Recently, I visited the Opium Museum for the second time. It was as exhilarating an experience as the first time. The museum's design is impressive. It is a truly exciting learning experience and one gets an excellent historical perspective, particularly on the opium wars of the 19th century. Something not to be missed.

This review is long overdue, but I had the best experience at this museum in May 2013. My friend and I took a songthaew from Mae Sai to the golden triangle, hopped off for lunch, and walked to the Hall of Opium. Shortly afterwards it started raining. We slowly wandered through the museum, hoping the rain would stop. After spending a ton of time exploring the fantastic exhibits, which gave an incredible overview of the worldwide and regional history of the opium trade, we decided to leave and see if we could get a taxi in the rain. We had spent so long in the museum, the entire staff was waiting for us so that they could go home. With us only speaking English, we struggled but learned quickly that not only are there no taxis in the area, but that the songthaews stopped running an hour before. Stranded with no way to get to the bus back to Chiang Rai in time, we were in big trouble. Recognizing this, two female staff pulled around their truck and told us to get in. They drove us directly to the last bus of the day, which we made with 2 minutes to spare. I'll be eternally grateful for their help!

Visited the hall of opium while staying in Anatara Golden Triangle resort. The museum provides a lot of information regarding opium and the exhibits are very well made. Definitely worth paying a visit when you are in the area.

This is one of the best museums I have ever been to. It was incredibly informative and the presentation was visually appealing. The whole experience was quite thought provoking.

The museum presents a history of opium usage from ancient times to the Middle Ages, describes the Anglo-Chinese Opium Wars and opium usage in Thailand. It was fascinating to learn more about the period during which opium was legal in Thailand and the Kingdom was earning 20% of its taxes from licensed opium dens.

The last part of the exhibit is about the damage that drug addiction does to individuals and society and presents a number of approaches to combat this.

We have taken annual visits to Chiang Mai since 2007 with the best intention to make the extra time to fly or drive over to Chiang Saen to visit the Hall of Opium museum and just never did, that is, until December 2013.

We were blown away. This is a top quality museum, rivaling standards anywhere in the world; it is high tech with lots of interactive exhibits. As another reviewer mentioned, it is noticeable it is well put together and well funded.

The subject matter is heavy and was eye opening for me. I found it sad how greedy people can become with little thought or care how their actions will affect their fellow human beings. My daughter, 11 years old, talked about what she learned at the museum for several months afterwards. Hopefully the devastation drugs can do to one's life will make an impression on her forever.

If you are anywhere near Chiang Saen, it's worth the effort to make a trip to the Hall of Opium Museum. I wish we’d done it sooner.
