“Our little piece of paradise”
Reviewed April 5, 2011

Having just returned from an intriguing tour of India, finishing our trip with diving in the Maldives, we just felt compelled to issue this Review of “A Beach Symphony” (ABS) as it is, in our opinion, one of the most relaxing and charming places we have ever stayed. With just 4 villas/ex-fisherman cottages, built in traditional Keralan style but each with subtle differences, it is our little piece of paradise, particularly as it is situated in a beautiful area of Kerala (at Mararikulam not far from Aleppey (spelt locally as “Alappuzha”). Food is fantastic particularly if you like curries. Meals are mainly Keralan-type curries but there is a choice of pasta/fish as alternatives. All meals are served “butler-style”, but referred to as “patio-service” as it is very informal, just outside of each villa which brings a charming touch to a magical place. The owners, Christel & Jan Arryn are delightful hosts and ensure that your every need is covered.
ABS is situated near the backwaters of Aleppey, adjacent to Marari beach, so a few hundred metre walk gets you onto a 20-mile plus stretch of deserted pure white sand. Over our 10-day stay we came across about half a dozen people, except for the local fishermen, during our daily beach visits which came as a complete contrast after the bustle of of the rest of India.
The local fishermen still use traditional fishing methods in long-boats. Each catch, which usually consists of thousands of small “matee” (very similar to sprats) is dried on copra mats. Catches have to be rapidly covered in light netting much to the annoyance of the local eagles who attempt to steal the catches by dive-bombing whilst the fishermen are laying out their hard-earnt bounties.
In summary our stay at ABS is relaxing and very enjoyable and we would highly recommend it but please don’t book the Violin villa when we would like it !

Room Tip: Take a long walk along the tranquil beach

It was a real treat to stay here at the end of a month-long trip to India. We loved our cottage which was beautifully designed and maintained and the staff were all helpful and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed having our meals (which were delicious) served so nicely on our terrace.

We also took advantage of the hotel tuk tuk for a couple of excursions and thought how sensible it was to spell out the costs of trips so there were no misunderstandings.

The pool area was immaculately maintained and the water wonderfully warm.

Our only negative comment is that the beach isn't clean once you walk beyond the front of the hotel and we wouldn't recommend swimming in the sea.

This isn't a place for those who want the people and facilities of a large resort but it's perfect for those who want quiet, charming surroundings, privacy, and wonderful but unobtrusive staff.

First off: if you're expecting the standard huge luxury resort with your lounge chair and beach towel at the ready, you will be disappointed. This place is something special. Jan and Christel, who proved themselves excellent hosts during our stay and extremely helpful in solving some planning issues we had, bought a few cottages and transformed them in charming and luxurious rooms. Our 'Violin Cottage' had a private pool, which was very nice. Since Jan and Christel are themselves European, they know what Europeans find important, namely a large outside space. And we needed the enormous covered veranda, since we had two full days of rain during our stay. The food is served at your cottage, which is a special experience. I would recommend them, since there is really no way that you can eat out, to include the food in the price (all-in arrangements). One reviewer noted the habit of the locals to do their business in a hole in the sand. Yes they do, remember, this is India! But first of all, the beach is not part of the resort, and that makes it so fantastic: it is part of the village, people work here. If you really want to sunbathe, the hotelgronds themselves are very clean, and there are comfortable hammocks everywhere. Enjoy your stay! (Jan en Christel: bedankt voor alles, jullie gastvrijheid en de gezellige borrel op onze veranda in de regen)

Well I just landed less then 24h ago from our trip in India and here I am already commenting on A BEACH SYMPHONY.

Where to start ?
One word: THANK YOU
You all made our stay truly special.

If you plan on visiting Kerala and are looking for a incredible stay then Beach Symphony is for you.

It's a little piece of heaven on earth.
4 cottages on the beach, each one is different and wonderful. (we stayed in the Nagaswaram).

There is no restaurant, your food is served on your own private terrace. From every meal to any Lassi, eveything is incredible good and so fresh. You don't feel like you are choosing from a menu, you feel as if it has been cooked just for you. (Binu you rock and I will defenetly try to make the Chapati you teached us).

The service is amazing, yet very discreet, you can tell they are genuinly nice and there to help. Anything you want or ask will be provided with a big and warm smile (thank you Dominic and Richard).

The management is great too, very effective and available to answer all your questions. (thank you Ian & Christel, thank you Deepu).

The beach is nice and clean, the pool is just perfect, they can lend you bikes to have a little tour around the hotel, backwaters are very close by, you can go there by cab or rickshaw.

Before choosing Beach Symphony we came here to look at the comments and all I want to say is that it's not as nice as the others have described it, it's even better and nicer than the pictures !

If you're looking for a big resort with sattelite TV, huge restaurant, 200 other guests gathering around the pool and a disco to dance all night long then pass you way.
But if you're looking for a place that feels like home, with nice people, good food, incredible location, where every detail seems to have been chosen for you than Beach Symphony what you're looking for.

I would recommend this for couples and honeymoons, friends looking to relax in a quiet atmosphere, and family with children.

We arrived here at the end of a very hectic touring holiday, and knew we had made the right choice the minute we walked into our beautifully appointed cottage. Other rave reviews of A Beach Symphony tell it exactly as it is. It was spotlessly clean - even 'their' section of the beach is swept twice daily. We loved the comfortable loungers on the verandah, and having all our meals served there made it so relaxing. The quality of the food was excellent, and my vegetarian husband never had the same dish twice. The beautiful swimming pool would not be out of place in a big luxury hotel - how wonderful not to have to share it with loads of noisy people! Loved the flowers everywhere and the attention to small details.

All the staff were delightful : Deepu the manager was helpful and friendly, Binu the chef listened to our likes and dislikes and made us tasty, varied and interesting meals, and we enjoyed our conversations with Dominic, our English graduate waiter. Jan and Christel, the owners were not there much during our stay, but they came over to introduce themselves and tell us of their plans for the future. The 'hotel' runs like clockwork in their absence, so they have obviously got it right.

We appreciated the free wi-fi facility, and the packed breakfast given to us on our early departure for the airport. We will definitely return to this haven of perfect peace.

A beautiful end to our travels round central Kerala. We loved our beach house, elegant design, and extremely comfortable. The facilities were first class, superb granite and slate pool, beach gardens leading out onto the beach and the dramatic Arabian Sea. The people really made the stay a highlight of our trip, attentive without being overbearing, friendly without being intrusive and everyone quietly focused on making our stay as perfect as it could possibly be. A Beach Symphony was a real treat and worth every penny, you have the feeling of being a family friend rather than a paying guest.
