“STOP!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL!!!!”
Reviewed February 22, 2011

1) No hot water in the room every single day. No response to our calls on the reception.
2) Toilets...Do not s....t into the toilet as it is not possible to flush it away. It looks like a swimming pool with fragrances you will never forget.
3)Food - chicken ,eggs, rice every single day.No salads or seafood.
Romantic dinner with only two lobsters and few snacks will cost you $150.00 (Soft drinks like champagne are not included , for those you pay about $60)
4)Beach: chairs and towels are not available if you came later than 9.00 a.m.
5)All inclusive : such facilities as spa, jacuzzi will cost you $15 for 15 min
6)Staff: everybody is nice and friendly, will serve you with courtesy if you give tips, otherwise you will be neglected.
7)Star rating: It does not come up to the expectations of the 4 star hotel. Have been to many countries and various hotels. That is definitely not a four star hotel.Name Costa Caribe by Hilton was changed to Costa Caribe Juan Dolio in 2006, so please do not confuse with Hilton Hotels...has nothing in common!!
8)Language: Staff and the rest people barely speak English at all(It seems as if the whole world coming up there should speak spanish!!!)
9)Shampoo: was only one usage shampoo bottle which was enough for those who have 3 hair on the head,or are bold...that would be enough for the rest of the holidays...))))
GOOD THINGS:
1)The weather: a lot of sunshine
2)Sea: nice views, perfect for swimming, diving, etc.
3)Beach: nice and clean, a lot of friendly people, entertainment, music, etc.
5)Three restaurants: TO FIND SOMETHING MORE THAN EGG,RICE AND CHICKEN( ITALIAN RESTAURANT : NICE AND CLEAN,BUT THE FOOD...TAKE TRIO PASTA AND YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF A TOP COOK )))))))
6)Romantic dinner: the good thing about that is that you will never forget delighting and sharing nice moments alone at the beach by the table....

This is what I sent to Nolitours/ AIr Transat regarding this dump!!

My family has been trying to get together for a family vacation for some time but since some are away at university and some are working it has been difficult. So we were quite excited when we managed to find the time we could all go. We asked our travel agent, XXXXX, who we have dealt with for 20 years to find the best deals in an all –inclusive resort , 3.5/4 star or above. One of the ones he presented was Coral Costa Caribe in the Dominican Republic. We arrived January 4 and were assigned 4 rooms, S111, S113, S114 and S115 (6 people in total).
We have been going to resorts for 20 years and have stayed in 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 star places including 2 other trips to the DR. None of these had the problems that this place had. Listed below are the main problems we encountered.

1. No towels or toilet paper in the room when we arrived. Took almost 20 hours to correct -even with towels we only got bare minimum (2 bath and some days a hand towel)

2. On ground level and sliding patio doors did not lock. One side they put sliding chain lock which could easily be opened - took 3 complaints and over night about 12 hours to fix

3. one room had water leaking from the bathroom ceiling light fixture so much so that it was accumulating in the bathtub about 1 inch- requested that it be fixed or move rooms 5 times – finally on day 3 gave another room (S108)

4. Water pressure was so weak that the shower and taps barely came on in S114 and S115.

5. Air conditioner did not work in S114– requested that it be fixed several times but it never was.

6. TV in 1 room did not work – cable was ripped out of the wall – managed to fix it ourselves since the hotel was so reluctant to fix anything

7. Front desk staff was extremely unhelpful – my daughter wanted to purchase internet time – told come back tomorrow, come back at 10, come back at 3, come back at 4, etc – took 3 days to get it

8. Front desk was supposed to change money but again it was come back later, again and again

9. Wait staff was rude on various occasions- their strategy was ignore you or just say no e.g. asked if they had butter they said no, didn’t have it then my daughter discovered it accidentally (just 1 of many examples)

10. The restaurants were always running out of glasses, coffee cups, napkins, etc and the place was not near full capacity

