“A rustic hotel with funky furniture and a huge pool!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2013

While other reviewers say that this hotel is "old"and "dated", I would rather describe it as rustic. Yes, the hotel does show its age, with a late 70s, early 80s southern Pinoy vibe. But I appreciate the lush gardens and the greenery outside the dining area, and on the way to my room. The rooms are quite ordinary, almost 80s motel-like in ambience. Aircon is old and a bit noisy, and the bathroom tiles have discoloured over the years.

But I give points for the very friendly staff, who really go out their way to help. One lady even let me use the computer to print out some documents, and she did not charge me for them! The waiters in the restaurant were also attentive, but the breakfast took a long time to arrive, and was pretty ordinary. Also liked the free round-trip airport transfers.

But the main reason why I choose this hotel over others whenever I visit GenSan is the huge olympic-sized pool. I think this is the only hotel in the city that has this. Perfect for laps in between meetings!

Family Country Hotel is one of the more established hotels in General Santos City. Located in Mateo Road, Lagao, General Santos City, the hotel boasts of a central location in the very heart of downtown Gensan, yet is hidden from the main highway so we are assured of a quiet and peaceful stay. Depending on your pace, the malls are a ten-minute walk away! SM City, Gaisano Mall, KCC Mall and Robinsons, they’re all on one thoroughfare, J. Catolico Sr. Avenue.

Family Country Hotel has 76 guest rooms that are all air-conditioned. WiFi is available at the lobby and in all guest rooms (although the service provider was still fine-tuning the wireless connection in the second level during our stay). The hotel has its own restaurant, the Café Leticia, where we have our daily breakfasts.

Probably the biggest come-on of Family Country Hotel is its Convention Centre. Event organizers will be spared of the expenses in ferrying guests from the hotel to the nearest convention centre since it is just right across the hotel lobby! Family Country Hotel’s Convention Centre can host group functions as it accommodate up to 1,000 people! Among the big events that have chosen Family Country Hotel and Convention Centre as its favorite venue is the National Tuna Congress. This year will be the 12th time the important event is held at the hotel.

Finally, the hotel also has a 25-meter swimming pool, the biggest of any hotel in General Santos City!

Room Tip: Rooms nearer to the lobby have a stronger wi-fi connection

Let me start by tell that I booked the Presidential Suite more than 9 months before our arrival and had many Emails to confirm our booking for 16 nights and many international phone call and even had my brother inlaw who lives in Gensan to visit the hotel 4 times to confim our booking,
The free shuttle was there to pick us up which was good since the last time I stayed at the hotel the shuttle was not there to pick me up, the driver was very pleasant and on arrival to the reception tried to book in and ther said we have your booking for 2 nights to which I replied no 16 nights and after a long time sorting it out and of coarse the the managers not come out to sort it out.
And yes the hotel really needs a face lift the decor is pretty bad and the room needs a good spring clean the wardrobe was disgusting I put my back pack in there and then when I pulled it out it was covered in dust and I mean covered.
The bath room was dirty and for the whole 16 nights some markes never got cleaned the bath was blocked which they fixed ther next day and while having a shower we had to use 1 of the towels as a levie to stop flowing all over the floor.
Apart from that hotel was OK the cafe staff were pleasant and nice, food was not that good a bit pricey and not that tastey breakfast was fair but the same thing almost every day,if you order toast with your food they cook it then the wait person cooks the toast while it sits on the counter and gets cold and the butter is rock hard you can not spread it,the room service food was very bad cold and very small portions for ther price.
Location is good close to all the malls except it smells like a sewer on the walk to the malls.
Airconditioner worked well but very noisey the best part about our room was that the fridge worked well kept drinks cool which is very hard to get in Asia most fridges are very poor.
The pool is good it will probably be the only reason we will come back to this hotel as my daughter enjoyed her time in the pool but the kids pool is to deep for a kids pool.
The Wi Fi is so slow and it needs an upgrade it is so slow its not worth using (please upgrade)
The televisions need upgrading and need more chanells
By the way it wasn't a mistake with the 20th century I know its the 21st now..

Yes the place is dated in its decor but its very clean, very quite, very reasonably priced , great real 25m lap pool (with kiddies pool) good to very good restaurant with superb attentative staff,

I will give it 4 stars but I was close to 5

If you need a place to stay at Gen san and dont need a ultra modern look, then this is the place

2 to 3 minutes from G mall

The decor is indeed like two decades old. Even the taxi driver said the hotel is "old". But despite its age, the hotel is located conveniently near three malls (KCC, Gaisano and the newly opened SM City), all it takes is a tricycle ride costing PHP8 per person.

The matrimonial rooms are separated by wooden walls, good thing there was not much noise when we stayed over. There is an empty mini-fridge where you can store items you've purchased from the nearby malls or stalls. Instant coffee is provided, although you'll have to ask for drinking water for boiling (which they give you in a pitcher provided with the room).

The ladies at the reception area are friendly and accommodating. One gripe I have is that the breakfast which is normally provided free is only available from 615AM, which is when the restaurant opens. If you are taking an early morning flight out of GenSan, they won't be able to provide you breakfast, even in take out boxes.

Overall, this hotel is better suited for bigger groups like those attending conventions.

This sprawling establishment is located off a fairly poorly lit side street 300 metres from one of General Santos' main thoroughfares. This gives the advantage of no noise from motorbikes when one is trying to sleep at night. It is close to the modern KCC Mall and not all that far to the other two malls (Gaisano and, further away, Robinsons) (with SM City soon to open in I gather August 2012).

The main building is two storey with the lobby being quite airy.

The rooms seriously need demolition. While maybe once up to date in the early 1980s, their tone is set by a list of 20 'house ruls' on the back of each room's door: mainly a list of 'don'ts.'

My room had a balcony overlooking some pleasant greenery frequented by small native birds. The curtains were of very poor quality and did not totally block natural light.

The bed was reasonably comfortable and had a top sheet which I prefer to a doona. The small CRT television had an excllent range of cable TV channels, including Australia Network and the good Catholic channel EW.

The wardrobe and other furniture was in poor condition. The airconditioner was noisy: I had trouble restarting it as I didn't realise that one needed to turn on a light switch as well as the aircon control to operate it. Despite its noise, it was effective.

The bathroom was similarly 1970s in style with a cracked handbasin and sadly fairly tepid hot water - not good enough in 2012 in the fast growing city that Gen San is.

Lighting in the bathroom was however good as it was recessed.

Breakfast was better than I thought. I asked for a pancake and a mango juice and received a bonus plate of beautiful mango, rockmelon and pineapple, all fresh for a great taste of the tropics. I had declined the three Filipino set choices on offer so if you want other things, ask.

I used the hotel pool which is across the road. It is large: either 20 or 25 metres long, with an atached wading pool. It was clean although there was scale on some tiles. Its ambience was not helped by the closed restaurant around it and the generators for the adjacent KCC Mall on top of an ugly concrete structure. The pool similarly had numerous rules such as a roped off area where if one was wet, one should not walk.

What saved this hotel from a '2 out of 5' rating by me was the friendly staff who allowed me to use the hotel's sole PC, as well as being genuinely friendly and helpful.

It is unlikely to happen, but the whole place needs to start again. It is outdated for 2012 despite its huge pro of being off the main road. It increasingly faces more modern competitors that I have yet to try.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floor behind checkin as it appears that the rooms to the other end of th...
