Chitral Fort
Ranked #4 of 14 things to do in Chitral
Attraction details
Reviewed April 30, 2018

The Chitral fort is situated on the banks of the Chitral River. The fort was built by Raja Nadir Shah in the 14th Century. It was restored in 1774 during the reign of Shah Afzal II and again in 1911 by H.H. Shuja-ul-Mulk . The Fort was used as a residence for Mehtar Family and for military purposes as well.

After the merger of Chitral state in 1969 with Pakistan it was declared personal property of the last ruler of chitral. . It is now occupied by the current ceremonial Mehtar, Fateh-ul-Mulk Ali Nasir who has renovated the old Darbar Hall and state rooms following damage sustained during the earthquake of 2015.

The travelers & Tourists are not allowed to visit this fort but on special request a visit can be arranged.I have been to this fort once.

I loved visiting this place and relating it to history, architecture, site, construction, rulers elite. my especial interest were guns at display which gave me an insight to initial guns and their development to present day armoury.

Still serves the purpose of residence of the Mehtar (Royal head) of Chitral and family. Most of the building is pretty well kept and painted but some old parts are in ruins

The exterior gate is ornate and attractive. Similarly the old fortifications are visible from the outside. We were fortunate to be allowed access to the ground of the riverside fort. It did not take much imagination to picture it in bygone days.