11. Rooms were generally dumpy. Obviously poor quick fix jobs .

12. Son’s girlfriend’s iphone was stolen from her room. In her zipped purse in a zipped pocket – Security did nothing. Treated her like it was her fault, even called her a liar. Refused to even give her a copy of a report that said she had reported it stolen. Kept telling her to come back over and over but never gave her anything. Head of security was the worst and rudest. His name is Gregorio Collado (phone 809 526 2244 ext 3531/3555). We also went to the police and both the hotel and police refused to provide a theft report, so we can not claim for the $700 phone. She spent the last 4 days of the holiday trying to deal with this. Again a complete waste of time trying to talk to these people!! Very poor customer service!!

13. Snack bar – first night arrived about 9, went to the snack bar. They had cold cooked hamburgers sitting in a tray, cold hot dogs in cold water, buns that were hard as rocks. My daughter asked for a coffee cup so she could get a coffee from their coffee machine. They didn’t have any and told her to use the thin plastic disposable glass for her hot coffee – It wasn’t any better during the day – One day the buns were all mouldy- one day my son asked to have his hamburger put back on the grill to warm it up, finally the third person he asked did it.

14. Nolitours brochure lists these things in the rooms, hairdryers (only half the rooms had them), coffee makers (no rooms had these), radio/alarm clocks (half of the rooms had these but they didn’t work), an iron (no rooms had these).

15. The phones did not have any button or any instructions on how to call the front desk, in fact it looked like the side buttons had been removed. Asked one front desk employee how to call them he told me dial 0. I tried this and got the outside operator, obviously he gave me wrong info.

16.We went to play badminton and were given a birdie that was so old and wrecked that it was impossible to play with We asked for another and were given one with broken feathers that worked somewhat better. We asked for a new birdie 3 times after this and finally they actually looked and got one.

17. My husband paid $450US to Richard (head of aquatics) for an 8 hour fishing charter. They were supposed to get a boat with down-riggers so they could fish deep and BBQ for burgers. Also Captain Richard was supposed to accompany them as he spoke English. The boat was 45 minutes late, there were no downriggers, no BBQ for burgers and Richard did not accompany them, so no English speaking captain.

18. Room S108 never had hot water 24 hours a day and the bathtub dripped constantly.

19. In room S111 the tile was crudely repaired with a completely different tile. Functional but ugly.

20. A tile fell off the wall by the elevator, and it was just left there, so one picked it up or tried to fix it.

21. This is not to say there were not some good points, the beach was nice and very well kept, the architecture and grounds were nice, and well attended. The bar staff worked hard to work around the shortage of glasses.

22. We paid extra for reserved seat on the flight but even that did not work out due to a mechanical problem with the plane. Air Transat did a great job to recover and treated us very well, so kudos to them.

We weren’t the only ones, lots of the people we spoke to had problems and had to change rooms, some more than once. This place was misrepresented by Nolitours. This place is in no way anywhere close to a 3.5 star resort!! It felt like we were constantly hassling with the staff, particularly the front desk and security. All of these problems caused our holiday to be ruined and I request our money refunded as well as some compensation for the stolen phone.

We received a long letter from Nolitours in response. They basically said "too bad!!" Needless to say we will not be taking their word on any resorts again.

This is my fourth trip to this hotel. Again this year we were well received by the check in counter clerks. Our room was comfortable and clean. The food is still great but most of all the staff at this hotel are friendly and helpful. Porfirio, the omelette king is the king of omelettes.the a la carte restaurant are excellent, there is three of the, the mexican, the italian and the dominican. the beach is clean, white sand and the ocean was great. I will return again, wether this year or next. Thanks to all the staff at this hotel for making our trip a lovely one again.

