Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort
Ranked #2 of 9 Hotels in Chiang Saen
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 1, 2014

My husband and I just completed a 4 day and 3 night stay at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort. The entire experience was nothing short of perfect. The Elephant Camp is comprised of 27 elephants and their Mahouts. The Camp is shared by Anantara and the adjacent Four Seasons Resort. The elephant experience is the only reason to stay at either of these resorts, otherwise one could stay in Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai at a fraction of the cost. We contacted Wachi at the Anantara by telephone and e-mail before we left the States to inquire about transfers from the Chiang Rai airport to the resort, resort activities and to make a special request to visit the must-see White Temple in Chiang Rai upon our departure. Wachi’s responses were timely and complete. We booked our stay and, shortly thereafter were on our way. When we arrived at the Chiang Rai Airport, we were greeted by Anantara personnel. Since we chose the VIP Regal Arrival, we were then driven to Chiang Saen, where we met our resort attaché (“Tuk”) and boarded a long boat for a trip up the Mekong River to the resort’s pier. Upon arrival at the pier, accompanied by a Mahout, we rode an elephant to the resort’s hotel lobby. During our stay, Tuk not only anticipated but met our every need. The suites, activity packages, food, beverages and services provided by the staff were absolutely top notch. We assume that the Four Seasons resort at this location is on a par with other Four Seasons resorts at which we have stayed. However, we cannot image why anyone would choose to pay nearly twice the price to stay at the Four Seasons for the same quality experience available at the Anantara.

Room Tip: We recommend that guests stay in the Three Countries Suite 205, located close to the hotel reception...

This was a very tranquil and relaxing weekend experience. The hotel is set in a beautiful natural surrounding and in a very interesting location (overlooking 3 countries). I particularly enjoyed the view from the room. The food and service was impeccable. The elephant experience was worth the effort of waking up early in the morning and on top of that it gives you a good feeling you are helping elephants have a better life.

Room Tip: Rooms in the right wing have stunning view. Make sure you have plenty of time at breakfast, there...

This hotel is hands down one of the best properties in Thailand, and probably one of the most unique and exclusive properties in the world. From the dining experiences, to the elephant bar, to the incredible pool and spa, this hotel has it all. The front office staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the housekeeping team is attentive and efficient, and the dining team is truly one of a kind. I didn't get a chance to experience the spa, but other guests I spoke to who did said it was amazing. I can't say enough about the elephant camp. I have lived and traveled in Thailand for many years, and experienced most of the elephant facilities in the country. This is one of the only hotels with a dedicated Thai non-profit supporting elephants (the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation) and really understands how welfare and conservation can work together to save the endangered Asian elephant. The elephants are extremely well-treated here, as are their mahouts and their families. In addition to mahout training, which teaches you how to be an elephant handler and how to ride an elephant (I had absolutely no concerns riding the elephants; the elephants carry limited weight and only for a short period each day), you can also do the Elephant Learning Experience, which is a great way to learn more about the elephants. This experience allows you to hear from members of the research team working with Think Elephants International (a U.S. non-profit) about elephant welfare and conservation, as well as get an up-close-an-personal experience with the elephants. This experience seems especially great for families and children.

I was traveling with my wife (we were married the day before our arrival) and our families, and we were so humbled by and thankful for the staff's kindness and support.

In summary, I can't say enough about this wonderful hotel - from its staff to its facilities and rooms, it is truly an incredible place to visit. If you are traveling in Thailand, it is absolutely worth the diversion to Chiang Rai.

Room Tip: All of the rooms in this hotel are magical (we saw some of the country-view and pool-view rooms), bu...

Having decided to tour Indochina for a month and been to Thailand many times before, our agent recommended we start with a 2 night stop in Chiang Rai at the Anantara. This was a great call as we hadn't been to Chiang Rai before and two days at this top class hotel was about the right length of time to adjust to Asian time after our journey from the UK. The hotel is in a great setting, the standard of room was excellent and we found the food of a high standard, albeit with only 22% occupancy at the time we stayed there it was very/may be too quiet. There are two restaurants - a open air Thai of course and an air conditioned Italian. With our package came an offer of a free activity each day. What did we do? On the first day we went elephant trekking, as we had always fancied doing this. We're pleased we did but never again - pretty uncomfortable and you are a long way off the ground, which we should of realised we would be of course! It was very well organised and the mahouts were excellent. On the second day we participated in the Thai Cookery Class including the market visit. Quite an early start at 7.30 am but well worth it. The hotel chef, who came to the market with us, was brilliant. Even I can now cook a mean red curry with mixed vegetables! So overall, we were pretty impressed with the Anantara but would not wanted to have stayed there for much longer than 2-3 days.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks the plains

Of the four places we stayed in Thailand, including other luxury accommodations such as Six Senses, the Anantara Golden Triangle was our favorite. The staff members were very attentive and responsive, and remembered our names. They were top-notch hospitality professionals, but in a casual way perfect for the setting.

The facilities are stunning -- a rustic elegance and very well maintained. For our honeymoon, we were graciously upgraded to a suite overlooking the beautiful pool area and elephant pasture; I highly recommend these rooms. It was so relaxing sitting on our balcony watching the sunset listening to the water lapping in the pool and the elephants making all sorts of noises.

The food was fantastic: very flavorful, fresh and authentic Thai. There are many food choices available so we could switch between Thai and Western throughout our stay. Compared to other similar small-scale all-inclusive hotels I've been to, Anantara was the most generous in terms of not limiting the number of meal courses we selected or types of alcohol, etc. Also, little things like complimentary sunscreen at the pool is a nice amenity.

The only disappointment was that some of the tours were unavailable, and the three-country tour is more of touristy market tour (though the guides were great). For some people that may be appealing, but we would have rather spent the day by the pool. The elephant mahout experience was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I'm so glad we had to chance to enjoy. Also loved the cooking class -- the food market tour is really interesting: we learned about and tasted lots of new foods and then prepared dishes in a spectacular kitchen.

Room Tip: The suites are beautiful -- huge walk-in closets to unpack your belongings, overlooking pool and ele...

Spent 4 days on an all inclusive basis (worked very well as in included trips to Myanmar etc). Hotel has a fantastic location on a hillside overlooking the mekong valley, with both Myanmar and Laos in view. Elephants roam fairly freely over the river valley. Room was clean although not specially exciting. Food was excellent, and plentiful. Pool area with infinity pool overlooking the grasslands pretty special.
