Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 22, 2014

As a group we left Chiang Rai to visit the Golden Triangle with no particular timetable and no accommodation in mind. A quick lunch stop on the Mekong over the road from this hotel got us wondering if we could afford this expensive looking hotel. I was elected to negotiate for three rooms and I was pleasantly surprised when I was immediately offered a third off the standard rate. It took little further persuasion to have this small figure include service fees and breakfast. So cheap was it that we all took the more expensive rooms on the top level for better Mekong views.
The rooms were large and one balcony was so big we could easily accommodate six for Sunset Drinks. Beds were huge and the bathrooms excellent. Unfortunately their Cable TV has limited English Channels but we were not there for TV watching
Breakfast in the restaurant was excellent with reasonable farang food available. The views are great from rooms and the restaurant
Everything in town is within walking distance

Room Tip: If offered a high level room, take it even if it is at a small additional fee.

We had one night here en route to Laos. The rooms were a good size with lovely views of the river etc from the balcony. The bathroom was adequate, but would be improved if it was refurbished. The room had coffee making facilities and an easy to use safe.
The buffet lunch was good with plenty of choice. We had a set evening meal included in our trip and not the a la carte menu, so it isn't sensible to judge the meal. However, once I said I was a vegetarian, the staff very quickly provided an egg based dish - not all hotels are as quick to do this.
It was a short walk to see a Buddha etc as well as the opium museum and a number of souvenir stalls. It's worth a walk up the hill behind the hotel to see the views.

As many do, we stayed here for one night during our tour of the northern area. Overall, pleased with the hotel. Location and the afforded views were fine and for some in our small group the unexpected visit to Laos during our river cruise was a plus. Would stay there again.

For starters the hotel is not in the town of Chiang Saen, but in the village of Sop Ruak which is 7 km away. This suited us very well as we wanted to visit the Hall of Opium, which is about 1 km north of the village. We had a large comfortable room, with a balcony looking out at the Golden Triangle. The hotel is a bit dated but very clean and well maintained. The buffet breakfast has lots of variety and the food is tasty. We enjoyed our two day stay at the hotel.

The views from all the bedrooms in this hotel are some of the finest anywhere in Thailand. The hotel faces the border of Burma and across the Mekong river, Laos. Burma is 50 metres away and Laos directly across the Mekong River. Also the gardens surrounding the hotel are well kept and beautiful, these have been improved since our last visit.

The staff are very helpful and willing to go out of their way to improve one's stay. The rooms are comfortable and well maintained. The location is ideal for exploring nearby attractions, including visiting Laos or Burma. This can be done with an excelent in house travel guide.

All in all we had a wonderful stay here over Christams 2013.

I go to the Golden Triangle quite a lot, but this was the first time I had stayed here. We chose this place as they were offering reasonable prices and they could accommodate all of out party of 5. The location is pretty good, but there are hotels with better river views. The hotel and its facilities are a bit disjointed and spread out, but that does have the advantage of good views from the restaurant. The room was quite good and the food at dinner was quite good as well. Breakfast was better with a good selection served buffet style.
The staff were a disappointing being less than helpful.
Overall, this is a place that probably could be really good, but it isn't, I can tick it off the list as I now know what it is like and I don't see myself returning.

When we arrived at the hotel, we stopped our car and had to unload our cases and carry to reception ourselves while the person on reception desk just watched. This was not a good start.
Then we check in and go to the lift to our room, this is when the old smell hits you, it is disgusting the lift is so strong smelling as if it had not been used or cleaned forever.
Then we arrived at our suite, the room smelled even worse, I'm not sure if they have a cleaning rota at this hotel but never have I been to a hotel that smelt like they have shut the doors and just left it for 10 years.
All furniture in the room was at least 10 years old, bar room suite old fashioned, bed the hardest most uncomfortable bed I have had in a hotel. The pillows where also the lumpiest.
This hotel could be amazing if it was updated, they have painted the outside which when you arrive gives you false hope.
We paid 6000 baht a night for our suite which is a high price for Chiang Rai, I booked 2 nights in the end I checked out after the first night as I just did not want to spend anymore time in that hotel or room. When then went to Le Meridien and got a beautiful room for the same price in a modern 5 star hotel.
At best The Imperial Golden hotel should charge around 2000 baht for a suite, until the entire inside has be redecorated and deep cleaned to remove that rancid smell do not stay at this hotel, you will want to check out as soon as you check in,

The one good thing of this hotel and the only thing was that the food was good and a great view from the restaurant at a good price,
