“Great Value for Money”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

Really enjoyed my recent stay here. The photos are accurate, the apartments are spacious and well furnished. The staff is very friendly and trying to help in any way they can. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a clean, friendly, place in between Sosua and Cabarete. the beach is just a short walk away, and is very private compared to the beaches at Cabarete and Sosua. Just 15 minutes from Puerto Plata Airport.
Here are my visitor tips:
- bring own shampoo, soap etc. not much is provided (which it should be).
- if a light sleeper, bring earplugs and eye-shade - although normal sleepers had no complaints.
- you should rent a car, its basically a "must," as nothing other than the beach is in close walking distance. This will give you flexibility to go to either Cabarete or Sosua, or Encuentro. We went to the 27 Waterfalls, which was fun and is recommended.
- Dine at Otra Cosa in Cabarete, eat breakfast at Panaderia & Reposteria Dick (Cabarete) and try out Natura in Perla Marina (Cabarete, but near the hotel)
- Surf at Encuentro (turn off the highway at Hideaway Resort, or at Coconut Palms resort)
- bring lots of singles and fives (dollars) to make spending easy. Credit Cards are not widely accepted.
- Note the Hotel has no restaurant! (Which means you have to buy groceries, which can be done right at the highway turn-off for the hotel at the Coastal Gas Station and Supermarket.

Cons:
- comically low water pressure in shower
- no telephone in room
- safe is very small (cant fit ipad) and uses keys vs code.
- WiFi is available but throws you off every couple of minutes...i believe the issue is that the hotspot is overloaded with connecting devices, and probably needs to have its max number of users raised...I didnt ask them to do this, but it the situation was super annoying.
- no restaurant option

Room Tip: A higher up ocean view room

Hello Dutchsurf

Thank you for your positive review. we strive our very hardest to make our guests stay 100% enjoyable.

I found your comments to be very constructive, and I thank you for them. Regarding low water pressure, until now I had not heard a complaint. However, when asking my son who lives with us at Grand Laguna he fully agreed with you that the water pressure is too low! Our plumber has come today and increased the pressure to all of the units. I am very glad you brought this to our attention, and I am sure all of our future guests will be also.

Also, telephones are available for all units. We ask a small charge for these, as they include free calling to North America and all phones, including cell phones in Dominican Republic. Rather than make a charge for these calls, we charge a small flat fee for the phones. My staff are to make these available to all guests when checking in and we have signs posted around the office offering these. I am sorry if our staff didn't make this 100% clear. We will be sure to make the information more prominent in the future.

Our wifi, while usually excellent, has had some issues over the past couple of weeks. Claro has been up and down a number of times over this period. We have ordered a back up system, including more band width, which is scheduled to be installed beginning January 9th.

This past week we opened the Grotto Bar & Grill on the property. It serves basic quality foods and drinks, including chicken, burgers, fish, fresh juice and alcoholic beverages. There are also a number of restaurants we recommend that will deliver direct to our condos.

Again, I thank you for your very thoughtful comments, and recommendation of our condo/hotel and hope to see you again.

My daughter and I stayed at Grand Laguna for the Holidays this year. The property is amazing! It is brand new and in great condition. We stayed in a 2 bedroom condo for our trip. The staff and maids are very nice and helpful. They helped us with ordering delivery food and giving us directions around town. They can also coordinate excursions and activities for you. Because of the location, it is very quiet and peaceful. There is 24 hour armed security which is great when traveling abroad. There are several markets close by so we cooked most nights. The appliances are fantastic and all the cooking accessories are provided. The private beach is a short walk, but the water is rather rough. We opted to rent a scooter and drive the short 5 minute drive to Playa Sosua which is amazing. You can rent a chair for 100 pesos and the water is much calmer which was perfect for my 10 year old daughter. Grand Laguna is a bit off of the beaten path so I would suggest having extra money for taxis to get in and out of Sosua where all the action is. Renting a scooter was cheaper than the car, but a bit dangerous. Luckily we returned home with all of our parts and pieces. :) The Management does offer a daily shuttle that leaves at 11 a.m. and returns at 3 p.m. I would highly recommend this property to other travelers. I am very picky and this more than exceeded my expectations.

This was our first time staying in Grand laguna. The rooms are very elegant and comforting, all the decoration was definitely my style, Amazing Wifi which for me is quite important as i do a lot on the computer, The Tv system is very cool and for those days you dont want to do anything or you just want to rest you can and quite easily find yourself lost in hours and hours of many tv shows and movies that are offered to you with this system the have installed. The cleaning lady Claribel, who is very professional, sometimes carries her assistant which is a PARROT! The pool Was very Nice. The owners Tim and Terry and staff are all amazing and friendly people and will definitely make you feel welcome. This place offers so much variety when it comes to location as it is close to cabarete and also close to sosua which is a big bonus. Will definitely recommend this to everyone as it was a great experience. thanks to Tim,Terry, Dragon, And all the staff for making this happen !

This was a break away from it all,as my wife had just had a major operation and needed to have some good needed rest. From the minute we arrived we were taken away by this place. We were greeted by the manager and his assistant, which went out of there way to help my wife and took us to our condo, which was a three bedroom looking out to the ocean.I can only say that this was large modern and of the highest standard, marble kitchen ,large 40 inch tv..On the first morning we were visited by our maid..claribel and because my wife was sick she made her soup and returned 3 times a day to check to see if she was ok.We were visited by Terry and Tim, which are the owners of the project, they went out of there way to make sure every thing was perfect. .The whole stay was made perfect by a the whole staff and owners at grand laguna. The only bad thing about grand laguna is the fact that you had to leave.I would recommend this place to everyone...

Room Tip: We stayed in E3 this condo faces straight out to the ocean, four large double beds.large lounge,large...

This is my second time to Grand Laguna. Last time stayed for a week this time I need 2 weeks and in the end it was not enough. Being in commercial real estate and working 7 days a week - my breaks need to be totally detoxing and Grand Laguna delivers this in spades. With access to a secluded beach and nestled in amongst huge private homes gives GL and great felling of home. Tim and Terry are Canadians who run the place and really make you feel part of the family. The staff are great and very attentive. The apartments are huge, clean, comfortable with tons of closet space. As one who loves to cook the kitchen was fully stocked with all that you need. Huge grocery store with all that you need 10 minutes away. It was great getting fresh fish from the spear fisherman on the beach. I am considering purchasing a unit as I can see myself spending at least a month a year here. Access to internet and phone systems means I can work and play here.

For those who like more action and restaurants Cabarete and Sousoua are 15 minutes away and offer many bars, restaurants, shopping etc.

No matter what Tim tells you Chi Chi is the master of the house.

Room Tip: Penthouse units are bit more expensive but worth every penny as they have great ocean views and have...

Thanks for the glowing review Blljana A, it means a lot to us. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the primarily white design of the condos, and found our staff reliable and welcoming. We are also very happy to hear that you enjoyed the company of the Love Birds in the lobby. We love pets here at Grand Laguna and welcome them as we do all members of the family!
