“Plenty of room at the Hotel Alegria...”
Reviewed August 4, 2014

What can I say about this marvelous place? I, like you, read the reviews and was tickled to find something so highly rated with such a minimal price tag. My only negative was that there was no air conditioning and the breeze just wouldn't enter my room. I got used to it, however if that's a deal breaker for you then now you know. Regardless, everything was spectacular from the moment I arrived. I felt like I was at Cheers, since everybody knew my name. The rooms are cozy with a refrigerator which is a blessing when it's quite warm - they do have a ceiling fan and I never turned it off! The downstairs cafe was reasonable and EXCELLENT! The staff was stellar! I felt at home during my time there.

Room Tip: I stayed in #21 and the breeze would never make its way in and there was no air conditioning :-(

Thanks for a nice review that captures what we offer. This July was historically hot and we had surplus demand for the 50% of our rooms with A/C. During a normal month roughly half the guests register for a room with just ceiling fan and save themselves $5 to $10 a night. We offer the choice as long as we're not fully booked up in the A/C rooms like we were in July.

...but a "little" far from the beach. I'd suggest this hotel! Hot water, walking distance from everything good, and a great staff (limited English). A bit more expensive than backpackers might pay but it's very good. Very close to the grocery store to buy drinking water and snacks.

Hotel Alegria is consistently top rated for our location. As the title of this review indicates we are "close to good stuff." We are located on Cabarete Bay beach with our own beach access. At times of the year the beach immediately in front of the hotel is reduced, but a 30 yard walk puts the guest on the strand of beach that extends along the center of Cabarete. The comment on the language fluency of the staff seems a bit surprising. We have only 3 staff members that are not fluent in English, the maid, the maintenance man and the late night receptionist. Our main daytime receptionist is fluent in 4 languages, including English, and the evening receptionist is bilingual having lived a good part of his life in NYC. The European staff of the restaurant are all fluent in English as well as other languages. And the American owners live on site and are always available to meet and assist guests.

My husband and I stayed here for a month. After getting to know the city and seeing other hotels (and prices) we were even more thrilled with Hotel Alegria. It is clean, safe, has a friendly staff, and conveniently located in 10 min walking distance to city centre and one block from the grocery. With it set back off the main road it is nice and quiet at night and perfect for a strolls on the beach. There is also a great restaurant located on the premises, Hotel Alegria Cafe. This was a welcomed treat as we did not use our in room kitchenette as much as we planned; too much good food in Cabarete to try! This cozy hotel has all you need for a comfortable and 'local' Cabarete experience.

An air conditioned room for 40 USD, practically on the beach! You can't beat it. Granted, the water comes right up to the beach access at high tide, but we never had any trouble getting to the beach by way of the hotel next door. Another reviewer mentions a gym. Well, that is a very generous description. They have a rusty old weight machine on the roof. The hot tub was nice though. There is good internet in the lobby and cable in the rooms with lots of stations in English. I thought the restaurant was overpriced. At those prices, you might was well eat at one of the places on the beach. There's a really good book exchange, so bring something to trade! The biggest problem we had was that our safe didn't work, but we didn't complain to staff about it.

Room Tip: There was some noise from the parking lot at night. Probably quieter on the ocean side.

From Joseph and Rafael at the front desk,
To Claudia and Claire in the Alegria Cafe,
And finally Peter Orr the owner, every
Aspect of your visit to Cabarete is taken care of.

Yes the beach is at your door step and and a major grocery store is just around the corner but what makes or breaks a vacation is hassles.

Every whim, any and every concern is immediately taken care of from the moment you check in and immediately are adopted into the Alegria family.

Experience the beautiful beach, the great restaurants, the exciting nightlife Cabarete has to offer.
All of this has to start with a stay at the Hotel Alegria.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The Whirlpool on the roof was awesome. Having the supermercado next door worked out great. We had coffee every morning with Claudia at her cafe. The hotel was near enough to walk to town but far enough to be quiet. We would definitely stay there again if we visit Cabarete.
