“Ideal get-away for health, relaxation, and weather.”
Reviewed August 25, 2011

Absolutely loved this two week time in Ixtapan. The elevation is over 6,000 feet so the air is crisp and clean, and the setting is like a tropical rain forest with beautiful landscaping and water falls. August is considered the 'rainy season', but all of the rain occured at night while we were there, so every day was truly perfect weather - high 70's for the day, and high 60's for the evening.

The spa staff became like family, and many friends were made around the tables at meal time. The morning began with a brisk hour walk with yoga, pilates, tennis lessons, and aerobics available throughout the morning. The spa treatments throughout the day were heavenly - massages, facials, wraps, etc. were part of the package.

This was my first time at Hotel Spa Ixtapan, but it will not be my last. This was one of the cleanest places I have every stayed. Also, many of the people I met were there for their 15th or 35th time!!

There is something for everyone here. While many people come with "just the girls" we have started to come with our young families. This Spa and Golf resort has activities and amenities that appeal to all. Pools, golf, tennis, game room, movie theater. There's a water park next door, shopping, sightseeing to caves and ruins. Let's not forget about the daily massages, treatments, facials and a lot more. We will keep coming back.

The fact that guests keep coming back year after year after year should tell you something. Many people we met had come multiple times. Now, this is not a super luxurious Red Door-type spa, but it is excellent on its own terms. The rooms are kind of quirky but just fine....and who spends all his/her time in a hotel room in a place like this? Some have complained about hard beds, but we found them wonderful. Spa cuisine is well presented, well prepared and filling, but if you want to splurge on calories, there is a regular menu as well. The grounds are gorgeous and beautifully maintained with two pools and outside eating and lounging areas. Not only are massages and other spa treatments include in the price, but also various fitness classes (aerobics, water aerobics, yoga) and a well outfitted fitness studio. There is also golf and tennis on the grounds and lessons are included in the package price. The staff is extremely accomodating....particularly the restaurant staff who will create almost any dish (within reason) or add extra fruits, veggies etc. to your liking. The little town of Ixtapan is a short walk away and the Sunday market is not to be missed. People come here to shop at Rossy's for her fabulous creams. Trips can be arranged to Taxco (silver capital) or Cuernevaca or you can do it on your own much cheaper by going to the bus station and starting from there. This is the second trip my sister and I have made here and it looks like it is going to be a yearly event. You simply cannot get a better bargain that this resort and spa.

I am just finishing up a wonderful 10 day spa revitelization package. The cost is 1/4 the cost of the spa's in the US. This place offers everything. Great services, wonderful classes, such as aerobics, water aerobics, salsa aerobics, yoga, morning walks, swiming, pilates along with great spa food that tastes nothing like you would expect. I was so suprised at each meal wich burst with flavor. I came here alone, but within a day I had lots of new friends. The spa services are also outstanding. You name it, they probably offer it. You can also book a short spa package and then add additional hotel days and spread out your treatments. They also have a beautiful 18 hole golf course near the hotel. I took golf lessons and had a blast. I also took advantage of 100 pesos to practice almost as long as I wanted to hit. DO NOT be fooled by the news stories. This place is safe, the town is safe and all the people at the hotel and in town that I met were wonderful. There is a great market in town on Sundays. I have met a number of people who come back year after year. This place is truely a bargin.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool, it is quiete.

I went in January 2011 with my sister, daughter (21) and husband. We flew into Toluca and were met at the airport by the spa and taken to the hotel. The hotel was beautiful, spa services were fantastic (they are a little more relaxed about nudity than we are in the US though, LOL no biggie to derobe in front of your masseuse ) the golf, tennis and personal training was all great too. All the guests were extremely friendly to our group, the morning hike at the golf course was challenging for those of us not used to the high altitude, a wonderful workout. The spa cuisine was healthy, filling, more basic, but still very good. Bingo and movies will take you into late night if you can stay up that late after all the physical activity. LOL Rooms were basic, the bathrooms were a little "rustic" (this is mexico) but if you wanted something more luxurious you could shower at the spa, the locker rooms and showers were large and plush. Beds were a little hard, as were the pillows, so i would recommend at least some pillows from home. The staff was friendly and accomodating, from the restaurant (David) to the front desk, and all the lovely spa ladies (facials were my favorite). Be sure to bring at least $100+ in 1's and 5's for tips, although if you run out of change most of the masseuse and personal trainers have change , and be sure to tip freely. You will have a wonderful stay and there are alot of people who have been coming here for YEARS who will tell you about some of the local places to visit and go to if you find you need other things to do.

The spa value is fantastic. Each package has many treatments and there is such a variety of activities that you can be busy all day. We had very little time to explore the town or even sit by the pool.

The spa cuisine is very good. The meals are filling and if you want more food, you can always order it. The staff are very friendly, helpful, and willing to accomodate your needs.

All of the spa guests that we met were repeat visitors. We were the only first timers. That says alot about the spa.

The rooms have two double beds with a king size bedroom available for a higher price. We ended up staying with the double beds as the upgrade price was $70 per night. Since the spa was not busy, we weren't sure why they didn't offer to provide an upgrade for a reduced rate.

My husband and I both booked spa packages. For the most part, the spa seems to cater to women. My husband was one of the few men at the spa and his experience was not as positive as mine (e.g., service providers showing up late, steam room not working, etc.).

My tip is to fly into Toluca, the ride to the spa is shorter than if you fly to Mexico City and from what I hear that is an airport to avoid. One drawback for me was the flight to Toluca left from Houston early in the AM. so this required a stay for one night in Houston. I would much rather spend a night in Houston and have a shorter ride to the spa. Also, Toluca airport is clean, new and small, extremely easy to get in and out and very friendly employees.
