“Loved the Coconut Palms!”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

If you are looking to experience the true Dominican...can appreciate a beautiful breeze, wonderfully kind and accommodating staff, noise at times (chickens, dogs barking, horses, the tranquil sound of waves and some music from the Tikki bar), cooking the odd meal or not because they do have a meal plan in the restaurant, a walk to the beach and a resort where within days everyone knows you by name..then this resort may be for you. My husband and I really appreciate this resort for its uniqueness and will return. In fact..I just booked a week from December 28th to Jan 4th 2013, so I can share this experience with my three teenage children. The rooms are very spacious, CLEAN and the kitchen is fully equipped. The staff works very hard to please everyone. There is so much to do in Cabarete and Sosua and the fact that they provide free transportation to the beach and into town is wonderful and allows you to explore. I should add that many of the rooms have no air conditioning, which in no way it bothered us. All the windows are screened (no glass) with shutters and there is a beautiful breeze that blows through the unit all day. We had temperatures in the 28's to 30's and we were comfortable at all times. Actually I think this adds to the experience. As mentioned in other reviews this is not a Gold Crown - 5 star resort, but it is not listed as one either. I give it 5 stars for uniqueness, friendliness and for top notch staff. WE thoroughly enjoyed our vacation, and cannot wait to return in December.

My wife and I had a wonderful week’s vacation in January at Coconut Palms, Cabarete, on the north shore ($100 taxi trip from the Santiago airport) near where the annual surfing championships are held. Through RCI we booked a spacious 2-bedroom unit with full kitchen and, while we had a non-working toaster, it was quickly and cheerfully replaced. Service was exceptional and General Manager Judy was both accessible and very helpful, though we realized our week was not as crowded as had been during the Christmas-New Years weeks. We opted for the 4-day inclusive plan (vs. the 0- or 7-day plans). This allowed us to visit with our rented car two excellent fine-dining restaurants nearby in town: Otra Casa (no credit cards) and Bliss (see Nara, the owner, with her husband, the chef). Our plan entitled us to 4 dinners and 4 breakfasts and a grouper lunch at the resort’s beach cabana (on Wednesday). Coconut Palms has a medium-size pool with a net for water polo. Dave went horseback riding on a back road and along the beach past the kite surfing school. (Wear long pants for this riding experience.) The resort had a business center for free internet usage though no printer (see Judy). Our only problem was with the hot water if we took showers at the same time. Parking was free and although the driveway was in bad shape. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience.

This is a small resort, which allows you to meet and get friendly with staff and visitors. Mixed crowd from young and active, families with kids & mature couples...we all got along great. The pool was great. The restaurant food was good, not great, but the live music several times during the week were terrific. It is close to two towns for groceries & getting to see how the locals live, & lots of tours to choose from. The units are comfortable, not luxurious, but the cleaning staff was first rate, everyday service & prompt response to any problem. The beach (a beautiful 10 minute walk through fields of flowers, or take the golf cart) was quiet & relaxing, the north coast is not known for swimming beaches but you could in some spots. The kite surfing was fun to watch. The fish shack was awesome. Make sure to check out DREAM.com online for ways to help the local children. NOTE: there are very few hotels throughout the island that allow paper in the toilets...It is not a local problem.

Room Tip: The rooms away from the tiki bar are quieter due to happy nights of karioki. The back rooms have th...

The location is good...between Puerto Plata and Cabarete. The road to the hotel is filled with potholes and should've been repaired years ago. The hotel is clean and well maintained, with a nice pool. The food is mediocre, however if you rent a car, and you should, there are many good restaurants in Cabarete. Getting there at night is another matter as locals zip along the narrow highway on motorbikes with no lights.
The worst feature of this hotel is the very loud outdoor bar located in the middle of all the rooms. If you want to go to sleep before midnight, forget it it. The loud music and loud guests will keep you awake.
Finally, the hotel mentions a beach...it is a good 15 minute walk to the beach and there are no chairs, towels or any other amenities at the beach.

Room Tip: Third floor facing the water.

Me and my wife spent 1 week in this hotel 2 weeks ago.
It was a nice stay, being the staff, in general, very friendly and helpful. The pool is also good.
The room was nice, but almost everything inside was very old, which translated into, for instance, an archaic rusty water-heater inside the clothes closet; a toilet into which no paper can be thrown; an ackward wooden window-shade system that can hardly be closed, leading to a sunny room starting from 7a.m. ; no glass on windows which leads to poor noise filtering from the outside, ...
If a modernization effort was made, this hotel would certainly be a good option in the Dominican Republic!

We read the reviews about the Coconut Palms Resort on this tripadvisor page before booking. Not one of them mentioned that because of the 22 year age of the facility sewerage piping is smaller than is now generally used. There were signs above the toilet in each bathroom indicating that used toilet paper should not be flushed down the toilet. Imagine our shock when we realized that used toilet paper had to be put in plastic bags rather than flushed! Those wishing to stay at this resort should be made aware of this before booking. This resort needs a GREAT deal of updating.

Located on the outskirts of Cabarete. Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely pool, Good restaurant and bar. However, the apartments are sadly in need of updating and repair. Damaged tiles in the bathroom, rust on the pipes, water damage on bedroom ceiling, freezer door missing in fridge. Beach is 1 km away and it is strictly a surf beach but we did have fun in the shallows. Shuttle takes you into Cabarete for shopping and great beach.

Room Tip: Ask for room away from kitchen and road.
