We stayed at Austin's simple but lovely home stay from the 28th December to the 3rd January. We arrived on the morning of the 28th and immediately made our way to the beach (150m from our room). We passed fishermen who'd just brought in their morning's haul. Fascinated my 3 year old. We arrived on the beach, took a quick dip and saw dolphins swimming not far from us. That made our day.
The beach is beautiful, clean and deserted much of the time. It's one of those few beaches in India where you can swim. Be prepared to see some local wildlife - crabs, gulls and sometimes dolphins and turtles.
The rooms are very simple but fine. Hot water is solar powered. This is a home stay not a luxury resort. As long as you keep that in mind, it's fine.
Austin and his wife Jasmine are lovely people who went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. They also have 2 young children our children enjoyed playing with. Jasmine makes the food. Simple home fare as far as vegetarian food is concerned. Meat and fish eaters are sure to find some delicious local fare.
Austin also organizes local visits to temples and tourist places around Marari. He arranged for us to have a houseboat tour in Alappey and we got a very good deal.
On the whole, we had a great time and would like to go back as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Room Tip: If you have children, it might be a good idea to stay on the ground floor as the railings on the fir...

We stayed for a couple nights at Austin's. Location cannot be beat (right on the beach) in a tranquil place off the tourist path. Austin and his family take great pride in taking care of guests (nice touches like free bottled water) and I truly hope to get to stay there again.

We arrived to Marari at 5am. Austine saved us from an expensive stay at one of the resorts. Our first plan was to stay for three nights, it turned out with ten. Since the beach doesn't offer plenty of food opportunitys Jasmin (Austines wife) cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner for us. Really good Keralan food. Austine is really friendly and helpful and I truly recommend anyone that goes to Mararikulam to stay at his home stay.

We visited this lovely homestay on Ocober 2011 planning to stay 3 days but stayed 9 days. Everything was so good, the environment, the room and the delicous food cooked by Jasmin, our second daughter. You cant imagine how marvellous the sunset is on Marari Beach. The fishermen and their wives are so friendly living around. Austin, the owner and our son settles all your problems , organizes trips around Allepey and thinks every detail for you. We felt as if we were at our home and we are planning to visit again and stay more in the coming years. We missed our daughter and son and granddaughter and son too. We are sure that you will feel as we do when you visit this place.

We arrived at Marari beach jan 2011 expecting it to be secluded, but for there to be some accommodation choices. When we got there we realised it is really quite remote and there are three choices: 1. Stay in a five star resort 2. Mid range bungalows 3. Austins home stay. We went for the latter because we had no choice due to availability of the bungalows and extortionate prices of the resorts. BUT we were absolutely delighted by how welcoming Austin (an english teacher) and his wife were. It is a small, basic block, split into two rooms with en suites, and a small veranda. There is also a roof where you can have a beer. At the time of visit Jan 2011, there were no shops, pharmacies, Internet cafes in the area or any individual restaurants. We ate all our food at another hostel about a ten minute walk up the road. Austins brother took us on some excellent tours. We would recommend this if you are looking for back to basics non touristy coastline and getting to know and supporting a family who are starting a new business.

We spent our last two nights in Kerala at Marari Austin Beach Villa and we were tempted to change our flight and stay longer! We just wanted to relax by the beach and this was the perfect place. The room was clean and comfortable (I appreciated the mosquito net on the bed) and the location was perfect for us. We ate all of our meals there, with Jasmine cooking some of the best food we had on our entire trip. The beach was beautiful and quiet and many times we were the only ones there. My husband enjoyed getting up early to watch the local fishermen come in with their daily catch. Austin and his family are gracious hosts and they went out of their way to ensure that we had a wonderful stay. Their motto is "Come as guests and depart as friends," and that says it all.

The days we spent at Austin's homestay were undoubtedly the highlight of our holiday - the destination is perfect (right on the beach edge), the people are wonderful and the food is sublime.

We stumbled across Marari after a recommendation from the owner of another homestay and were a little apprehensive about going somewhere completely random. The homestay itself is in a small beach-side village and is a fantastic secluded spot void of the hussle and bussle of other parts of India. Our days with Austin were spent wandering along the most wonderful beach, seeing what the fishermen had caught, playing cricket with the locals, exploring the local area, meeting some of the villagers, etc. In some sense this is the closest we came to seeing the "real" Kerala.

Austin and his family are the nicest people you'll ever meet and we were delighted to find that he speaks perfect english and works as a tour guide part of the time - so that he can advise you on whatever you'd like to do.

So, to summarize, visit!
