“Great experience on the rush”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

I was very happy with the way the room turned out it was more than I expected from a B&B. it would put some hotels to shame. Owner and staff were very helpful with all my request since we had to do everything in a matters of a day and a half. The place had a nice comfortable vibe to it. Breakfast was great serving size was very good. Overall value for money and much more.

View, atmosphere, people, help, advice, local tastes, quality of the house, nice rooms with balconies and very good standard furnitures: these are some of the things you will find at Balay de la Rama. We have had a lot of good experience with the tenants, Karen and Jess. If you want to feel the real guests of the family, go to speak with them. They are just waiting to become your friends! We have followed Karen to the market, while she was buying the breakfast food. She has helped us to choose evening food for ourselves. There is a very nice garden in the house and Jess organized a barbecue for us in the evening, after Karen prepared her secret marinade for the squids, the meat, and fishes we chose together in the morning. I was not so convinced about Philippino food before this stay, but the food made by Karen and the restaurants of Legaspi they recommended changed my mind.
We have also been in the coconut farm of the house, we have taken some bananas, cacao, chile directly from the trees, ate them and brought some back at the guest house. If you ask Jess and Karen, they can organize for you some camping nights in the coconut farm, with the wonderful view on the Mont Mayon!

Jess is full of advice about the region. Apart from nice places to eat, he knows where to buy souvenirs, where to go for good hiking trips, and he can even sometimes come with you, and discover new tracks if you're opened to it.
After our stay at Balay de la Rama, he has advised us to spend some days to a very nice highland with great beaches. We were the only tourists in the whole highland and we borrowed the tents available in the guest house and slept on the beach, because there was not any proper tourist accommodation. If you're looking after places far from the touristic paths, ask him, he will have precious recommendations.

Room Tip: The ones with balconies and view on Mont Mayon are the best!

Hi Maud, thank you very much for your review. It is true that you have done a lot when coming in Balay de la Rama. Between the coconut farm, the local market ,the hiking and the beach (or should I say the highland :-) ) Jess and Caren have been wonderful hosts as usual and they were able to advise you all the local places that only local can know.
We really wish to see you again and merry christmas and happy new year

I stayed here for one night. It was a very comfortable stay. The room was quite spacious as well as the bathroom. There was a a lot of storage space. The room had ac and multiple light sources. The bed was a queen but felt like a king. The room didn't have a tv but I didn't need one. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. All in all a very nice stay.

Previous good reviews were very true! It was our home away from home indeed. We arrived 25 November 2012 and stayed for 3 nights. We really don't know how to describe our stay as we are still overwhelmed with everything. Here are the reasons why you should stay at Balay de la Rama:

- rooms are very spacious (pwedeng magballroom! at kasya helepad sa loob :D)
- hearty breakfast (tapa..banana jam - soon to be available for public consumption as promised, malunggay pandesal and longganisa)
- hospitable and friendly staff :) (forgot to ask the name of Ate who always cook our breakfast)
- rooms were decorated to promote the local Abaca products
- owners are green warriors :D (they managed to carefully select appliances that are eco-friendly)
- accessible to almost all tourist spots in Legaspi and Albay (seriously, 8-12Php jeepney fare)
- they have Kylie <3 a.k.a. Sabelle, Paula, etc. (Wednesday breakfast was named after her! Anina Kylie is her real name :) she only knows Bicol dialect but she can surely win your hearts with her charm...and then she'll bring her toys.. and toys.. and toys..)

we just hope they'll have TV sets on the other rooms as well :)
Balay de la Rama is a highly recommended place to stay at if you will visit Legaspi.

Room Tip: Rooms with veranda has Mayon View. Room beside the kitchen has a garden view and a TV set.

Thank you very much. This the kind of comments we love to hear. As you mentioned Balay de la Rama is first a house. We want to keep this vibe in the air which make it so special (thanks to Anina for it!). We are working hard to provide to our guests the best place to explore the surrounding Albay. The Banana jam has been a success and we will be soon able to sell it to our guests. Follow us on Facebook to keep in touch with the latest update. Hope to see you again

We stayed here for 3D/2N, booked the reservation 3 months in advance just to make sure that they can accommodate us since we've read that they only have few rooms available. Booking was so easy, Jess immediately respond to SMS or FB messages. We're able to reserved one of their deluxe room.

