“Walkway to Different Museums and the Botanical Garden”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

As the previous reviewer mentioned, "Calzada de los Hombres Illustres", is just a path that takes you to the museums and to the Botanical Garden. The pathway has sculptures of famous Mexicans (Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa, etc.).

The Regional Museum of Chiapas is a fantastic exhibit and the 2nd museum you come to when walking. It has an archeological wing with many artifacts from the various sites around Chiapas, including lesser known sites. (Not just Palenque). The part my family liked the most about this museum is that it had the majority of the information in Spanish and English. However, in the second wing which has the more recent history of Chiapas (the Spanish conquest, etc.) is only in Spanish. It's much less interesting than the archeological wing. Although there is an interesting and telling mural as you enter that shows the indigenous jumping to their death from the edge of the Sumidero Canyon. A fact that is mentioned when you take the boat tour in the Canyon.

There is also a Botanical Garden. I don't recommend it, unless just to walk through the shade for a bit. It's poorly labeled, not well maintained, parts of it in repair, and not clear where you should be going. But it only costs 5 pesos (jan 2013), so why don't you decide for yourself?

“Misnamed...this is only the walkway to the museums”
Reviewed August 20, 2011

The day we were there most of the rooms were closed, but the archaeological section was open. Chiapas is home to quite a few Mayan ruins, Palenque being the most famous. This part of the museum was not large but the collection was definitely worth the visit and it was well displayed.
