“A wonderful place to be”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Lake Santa Ana is one of the most places you cant miss, if you are in Romania. This lake offer so much, just because the nature do all the work. The way to the lake is magical almost like the lake itself. The road go through a forest, and if its your lucky day, you probably meet some wild horses on the side of the road. The magical trees, the smell of the leaves and shadows that cover the sunny road, give`s all a feeling of a magical atmosphere.

You can choose to pay 20 RON to enter to the Lake. Then you step down to the lake. You don`t know what to expect. The color of the water, and the forest that gives to the lake a huge hug around him, is a jaw-dropping.

After you fixed your jaws you can rent a boat, dive or just swim in the cold something water...

You can stay there all day. Just don`t forget to bring enough food and drinks.

“It must be magical in the early morning, if you are the only one there !”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

My visit was at the height of holiday season. In consequence, there were hundreds of people sunbathing on the shores of this beautifully situated body of water- surrounded by the forested rim of its volcano. There is not much else to do here, except swim, have a picnic or eat at a small restaurant. It seems possible to walk all the way around the lake.

There is a small chapel, set back from the water.

However, once you walk away from the water, through the inevitable deposits of human excrement, you get into the peace of a semi-forest. Birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and other insects proliferate.

“Unique lake in unique surroundings”
Reviewed October 20, 2010

This is the only lake in Eastern Europe with a volcanic origin.
The lake is not fed by any brook or stream, the only water supply is the rain, therefore its water is nearly as pure as distilled water.
The best time to visit is summer time when you can take a refreshing bath in the lake or hire a boat.
The lake is beautiful, it is surrounded by dense forest.
Accomodation options are varied: you can camp near the lake or get a room at the one of the hotels in Balvanyos where you can also have a traditional transylvanian meal.
If you get there, visit the Mohos peat-bog, too. This was also a lake, 3 times the size of the St Ann lake, but it got filled up with the overgrowth of vegetation and so a peat bog was formed. Mohos is special because rare plants grow here dating from the ice era.

“Volcanic paradise in the Mohoş Nature Reserve”
Reviewed January 9, 2007

Situated in the Eastern Carpathians of Romania, Lake Sfânta Ana, a lake formed in the crater of an extinct volcano, is what I personally believe to be one of Europes greatest natural wonders. Surrounded on every side by lush green forest, sprouting from rich volcanic soil, the lake is the perfect place to go for a walk a swim or even a row in one of the boats for hire...be careful though, the lake's a lot bigger than it seems and you'll probably find yourself exhausted if you row too far! Boat hire is very cheap and the lake is free to enter, there are also some small stalls and café/bars near the entrance by the carpark. Toilet facilities by the lake are of the "natural" type i.e. holes in the ground surrounded by wooden walls, but it's all part of getiing in touch with mother nature...even if it does smell a little! I would definitely recommend a visit to this natural phenomenon before it diappears as the lake has been gradually drying up over the past couple of centuries. A perfect place for a family day out.