We we're quite disappointed upon arrival, it seems that the owner was not expecting or didn't know we are arriving that day. She asked us when did we booked the reservation and to whom we booked it with. This information should be on their file. The room was not yet ready so we have to wait for 10-15 minutes for them to prepare it. They gave the deluxe room at the GF, the room was huge to accommodate two guests with wifi and cable tv. Altough, we complain that we don't like the smell of the room, as per the owner it has not been occupied for quite sometime. She offered the other room at the 3rd floor but we chose the one at the GF.

The best that this hotel can offer is it is accessible to most of the tourist spots in Legaspi. About 5-10 minutes to Cagsawa ruins, 10-15 minutes to Lignon Hill and Albay Park Wildlife.

Upon check out, we have to wait for 10 minutes for someone to assist us, we need to press the door bell twice. We can even run away without paying. I would suggest for them to have a reception area where they can have a log book for all their guests and just to make sure they can easily assist those guests who will check out.

Overall, I will still recommend this hotel for budget travellers like us. More power to Balay and thank you!

'Twas our first time to set eyes on Legaspi..and I can say that we made our best decision of choosing Balay de la Rama as our accommodation. Unlike the typical Inns or hotels, Balay de la Rama offers such kind of hospitality. Staffs are very helpful and indeed, FRIENDLY.. :)) You can even have time to chat with them and hear stories about the places you wanna visit. Ask them the most convenient and less expensive way of transportation to the places you wanted to see and they'll give you infos.

We stayed here for 3 days/2 nights and all I can say is, "WE'RE VERY MUCH SATISFIED"!

It is a great experience for us..and as the saying goes, "first impressions lasts"..
Yes, It will last. We will never forget that at our first time, disappointments has never been an issue..in fact, we've never encountered any types of discomfort or inconvenience at all !
We're even planning to come back here again next year..and still we will choose Balay de la Rama..(yes, you've read it right..we're choosing it AGAIN!)

Very near the airport, and it is situated near tourists spots..(thumbs UP)

Breakfast was served on time..and if you want it earlier, you could just ask the staffs to serve it on your preferred time..it was Good!

We were lucky enough because we say the wholeness of Mt. Mayon. They said, it is not everyday that the active volcano reveals itself..so yeah, I guess we're lucky :))

The rooms are clean and with a/c each..plus the bathroom is also clean..

What we like most about the place is the spacious design..a style of a typical home. Well, we've never felt away from home when we stayed here. I like the fresh air coming in from the balcony of the third floor. We used to stay there at night and feel the cold fresh air..

It's an undeniably unforgettable experience..

Thank you Balay de la Rama..hope to see you again on our next trip in Bicol next year :)))
More powers and God Bless.. !!!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the Bicolano language, "Balay" means house, and we strive to be just that, your home away from home but with the backyard view of Mayon Volcano, to add a bit of spice to it. Balay de la Rama is a six-room family house, with six spacious rooms available for short-term homestay. Like any provincial home, it has big windows to promote natural ventilation, and indeed, the gentle, or sometimes stalwart breezes are enough to lull you to sleep as you take your afternoon siesta by the wooden sofa, or better yet, on the hammock by the balcony. If by any chance it is summer, and the mango tree is in full bloom, you can spend afternoons picking mango, or if that is too much effort, you can wait for them to fall, so you can eat them with hot bagoong (shrimp paste). If you’d rather read than be hit by falling mangoes, then the owner’s personal collections are free for you to browse. Come dinnertime, you can join the family meal to sample that spicy Bicolano cooking, such as "pinangat," or "ginantaang gulay," or you can request for that poor man’s fare, such as tinapa (smoked fish) or "tuyo" (salted fish), if you suddenly crave for them. We won't force you to eat "balut" (fertilized duck egg), but would love to see your priceless expression as you try. If you came to Bicol to see moody, fiery Mayon, all you need to do is cast a sideways glance by the window, and there it is. But we know you may want to swim with the whale sharks in Donsol, wakeboard in CWC or island-hop in Caramoan, then this is a great jump-off point with easy access to all kinds of transport to your destination. The land at which Balay de la Rama stands has been with the dela Rama family for more than a century. While Balay itself isn't ancient, the warm family spirit and hospitality is. Your Bicolana host is herself an avid backpacker, but knows that indeed, there is no place like home. ... more   less
