Carnoustie Ayurveda & Wellness Resort
Ranked #3 of 5 Hotels in Mararikulam
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 16, 2013

Carnoustie Beach Resort provides the ideal getaway from the hustle bustle of daily life. Once one reaches there, all stress and strain melts away in the lush green surroundings. The beauty of nature is emphasized in the beautiful landscape. The ambience provides total tranquility and one automatically slows down in tune with it.
The Villas were luxurious and well appointed, with all modern amenities. Bathrooms were spacious with sunken bathtubs.
This is a beautiful retreat for couples with children as there are many activities to keep the children occupied. In addition to the large swimming pool, there are cycles were available as well as a Recreation room with indoor games, books etc.
We enjoyed the food is delicious which was a good blend of both authentic Kerala cuisine as well as continental favorites. The staff were attentive, courteous and eager to please. Every request was taken care of with a smile.
Spa therapies were relaxing and left one feeling pampered and rejuvenated.
There is a gym for those energetic enough to exercise. Apart from this we enjoyed the yoga classes every evening. We returned from the trip refreshed, rejuvenated and already waiting to return again.

If Carnoustie was in a different price category, this review would be more positive, however at over 350 GBP per night this resort is not worthy of a 5 star rating. Upon arriving we were upgraded to a villa with a private pool, which compensated for many of the disappointments of our stay.

Positives:
The villas are beautifully furnished and well designed.
The seafood and local cuisine are excellent (we did not sample the western cuisine).
Staff in the restaurant are lovely.
Bicycles available to navigate the extensive grounds or local area (but they are not maintained, I needed to try three bikes before finding one that was usable).
Beautiful part of Kerela.
Swimming pool is spectacular.

Negatives:
The beds are extremely hard, I requested an additional duvet to line the mattress which somewhat improved the comfort, but for most individuals the beds will be uncomfortable. I slept poorly for all four nights of our stay.
On Saturday and Sunday mornings the church across the street commences playing music at 5:00am and continues until 10:00am; the volume is similar to that of a stadium concert making sleep impossible.
Despite being open for a year, the resort does not possess a liquor licence. It is unethical that on their website and marketing materials it states that Carnoustie has a world class selection of wines and alcohol available. Being unable to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner was sorely missed.
Buffet meals! No five star resort should have any shape or form of buffet. A breakfast buffet might be excusable, but a buffet for dinner?
Misinformed staff - 1) although we were on half board, the restaurant was initially charging us for some or all of our dinners until we clarified with the management 2) we asked to borrow a DVD player to watch a movie (listed in the guest services directory), after an hour we received a phone call that ther was no one on staff who could deliver it and it would take another hour. Another hour later we rang to find out where it was we were then told their last DVD player was given to someone else. My husband insisted this was unacceptable and that one needed to be found as we had requested it first. The front desk clerk agreed to find us one and another 30 minutes later we still didn't have a DVD player, to which the clerk informed us that housekeeping had come to install the DVD player but that they didn't have a long enough cable to install it, which was rather funny as we had been in our room all evening and no one ever came!
There are dilapidated buildings on the grounds, funnily occupying the prime locations of beach front location.
The reservations desk is near useless, my first email requesting a booking was completely ignored, it took a second email and phone call to get a response. I should have heeded this as a warning and chosen another resort.
There is not enough hot water to fill the beautiful bathtubs.

Overall this resort needs to make some significant improvements to warrant the price point. The spa is of average quality, during one of my treatments renovations were taking place in an adjoining building - hardly relaxing! I stayed in Shreyas (near Bangalore) some time ago, the owners need to take some pointers from this resort on how a resort should be run.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room on the path to the beach, the noise will be disturbing.

This hotel is very beautiful, the thatched bungalows are lovely. The staff appear very friendly, very willing to help and anxious to know if all is well. However, our overall opinion was that the staff have much to learn about 5 star service. When we arrived we asked for a map of the site which they did not have. There was no information in the room as to when meals were served in the restaurant or what facilities the hotel had to offer, ie spa treatments etc.

We had to ask for a waste paper bin for our room as none was supplied. Getting our laundry returned was a hassle. The Housekeeping phone was permanently engaged as was the Reception phone so we had to physically visit Reception in order for them to contact Housekeeping. It was eventually delivered at 9.30pm after two requests from us.