Used to be Hilton-owned. Ants all over the bathroom. Black mold on caulk/grout. Mysterious puddles appearing on the floor. Sheets? Gray. Towels? If you get them, gray. Bed? Like granite. Service? Huh? What? We called three days in a row for an iron that never made it. Called TEN times throughout 24-hr period for overflowing toilet. They LIED and said they sent someone up!!! Unbelievable!!! Food is horrible. I mean baaaad. We ate off site after we both got sick. And if you do eat in the buffet, just try getting a lousy drink of water, never mind alcohol/soda. And you have to go around and steal silverware off other tables, because the waitress will always "be right back" with yours... sure. Waitresses wandering aimlessly, as if in a drug-induced haze, carrying a random napkin or empty water pitcher. Unbelievable.

Last two days we had heavy rains, so much so that common walkways were flooded with inches of water. Why? Well, because of course they placed the drains on the high spots. Water leaking into the room. PLEASE STAY AWAY!!!!!

About us: 2 Americans from PA, in our 20's, young professionals, on a budget, looking for a getaway from cold and crappy weather.

What we got: 5 days all inclusive for $700 per person including airfare. Can't beat the price!!

About the hotel:

Rooms- The room we stayed in was decent, then again we didn't use it for anything but sleeping and showering. We never had a problem with hot water or water pressure. The room was cleaned daily. One issue was the towels....they were never there before 4pm but whatever, we never showered until after that anyway. Our room was located right in the hub of everything ( near the main pool) so you can hear people shuffling about pretty much all night and morning. However, we were grateful we had a balcony. If your a light sleeper...ask to stay on the far side of the hotel or near the italian restaurant or tennis courts. *TIP--> I tipped the maid 3 us dollars the day we got there when she knocked on the door. It goes a long way, our room was hooked up compared to other friend's we met down there.
Overall, the rooms need updating, and the beds were not very comfy, but for 5 days it was fine.

Ammenities: Water sports? No...they lied. They have a few kayaks but no one uses them because there is like a 15 foot radius you can use them in. They don't have snorkel gear...you need to buy it for 15 bucks in the gift shop. I never once saw scuba lessons so forget it if that is a selling point for you. They have 1 sand volleyball court and have daily games around noon everyday. They have water aerobics too with this cheezy techno music. It's hilarious to watch people do it..and if your in to that then right on! They have 4 pool tables, a ping pong table and a pathetic excuse for a mini golf course. Mini golf consisted on 9 holes and get this- it was a concrete course..no fake grass or astroturf or even rubber...it was concrete. Total waste of time. They have 1 tennis court- we didn't play but it looked ok. They have a "disco" which is supposed to be a club? I don't know...it's dirty and no one goes in there. We checked it out all 5 nights and there were never more than 10 people in it at a time.

Casio: The casino was ok....nothing like us Americans are used to. They have about 30 slot machines, black jack, roulette, poker, and a few other table games. There is a minimum bet of $5 and max bet of $100. It can pass time if it rains but gets old really quickly.

The staff: Let's put it this way.......They are more than willing to help you if you tip them. This gets annoying though because it's like they expect it and if you don't tip they ignore you. I have no problem tipping for good service, but I expect good service before I tip, not after. There were many times we got our own drinks at the buffet dinner but...funny after I tipped the bartender a dollar there was a parade of people coming by asking if we needed anything. By the end of the trip I realized one thing....I was stupid to tip at all. I payed my money to go there and that should be enough.TIP--> Take $10 in quarters and tip with that...it will last you the entire trip and 25 cents is like a dollar to them.

Food: Surprisingly good. No complaints on the food. Italian was good- order the salmon. Mexican food was awesome...chicken fajitas were delicious. Buffet was great minus the service. Snack bar was open when the restaurants are not...pizza, pasta, and chicken were the best. Steer away from the salad...flies graze on it all day- gross.

Beach: Amazing beach. Hands down, 3rd on my roster next to Hawaii and Bermuda. Sunset it amazing and the water is perfect temperature. 5 star beach! Always clean too!!

