of the best we had on the whole of our 3 week India trip. The evening meal is served in a butlers tray on your veranda so you can keep going back for more as it’s certainly plentiful. It comes with 3 types of vegetables, breads and rice. Lunch can be Keralan or a sandwich or something and for breakfast the Masala omelette and Keralan pancakes were wonderful.

The pool was lovely and a good size to swim in and for other exercise you can take the bikes out or go for a walk along the beach. As mentioned in the previous review, the local fisherman just squat down anywhere (and totally in front of you) to relieve themselves and not really doing much to hide it. This isn’t ideal but Jan and Cristel (plus other property owners) are doing their best to get this stopped and let’s face it, it’s probably moré the fishermen’s beach than ours. This by no way detracts from how wonderful a Beach Symphony is, but it’s worth mentioning as it can be a bit of a shock!

The thing that strikes you about A Beach Symphony is how friendly everyone is and they so want you to have a fabulous stay with them - we definitely did and were really sorry to leave but we will be back.

We were here over the Christmas period, for two days in a beach-front cottage and then for a further two days in the cottage with its own pool (Violin). Beach Symphony is quite a magical place to stay, in terms of its location, right on the beach. The sea is warm and lovely to swim in. The cottages are beautifully-designed. The staff couldn't be more helpful - they were truly amazing. The food is absolutely delicious. The owner organised for a car to pick us up at the airport and, during our stay, for further transport to other locations. We had fun travelling by tuk-tuk (auto-rickshaw), and also borrowed bikes to cycle around the local villages. There is space to be private in the hotel's own private beach area, (and in your own pool, if you book Violin) although Marari beach itself (at the water's edge) is a public beach, so you also get the chance to see the local fishermen working. The owners have got the ambience just right: this is one of the best places we have ever stayed.

Room Tip: Violin has its own pool, but our first cottage was right at the front and had the most spectacular v...

After a gruelling 2 week trip it was delightful to spend 3 nights here. We were pampered by the charming and attentive, yet discreet staff. The villas were beautiful, especially the Violin villa with private pool. Try the Njavara Kizhi Ayurveda treatment - unlike anything I have tried! The beach was almost deserted, apart from the local fishermen (and this was high season!). The only negative was the piles of human faeces on the beach early in the morning, but these were quickly cleared away. Thoroughly recommended!

My husband and I, and our 13 year old daughter and two friends spent 3 days over Christmas in Nagaswaram cottage and Violin Cottage. The accommodation was excellent - we were in Nagaswara Cottage which was large, well furnished and appointed, and spotlessly clean. It had a wonderful open air bathroom and plunge pool. The front verandah was large and well furnished. The staff were exceptionally helpful, professional and friendly. The owners Jan and Cristel arranged for all guests to get together on Christmas Eve for a Seafood feast which was excellent (as was the food in general throughout our stay). We were able to borrow some bicycles and ride into the villages/fishermans market on the beach which was good fun. The beach, although lovely, was used as a toilet by the local fishermen which was rather unpleasant but hey, we were in India! All in all, I can't speak highly enough of the place and will definitely be going back. Thanks Jan, Cristel and all the staff

We reckoned from the web that Beach Symphony was going to be special, and it was - only four cottages, so quiet and low-key, and everything was lovely. We had Violin cottage, which is behind one of the others but is therefore more private, and the front ones don't really have much of a sea view anyway - it was some distance away, with a security fence in between. Violin is the only cottage to have its own private pool, and although tiny it was fun to have, and completely enclosed (allowing 'free' swimming!). It is also right beside the nicely presented communal pool for 'proper' swims.

Meals are served on the cottage's verandah, so are very private/intimate. Fresh fish, keralan curries, breads etc. Very nicely cooked and presented, and really very reasonably priced. The website talked of a 'butler' for the cottage, which we thought might be a bit intrusive (if luxurious), but in reality there are two or three men who serve all four cottages, and either appear magically when you want something, or can be summonsed at anytime. They are not 'on hand' all the time eavesdropping on your every move! We really didn't want to leave (and that's not something we say very often, as we like to move on to new experiences).
