“Delightful place”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

The best of east and west - local charm and western amenities, food is delicious, sunsets are spectacular. But probably the day trips provided by the owner and one of which we took, was the most unexpected surprise. Away from the main road, occupied by tourist bus companies, down narrow, twisted roads used only by locals, to the villages where people do not dress for tourists and where you can get a glimpse of real life. Outstanding place, great people.

Hi Natasha W,
Thank you very much indeed for your kind review. We're happy you enjoyed the tour up in the mountains, away from the touristy areas. We have some of the best scenery in northern Thailand, when you get away from the main roads.
Best wishes

Ian and Vanessa really made us very welcome and we can't recommend this quiet little place highly enough. Chiang Saen is a nice quiet little place, perfect for a get-away-from-it-all type trip but a couple of days is probably enough. Food traditonal Thai was also very good.

Hi Rollo S,
Thank you very much for your review. It is most satisfying that you would highly recommend us. It depends what you like, but many people stay here for 4 or 5 days and still wish they had stayed longer, as the reviewer below noted. There are a lot of things to see up here as well as it being a wonderful location to relax in.
Best wishes

I loved the individual bungalows with the view of the lake. The owners are charming and the owner's mother cooks one f the best Thai meals I ever had.
Stay here and skip Chaing Rai and go biking hiking and kayaking

Hotel accommodation doesn't get much better than this; the location is perfect, the rooms are delightful, the view across the lake at sunset magnificent, the food is superb, the atmosphere is casual and the staff and service are outstanding.
My partner and I stayed at Viang Yonok during the lead up to the Loi Krathong celebrations at the end of November. We were booked in for 5 nights and in the end it really wasn't long enough. Ian, Vassana, Deng, Mama and Chai all contributed to make this a very memorable stay.
Apart from relaxing, walking, cycling, exploring the town and spending an amazing evening in Chiang Saen, for the full moon Loi Krathong celebration on the banks of the Mekong River, we also managed to fit in two huge road trips with Chai. One along the Laos border in the mountains and surrounding countryside, and the other along the Burmese border and mountains. Thank you Chai for being one of the most 'talkative' guides we've ever come across and one of the funniest, we thoroughly enjoyed your company.
Evening meals at Viang Yonok were always relaxed and informal occasions, creating an atmosphere that we were all Ian and Vassana's invited personal friends. We were also lucky enough one night to experience an impromptu showing of their rather unusual holiday video and Ian's rock guitar performance...awesome guys!
Thoroughly recommend this very different approach to a hotel, we will definitely be back in the near future.

Hi Jbabe57,
Thank you very much for a lovely review. We're happy you enjoyed our unconventional approach to running a hotel. It seems to work for most people, as long as they are not looking for a 5 star hotel. We'd love to see you back here again and you can explore some more of this wonderful area.
Happy New Year

I highly recommend a stay at Viang Yonok. We stayed for 3 nights in November and had a lovely time. From Vassana (known as Jim) picking us up from the next town when we missed getting off at Chiang Saen (communication problem with the driver), to Ian taking us into town and giving us a tour before dropping us off at the Hall of Opium, nothing was too much trouble for our hosts.

The hotel is about 4 kms out of town, overlooking a peaceful lake. Our bungalow was "Woodpecker" (shown in the photo above on Trip Advisor). It was beautiful and the king size 4 post bed was very comfortable. Sitting in the rocking chair on our balcony, watching the sun set over the lake, was heaven. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained, and the pool, though small, was very deep and refreshing.

The open air dining area is beautiful. The service from Daeng and the food from Mom were exceptional. Each day we were asked what we would like to eat but we always left it up to them and were never disappointed. Mom's fruit pancakes for breakfast were amazing (and huge). Dinner usually consisted of 3 - 4 dishes and they were all delicious. We only had one lunch there, on the day we were leaving, and Daeng suggested Pad Thai - it was the best I have had anywhere!

Either Ian or Jim would pop by to chat at breakfast or dinner to see what our plans were and if we needed any advice or transport. They would arrange to take us into town and we would catch a tuk tuk back (very cheap).

Chiang Saen was a highlight of our month in Thailand. As yet, it is very untouched by tourists as most people seem to stay in Chiang Rai and do day trips to the Golden Triangle. We loved the ruined wall of the town and the many ruined temples - one of which is still used as a practising temple today. We were fortunate enough to visit this temple while there was a Buddhist festival on.

The Hall of Opium is well worth a visit. We are not really into museums but we found it really interesting.

When we were leaving, Ian arranged a car to take us to Chiang Rai and Daeng came for the ride (had to do the shopping for the hotel). Daeng made the trip so enjoyable. She explained lots of things we passed along the way and even stopped and bought us some super sweet pineapples she had been telling us about. Once in Chiang Rai, she pointed out a few places we might be interested in visiting. She is one of the loveliest and most interesting people I have ever met and hope to catch up with her again.

Pro's: Beautiful comfortable accommodation in lovely surroundings; Lovely hosts & staff; Great food

Cons: Loved the look of the timber and stone floor in the bathroom but found it a bit impractical, especially at night. Had trouble getting the TV to work.

We hope to visit Viang Yonok again.

Ian & Jim, I hope you enjoyed your holiday and your bottoms are not too saddle sore! Thanks for making our stay so enjoyable. Best wishes to you both and could you please pass on our thanks to Daeng.

Hi Lanny48,
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely long review. That is most helpful.
We're happy you enjoyed the beautiful location, the room, the food and the service. I'm sorry the TV didn't work, we do have some issues with the service. But I believe TV will be irrelevant very soon and that is why we have invested in our own fibre optic cable from Chiang Saen for our internet / wifi system. It is interesting to see more and more guests arriving with their own smart phones and tablet computers, so it is good that we have a guaranteed high speed link. Many people now watch TV news and movies on their own tabs.
The bathrooms are popular with most people, but yes, not as practical as a simple tiled floor.
Thanks again and Best wishes

Everything about this place is outstanding, especially the owners and workers. Everybody bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable. The accommodations are comfortable and aesthetically lovely. The food is great and made to order with our strange requests (vegetarian, diabetic). We left something's behind in our room and Ian went out of his way to drop it off for us at a pick up place. When we checked out, they even gave us gifts. You can't ask for more. This is more like a guest house than a hotel, so if you prefer the sterility of a Four Seasons, this may not be for you. But you'd be missing something great.

Room Tip: Lake side is lovely with beautiful sunsets.

This is not your traditional 5-Star hotel and it does not pretend to be one. The Viang Yonok is a hotel owned by people who want to make you feel as being in a 5-Star place without the artificial cache. It is down to earth and you feel pampered by the owners as if you were part of the extended family. The location does the rest, settled at the shore of a beautiful lake - by the way; go out with a kayak 8:00am and experience the landscape. We stayed at the Viang Yonok for 3 days and truelly enjoyed the hospitality of Vassana and Ian, they know what it takes to be 5-Star hosts.

If you plan to travel to the Golden Triangle to visit the Opium Museum, spare this part and go the Hall of Opium, which is about half a mile up north out of town. A visit to Chiang Saen should also be on your list but Ian will tell you more when you arrive.

We will be back for sure.
