For our Bicol tour, I have based my accommodation on Trip Advisor and saw that Balay dela Ram holds the top spot for B&B location. Prior to making any reservations, I contacted the place and Jess (manager) was gracious enough to entertain my questions about the place and region.

While the offer was basic (Bed and Breakfast), the service was very good, staffs were courteous, place was clean, and loving the homey vibe.

If and ever I will be in the region again, definitely staying at Balay.

Thanks a lot for your beautiful review. Good to hear that you liked the homey feeling of Balay de la Rama. As you would expect from such a place, this was previously a house before becoming a B&B. Since your last stay we have improved our service and would enjoy to see you around again. Balay de la Rama, your home in Bicol

A wonderful bed and breakfast in Daraga/Legaspi. The owners Jess and Karen were very helpful and accomodating. The breakfast was fresh, cooked while you wait. Our room was on the third floor facing a big mango tree which absorbs the street noise. It's a good size room with own shower and bath. We would have preferred the room facing the volcano but was occupied when we arrived, but no worries because there's a receiving room and a balcony overlooking the volcano on the same floor. My wife and I loved to hangout in the balcony in the evening with fresh air after a tiring day. Jess recommended the Albay tour to us since we were there for a short time. It covered all the spots in the area and took one whole day. Our guide was Vani, who was very knowledgeable, respectful and pleasant. We wanted to taste authentic Bicol recipes so during the the early part of our tour, Vani recommended for us to buy lunch "to go" in a local food joint. I tell you that was one good lunch.

We often travel with friends but this one was the exception. During our stay at Balay, my wife and I had wished how we would have enjoyed it a lot more with our friends. Thanks Jess, Karen and Vani.

Room Tip: When staying choose the room on the 3rd floor with balcony and facing the volcano.

We stayed for 6 days in the balay de la rama and were very satisfied! This was one of the best places we came across on our one year trip. Jess the owner and his wife will help you with every kind of activity you require from whale shark interaction to an atv ride on the mayon vulcano! Every morning you will start with a good and tasty breakfast.

Thank you for our nice time at your place!

We booked a deluxe room and chose the bedroom on the lower level. That is probably the best room in the house (see pictures). It was very quiet since there were no adjoining rooms, huge(!!), had a TV, very private, very clean and neat, and was right next door to the dining room where we had breakfast. Specify the room at the lower level when you're booking. It is worth every penny. The only drawback to this room is the absence of wifi signal. I had to go to the main floor lobby for internet access. That, however, is a minor inconvenience. I still recommend booking this room.

The hotel is not easy to find at first. The gate is narrow and not easy to detect from the street. But once we got our bearings, we knew where to get off when riding public jeepneys. From Legazpi, it is immediately after a curve that turns to the right where the Daraga-Legazpi street (the route that the jeepneys take) merges with the Maharlika Highway. The concrete island that divides the two streets where they merge has bright reflectors at night and are easy to see.

We chose to stay here because it was central to the places that we wanted to see, ie. the Cagsawa ruins, the Daraga church and the city of Legazpi. We also didn't have to fight traffic to get to the airport, unlike if we stayed at a hotel in Legazpi.

One drawback is parking.. there isn't any. A minor improvement I'd suggest is to allow guests to pre-order their breakfast or provide more choices. We had pork tocino both days which wasn't great because we don't eat pork. We asked for fish (tuyo) but they had none.

The owner, Jess, is very hands on and accommodating. He will provide information on places to see, jeepney routes, and other local info. Pride in running this hotel shows in every detail. I wished we stayed here for a week! One reviewer published the email address and direct phone number of the owner. Use it and book directly.

If you're going to Legazpi, stay here.

Thanks a lot for your review, this always helps us to improve our service. We know that our gate is small and not very catchy from the street. Will be trying to correct this in the near future. We have been trying so far to give a nice atmosphere in the house for our guests. Still a lot of work ahead but slowly getting there. Thanks for mentioning you liked our place so much.
Regarding the location as you mentioned we are very nicely located close to Cagsawa Ruins & Daraga Church with Mt Mayon in the Backyard. Hope to see you again, next time you are traveling to the philippines. Balay de la Rama your home away from home.

The owner is very friendly and helpful and recommends many activities that can be done with public transportation. We also saw whale sharks in Legazpi when there was no whale shark in Donsol!!! So we changed our plans and cancelled Donsol, but stayed 3 days in Balay de la Rama.

He is always trying to explain Philippine culture and recommended us typical Philippine activities like coq fights and balut. He also offered a tour on his own coconut farm (210 peso per person) where he explains how to grow different vegetables and fruits. And we could eat as much as we wanted. Coconut, kakao, bananas, ... Very interesting and tasty.

Great stay with very friendly staff

Thanks for your review. Listening to our guests has always a moto for us. We are very happy that you have seen the whale sharks not in Donsol but in Legazpi instead. The coconut farm tour is indead something different and we are glad to hear that you like our coconuts, kakao and bananas and the knowledge which goes with it! Hope to see you again in the philippines. BALAY DE LA RAMA your home in the philippines.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the Bicolano language, "Balay" means house, and we strive to be just that, your home away from home but with the backyard view of Mayon Volcano, to add a bit of spice to it. Balay de la Rama is a six-room family house, with six spacious rooms available for short-term homestay. Like any provincial home, it has big windows to promote natural ventilation, and indeed, the gentle, or sometimes stalwart breezes are enough to lull you to sleep as you take your afternoon siesta by the wooden sofa, or better yet, on the hammock by the balcony. If by any chance it is summer, and the mango tree is in full bloom, you can spend afternoons picking mango, or if that is too much effort, you can wait for them to fall, so you can eat them with hot bagoong (shrimp paste). If you’d rather read than be hit by falling mangoes, then the owner’s personal collections are free for you to browse. Come dinnertime, you can join the family meal to sample that spicy Bicolano cooking, such as "pinangat," or "ginantaang gulay," or you can request for that poor man’s fare, such as tinapa (smoked fish) or "tuyo" (salted fish), if you suddenly crave for them. We won't force you to eat "balut" (fertilized duck egg), but would love to see your priceless expression as you try. If you came to Bicol to see moody, fiery Mayon, all you need to do is cast a sideways glance by the window, and there it is. But we know you may want to swim with the whale sharks in Donsol, wakeboard in CWC or island-hop in Caramoan, then this is a great jump-off point with easy access to all kinds of transport to your destination. The land at which Balay de la Rama stands has been with the dela Rama family for more than a century. While Balay itself isn't ancient, the warm family spirit and hospitality is. Your Bicolana host is herself an avid backpacker, but knows that indeed, there is no place like home. ... more   less