Vendors/ Beggers: If this resort has one Achilles heel it is the freaking beggers on the beach that constantly hound you to buy their stuff. It gets so annoying. The only person I bought anything off was the dude that was selling fresh fruit (it was delicious).
TIP-> Only bring 1 dollar bills down there with you and don't ask how much things are. Make them an offer and if they ask for more money say NO- trust me they will give it to you for what you offer them because they'd rather sell it to you at that price than not at all. 1 dollar =36 mexican pesos remember that. I got 1 coconut, 2 oranges, and sugarcane for 3 dollars or 100 pesos.

**Random important things to know: (BYOSB) Bring Your Own Sunblock or buy it in the airport- they charge you $26 American dollars in the gift shop for a small little tube of it.

Americans: DO NOT exchange your American money. It will go farther than pesos. They charge more for stuff if it's in Pesos (weird right?) Bring $1 bills like your going to a strip club and a roll or quarters for tips. There is a $15 charge to enter the country in your an American paid at the airport when you land.

Haggle the crap out of people. If you pay 50% or more of the price they originally ask for your getting ripped off.

Watch your stuff, people steal....buy the lock for your room...I wouldn't trust the maids either. Don't pay for an upgraded room online....ask for one when you get there and offer to pay more if you really need a better room. We made friends while down there that paid $100 more for an "upgrade" through a 3rd party booking sight (expedia or cheapcarribean) and their room was the same exact room as ours. The superior rooms are on the 5th floor and really really nice.

English speaking people: Brush up on your spanish, your going to need it as the majority of staff don't speak a lick of it. Americans, you will be the minority here most vacationers are European, Canadian, or Dominican. You'll find Americans but they are few and far between.

Overall, we had a good trip, met good people, drank lots of booze, got some sun, ate good food, and relaxed for 5 days. Be aware of what you are purchasing, have an open mind, and you'll have a good time!

My wife and I just returned from a week's stay at the Costa Caribe Coral..we had a great time. We were concerned, based on what we read here, so we were quite relieved to find some things were blown way out of proportion.

The room was fine. Was it a 5 -star? No, but that is not what I paid for, either. It was clean, spacoius and had storage. Our room was cleaned daily - we had no issues with that whatsoever. Could they use some updating? Sure, but they were certainly habitable.

The beach is beuatiful. There is lots of space and lots of sun and lots of shade. Sometimes it was tough to find a shady spot due to people saving chairs with their towels early in the a.m. and then not coming to the beach til noon, but that was a minor issue. We walked quite a way in both directions - great beach for walking.

Water sports - well that was tough. There were no paddle boats as pictured in one review. You could only kayak within the roped off area because the water was a bit rough, so we passed on the water sports.

Drinks/bartenders were great. They gladly made their specials, and accomodated our requests. Food was better than we expected as well. We ate at all the restaurants; we were careful about what we ate, but overly so. We had no stomach issues whatsoever.

The staff was friendly and helpful. Yes, they speak Spanish...this IS the Dominican, but we managed. In all this was a great trip and good get away for us. I think the management is making efforts to improve things and it shows.