The food was good and there was a good variety to choose from. The restaurant staff were eager to please but again fell down on service. On one occasion we ordered omelettes for breakfast. One omelette arrived after ten minutes the other never came. They were very slow to refill coffee/tea cups and invariably you had to call a waiter to ask for it.

We heard through another guest that one evening they were putting on a display of martial arts. We checked in Reception who knew nothing about it. At lunchtime one of the waiters casually mentioned it and from him we were able to get the details. Nobody seemed to be in overall charge which gave the feeling they were getting by "on a wing and a prayer!"

When my husband went to settle the bill the Receptionist was clearly not familiar with the proceedure. It took over half an hour to conclude the business. As we had to leave very early the following morning we were asked if we would like the hotel to provide a breakfast box for us which we could take with us. We said thankyou, that would be wonderful. In the event no breakfast box was waiting for us as we departed.

This hotel, lovely though it is, does not provide a five star service. We were not asked to complete a feedback form with comments so one wonders if and how they will learn. In all honesty I would not reccommend it.

Room Tip: The rooms are separate thatched bungalows which are very attractive. We had a bungalow with a plung...

This hotel should NOT be open for business, despite the glossy marketing.
Everything about this hotel is a sham.
The villas & grounds look good at first sight but then everything deteriorates.
The snagging list for this hotel is endless:
Beds are cheap and staggeringly uncomfortable, room service menu is only partially available, paint is peeling, mini bars are empty, plumbing is non existent, Jacuzzi bath belches & dispenses detritus into the already stained bath, hot water fails, villa pools are tiny & unfinished.
The 'private beach' is disappointing, with only a few loungers but no drinks or food available (& it is a hike from the actual hotel)
More importantly - DO NOT swim in the sea as the current / undertow is very very strong & therefore dangerous.
Step one foot off the 'private beach' area and you will step right into the local fishermans scenic toilet.
The pool is huge but has no food or drink facilities (although the pool attendant was charming & attentive)
The bar - there is NO bar of any description - the hotel does not have an alcohol license.
The restaurant is soulless (only 1 restaurant not 3 as advertised)
Worst of all is the shocking disrespect that management shows to its staff. The junior staff were charming & professional however the management treated them with hostility & distain.
To sum up - do not book the Carnoustie Beach Resort & Ayurvada Spa .... avoid at all costs.

Room Tip: Dont waste your money!

Barring the boiling hot weather (not in the hands of the resort), the resort was a fantastic getaway from the hustle bustle of everyday life.

From the gorgeous villas, (with its "wow factor" as Alicecristal puts it) to the amazing food, carnoustie provides you the perfect getaway destination to not do much but relax, laze and soak in natural beauty.

Even though i went there for a weekend with my wife and daughter, A longer vacation is already on the cards.

I loved this place, with its welcoming lobby, carefully tended grounds, huge pool, beautiful food, and spotless accommodations. All the staff were very accommodating as well, and seemed genuinely happy to have us staying there. My two friends and I were given a lovely tour of the organic garden with its gorgeous herbs, vegetables, and flowers by the lifeguard who watches over the beach area, and the onsite gardener was eager to share his knowledge with us. The food in the restaurant was beautifully presented and surprisingly well-priced for the quality, and the wait staff treated us like royalty. Our rooms had everything we could possibly want to have a comfortable stay. My only regret was that we were booked for only one night so we were unable to take advantage of the gym, yoga classes, and spa area due to time constraints. I would love to stay there again!

Room Tip: The villas with private pools are exceptional and include an outdoor shower.

The food was fabulous - we tried both the normal and Seafood restaurant and had a fabulous meal in both. Unfortunately the hotel has not acquired a alcohol license yet but you are able to drink in your villa - they charge no extra for room service and candlelit dinner next to our pool was definitely a highlight!
The punag pool villa is stunning and Jerin the butler was exceptional! The communal pool, beach and spa were all lovely but the gym and yoga instructor could be improved. Visiting the local church San Sebastian is a must - even better during festival time when there is a fair ground, market and lots of entertainment!
