We took the Native Choice tour to these ruins (see separate review of Native Choice) and they were excellent. We were the only party there so we had the entire site to ourselves to explore at leisure. Our guide (Erick) was excellent and gave a very thorough tour, including climbing three of the pyramids. Well worth seeing!

We loved the history behind the ruins and our guide was fabulous! There were howler monkeys in the jungle on the way to climb to the top..It was high..and not for the faint of heart! Our teenagers loved it though,

We booked online, only had to pay a small deposit. We were only four people in the group. Nice mini bus, air-conditioned. Guide had cooler with water, soda, juice, sandwiches and chips.
The Ruins ground is fantastic and we were the only ones there! If you dare to climb the ruins you get a great look over the area. Guide spoke English very well. We were back at the pier with over an hour to spare. Costs very reasonable, much better than the cruise ship! Highly recommend it!

We booked the tour online with the Native Choice before our cruise, and easily walked the ~0.5mi from the tourist trap of Costa Maya out to their office. We hopped onto the van and were off to the ruins in a few minutes. The van was very nice, but the road from Costa Maya to the main highway was pretty bouncy (~30 mins). People with motion sickness should reconsider any tour that goes on that highway. Once onto regular roads it was smooth sailing to the ruins, with a short gas pitstop about 1 hour in. Total round trip drive time was around 2.5-3 hours (~240mi) and was pretty nice overall. We stopped at the welcome center and went on to Dzibanche, where we were the only 6 people in the entire complex. Great views, great pictures, and you can climb at least 3 or 4 different ruins. After that we went to nearby Kinichna, which is just as impressive and climbable. Our guide gave us tons of information en route and at the site, with very good english. Our driver was very professional did a great job as well. They provided water, sodas and a sandwich/chips/crackers on leaving Kinichna. The only negative of the whole experience (5 stars overall!!) was that you need a LOT of bug spray. The black flies swarmed us with the "orange can" OFF provided by the tour, fortunately I had the "green can" with me that kept them at bay for the rest of the trip. I HIGHLY recommended this tour and tour company, especially to stay clear of the tourist traps like Chacchoben.

This is what a Mayan experience should be. No T-shirt salesman, No crowds. My wife and me were the only people there at the time. It was like we were the first people to discover the place. The ruins and cravings are not to be missed. If your a birder, this is a great place. Lots of species moving all over the area. It only cost $4.50 WHAT A BARGAIN..