My mother and I spent Dec 10- 24, 2010 at the Coral Costa Caribe in Juan Dolio. We travel to the Dominican Republic 1-3 times a year and are very familiar with the Dominican and its people. We love the Dominican Republic. This was the first time that I’ve ever stayed in the area of Juan Dolio. I had been through this part of the Dominican a few times and remember passing this hotel. It looked beautiful from the outside and we decided then and there, the next time we come to the DR we are staying there. We came home and looked on TripAdvisor to see what others had to say about this hotel. We read many of the bad reviews on here but decided to take a leap of faith and book here anyways. I’m very glad we did; it was absolutely awesome.
I mean it is no 5star resort but that’s not what you’re paying for. Some people need to realise that most of the time, you do get what you pay for. If you’re looking for a 5star resort I suggest you stay at the Dreams or Casa De Campo, but if you’re looking for a fun vacation at a great price I think you should stay at this hotel.
Okay I know this will be a lot of reading but just bare with me; the break down will be worth it. So here goes.
We’ll start off with the rooms. In all honesty, they do need some updating. The resort itself is older and in need of a face lift but it was still a great place to crash at the end of the day. We had to change rooms once because our view wasn’t great. It looked onto the service road for the staff so at 6am it was a little loud. Also we had little ants in that room, that was the only real issue, & they happily moved us to another room which had a much better view and no little ants. If there is a problem with your room, don’t hesitate to ask them to move you. The beds were a little hard and the pillows were a little flat but after a long day of being in the hot sun, you didn’t even notice. The bathroom was just okay; nothing you’d look twice at. We had hot water and lots of mirror space for both of us to get ready for dinner. There wasn’t too much storage so if you pack lots you may not have a place to put everything. The maids make sure that your room is always clean. They would wash our floors everyday and made sure the water, soap and toilet paper was always stocked. A dollar tip goes a long way too. In all honesty, you’re barely in your room anyways just to sleep and change. It really doesn’t have to be perfect.
The food. It was nothing but one word; amazing! The buffet had good variety, don’t be afraid to try some of the “non-canadian” foods they are quite good. The a la carte restaurants were all delicious too. The Mexican restaurant was my favourite; best margaritas. Don’t forget to pack items of clothing that are a little dressier. They do have a dress code for the a la carte restaurants & there is no restriction on how many times you can eat at these restaurants. The 24hr snack bar was pretty good too. The chef there is very friendly and helpful. If it’s late and it looks like some of the food has been sitting out, just ask for fresh and he’ll be happy to make it for you.
The bars were all great as well; you never had to wait in line. If you are unsure of what you would like, ask for the bartenders special; you can’t go wrong. The best bar was the pool bar. The staff there spoke really good English & made the best “Sex on the Beach” on the entire resort. The sports bar service is mediocre, depending on the bartender and depending on the day. There is only one bartender on staff so on the weekends when lots of locals would come in; you would have to wait a little bit. The disco was just okay. Not very busy during the week but on the weekends it was INSANELY busy & really fun. It definitely needs some work done to it though. They played a decent variety of music; if there was something you wanted to dance to, ask the dj and he’ll play it for you.
The staff at this hotel is absolutely incredible. They will bend over backwards to make you happy. I had gotten sick while we were out there & my mother went to the concierge to get something that will help me feel better. He went to the kitchen right away and grabbed some ginger and hot water to help me feel better. This proves that they go that extra mile to help you out with any problem. Most of them speak some English so communicating isn’t too hard. It helps to know a little bit of Spanish. A smile also goes a long way.
The beach; absolutely breath taking. So clean and there was always a chair for you to soak up the sun’s rays. There is an old guy that will drag the chairs to wherever you’d like to park it for the day. I’m not a hundred percent sure if he works for the resort so a 1$ tip every couple days will guarantee the best chairs. The one thing about the beach that I wasn’t a fan of was the vendors are very persistent, but if you tell them to leave you alone they respect that and do. If you do decide to purchase items from the vendors, don’t accept their opening price always haggle down.
Entertainment was decent. The entertainment staff, “the chocolate friends”, put on activities during the hours 10-12 then from 3-6. The hours of 12-3 is siesta time so there are no activities during this time because the staff is all on break. As for nightly entertainment they have a show every night at 10. They generally have an icebreaker with lots of audience participation then they would have the dancers perform a different show every night. If you’re staying for two weeks however, you do get repeats but they are pretty good shows nonetheless. After the show there are a couple options to you; you can dance all night in the disco, play pool/darts/foosball in the sports bar, or go to the casino.
All in all our stay was incredible. The resort is no 5star but there sure is 5star service. The people here are not like any people I’ve met at any other resort; even 5star resort staff wasn’t as good as these people were. They will make your trip unforgettable. We loved it so much that my friend and I are going back at the end of March. I hope that this review will help you decide on where you would like to stay in the Dominican Republic. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Happy holiday hunting =)
